    1993/94 und 1999

    Vor einer alten Wandtafel - auf der noch Spuren weggewischter Kreide erkennbar sind - ist ein Monitor auf Schienen befestigt. Ein Betrachter kann diesen Monitor horizontal und vertikal verschieben. Dabei fährt der Monitor über Wörter und Sätze, die auf der realen Tafel nicht zu sehen sind. Fährt der Monitor über eine Position, an der vorher ein Wort stand, befindet sich hier jetzt ein anderes Wort. Die Wörter und Sätze sind Zitate und Zitatfragmente, die aus dem Themenkomplex Erinnerung/Text/Abbild stammen. Sie wurden von unterschiedlichen Personen mit Kreide auf die Tafel geschrieben, fotografiert, digitalisiert und dann wieder von der Tafel gewischt. Der Computer ordnet zufällig die Zitate verschiedenen Positionen auf der Tafel zu.

    Very little information about this work is available online. P. Sugarman writes that "Ambulance is about some Gen-Xers who run into a string of spectacularly bad luck involving a car accident and a serial killer disguised as an ambulance driver. One of the most effective elements here is the music sampling. The droning repetition of the musical phrases, over & over while you absorb slices of the story, gives the whole experience an obsessive, claustrophobic feeling."   3. Brown House Kitchen

    During the author's residency as a writer and designer of experimental computer mediated narratives in the Computer Science Lab (CSL) at  Xerox PARC,  the exploratory narrative, Brown House Kitchen was written and programmed  in LambdaMOO,  a MOO that uses an object oriented programming language developed at PARC by Pavel Curtis.  Influenced by conversations with Curtis and by the ubiquitous computing research being undertaken in CSL,  the narrative took place in  a future communal eating space where virtual interrelated devices integral to the functioning of the kitchen recorded events in various ways.  In Rashoman fashion, these devices related the details of things that occurred in a previous November in different but related ways. Players who "entered" Brown House Kitchen unfolded the story in various (unpredictable) ways by examining the things they found in the environment.     Marble Springs, a complex and lyrical new work in the tradition of Spoon River Anthology and Winesburg, Ohio, explores the lives of the women who built the American West. Marble Springs invites the reader to explore a collection of poems discovered in the ruins of a church in an abandoned ghost town. The poems, like the lives of so many 19th century women, are anonymous, enticing the reader to discover the identity of the author hidden between the lines.   5. Collocations: Indra's Net II

    A collection of texts, which combine based on next-word branching (similar to Leaving the City).  By taking a given word on a page, an underlying script will find all other instances of that word in the supplied corpus, and randomly determine which work's text to shift into.

    Collocations is an anthology consisting of:

    "Under It All 2"

    "A Refinement of Language"

    "Indra's PoemPoem"

    "Critical Theory"

     

    Each of these uses similar methods of generating acrostic text to create the final work.

  6. Storms

    An interactive hypertext piece based on the sefirotic tree of the Kabbalah. "Storms" is organized in vocalic and consonantal bifurcations. To navigate through the poem one is invited to click on a letter at any given time. In some instances, navigation can also take place by clicking outside the word. If the reader does not make a choice, that is, if he or she does not click on a vowel or consonant, or in some instances also on empty space, the reader will remain stationary. The poem does not have an ending. This means that one can continue to explore different textual navigation possibilities or quit at anytime.     Appearing in the beginning of the non-commercial era of interactive fiction, it is considered one of the milestones of the genre. The player takes the part of an English aristocrat called Meldrew. In the course of searching the attic for an old tourist map of Paris, Meldrew steps into a surreal adventure to uncover a centuries-old curse that has been placed on the family.     Myst is a graphic adventure puzzle video game designed and directed by the brothers Robyn and Rand Miller. It was developed by Cyan (now Cyan Worlds) and published by Brøderbund. The Millers began working on Myst in 1991 and released it for the Mac OS computer on September 24, 1993; it was developer Cyan's largest project to date. Remakes and ports of the game have been released for Sega Saturn, PlayStation, 3DO, Microsoft Windows, Atari Jaguar CD, CD-i, AmigaOS, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, iOS, and Nintendo 3DS. Myst puts the player in the role of the Stranger, who uses a special book to travel to the island of Myst. There, the player uses other special books written by an artisan and explorer named Atrus to travel to several worlds known as "Ages". Clues found in each of these Ages help to reveal the back-story of the game's characters. The game has several endings, depending on the course of action the player takes. Upon release, Myst was a surprise hit, with critics lauding the ability of the game to immerse players in the fictional world. The game was the best-selling PC game until The Sims exceeded its sales in 2002.

    Kaos était une revue sur ordinateur consacrée à la littérature électronique et produite par la société Kaos, qui la présentait comme carte de voeux. Réalisée par Jean-Pierre Balpe, trois numéros sur disquettes seront ainsi édités entre 1991 et 1993. Ce numéro 3 est sorti en Janvier 1993. La génération automatique de textes est quasi l'oeuvre de Jean-Pierre Balpe dont l'influence a été décisive sur la littérature numérique française des années 1980.
