  1. The Last Performance

    Author description: The Last Performance [dot org] is a constraint-based collaborative writing, archiving and text-visualization project responding to the theme of lastness in relation to architectural forms, acts of building, a final performance, and the interruption (that becomes the promise) of community. The visual architecture of The Last Performance [dot org] is based on research into "double buildings," a phrase used here to describe spaces that have housed multiple historical identities, with a specific concern for the Hagia Sophia and its varied functions of church, mosque, and museum. The project uses architectural forms as a contextual framework for collaborative authorship. Source texts submitted to the project become raw material for a constantly evolving textual landscape.

  2. Frequency

    Frequency is a poetry generator written in Ruby, and part of a larger constrained writing process. The lines of all the poems in Frequency are constrained by the fact that I used only 200 of the most common English words in them. The poems generated by Frequency are built from a pool of 2000 lines I wrote. The process of writing the lines was not aided by the machine and was painstaking work. I wrote a set of ten lines beginning with each word, only using the other words in this list in the rest of the line. It is perhaps not unsurprisingly difficult to make meaningful expressions with such a limited vocabulary, but in the end I was surprised by how flexible these base units of our language can be. The poetry generator itself runs from a command line interface, and can algorithmically assemble poems according to a number of different rhyme scheme, syllabic, and spatial criteria.

  3. The Distributed Legible City

    A later version of The Legible City (1989) encompasses all the experiences offered by the original version, but introduces an important new multi-user functionality that to a large extent becomes its predominant feature. In the Distributed Legible City there are two or more bicyclists at remote locations who are simultaneously present in the virtual environment.They can meet each other (by accident or intentionally), see abstracted avatar representations of each other, and when they come close to each other they can verbally communicate with each other.

    While the Distributed Legible City shows the same urban textual landscape as the original Legible City, this database now takes on a new meaning. The texts are no longer the sole focus of the user's experience, but instead becomes the con_text (both in terms of scenery and content) for the possible meetings and resulting conversations (meta_texts) between the bicyclists. In this way a rich new space of co-mingled spoken and readable texts is generated. In other words the artwork changes from being merely a visual experience, into becoming a visual ambiance for social exchange between visitors to that artwork.

  4. Generative Poems

    This work is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts using Processing to generate visual compositions which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence.These particular poems developed with Szekely were inspired by Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem (alphabetsquarebook). In all the experiments, three communication systems are coming together: image, writing and code.

    It is my aim to stretch the possibilities of programming to produce generative texts activated by sound and rooted in the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representation, production processes and progression with technological advances. As a research project, the work will have a valuable input in provoking discourses and bringing knowledge and understanding into the different explored disciplines.

  5. Enter:in' Wodies

    Enter:in' Wodies is the intermedial installation, where the person interacts with the work via motion sensing input device Kinect. The main idea is to imagine the person, whose interiour you would desire to read. You can choose from two models – man or woman. After the first text that explains the initiation to enter other person, you interact with the work by choosing the body parts by touching with your hands the imaginary being. The body parts refer to seven organ systems. To reveal the poems connected with the particular human biological systems, you have to make movements with your hands to uncover the words (interaction area is defined by your physical distance of hand from the sensor). The revelation of each part brings about the biological image of its cell textures, of the music (which has its unique corresponding sound that goes with the main melody) and of the poetic text about the system's exceptionality. After having read all the pieces, the final text appears that informs about your leaving the other person's body.

  6. Labylogue

    Labylogue est un espace de conversation.

    Dans trois lieux différents reliés par Internet, Bruxelles, Lyon , Dakar , les visiteurs déambulent dans un labyrinthe virtuel en quête de l’autre.

    Deux à deux ils dialoguent en français.

    A mi-chemin entre le livre et la Bibliothèque de Babel de Borgès, les murs se tapissent de phrases générées en temps réel, qui sont autant d’interprétations du dialogue en cours. A son tour le texte fait l’objet d’une interprétation orale qui anime l’espace du labyrinthe tel un choeur de synthèse qui vagabonde sur les rives de la langue en action.

    La médiation numérique introduit dans la communication des couches d’interprétation qui échappent à l’intention brouillant parfois le sens. La parole reprend alors ses droits. Elle glisse sur l’interprétation de la machine en privilégiant le contact là où la trace écrite dérive.rive.

  8. Ink After Print

    Ink After Print is a digital literary installation exhibited in public settings such as libraries. The installation allows readers-users to perform, reenact and rewrite recombinant poems written by Peter-Clement Woetmann "and you" (user-reader). AS -- Ink After Print is an interactive, participatory, digital literary installation made in a collaboration between PIT-researchers, CAVI/Tekne Productions and Roskilde Libraries initiated during the Literature Takes Place (Litteraturen Finder Sted) project and first exhibited in 2012. Ink is designed to make people affectively engage with, and reflect on, the ergodic qualities of digital literature in public settings such as libraries and events. Through their engagement with Ink, people can – individually or collaboratively – produce poems by interacting with three books embedded with a custom-made sensor system, the DUL Radio. The interactive books let people control a floating sentence in an ocean of words toward a sheet of paper to produce a poem, all visualized on a large display. The sentences, written by Danish author Peter-Clement Woetmann, are retrieved from a database.

  9. The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network

    The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network is an evolving, transmedia series that employs print, film, installation and digital practices in the assembling and disassembling of lyric essays, poetry, graphic design, photography and physical artifacts in an experimental documentary of memory, time and story. The initial form of this documentary work was an installation at the photography gallery Agnes in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993, titled "Undressing Audrey," in which the viewer physically "undressed" the book, slipping text from a woman's garments, one button and layer at a time. Through subsequent, increasingly digital interpretations, Pretty relied on a layered structure that attempted to approximate the original installation experience through a series of overlapping narrative threads that could be sorted and resorted by different contexts and media types, such as time, place, character, artifact, image, audio, and video, among others.

  10. Objective Poet

    Objective Poet is a multimedia object that consists of a computer modelled kinetic sculpture in the shape of modified cube accompanied by sound design, reflecting its microclimate. We plan to install the Objective Poet in a public space where people talk a lot: on a central square, in a cafeteria, etc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A sound capturing device is going to be attached to the artefact to collect the verbal interactions of the passersby in the close proximity. Analyzed using Maximus P modules, the sounds of these conversations will be converted into a sound poem. The text will be vocalized or transmitted in a multichannel configuration.
