    1993/94 und 1999

    Vor einer alten Wandtafel - auf der noch Spuren weggewischter Kreide erkennbar sind - ist ein Monitor auf Schienen befestigt. Ein Betrachter kann diesen Monitor horizontal und vertikal verschieben. Dabei fährt der Monitor über Wörter und Sätze, die auf der realen Tafel nicht zu sehen sind. Fährt der Monitor über eine Position, an der vorher ein Wort stand, befindet sich hier jetzt ein anderes Wort. Die Wörter und Sätze sind Zitate und Zitatfragmente, die aus dem Themenkomplex Erinnerung/Text/Abbild stammen. Sie wurden von unterschiedlichen Personen mit Kreide auf die Tafel geschrieben, fotografiert, digitalisiert und dann wieder von der Tafel gewischt. Der Computer ordnet zufällig die Zitate verschiedenen Positionen auf der Tafel zu.

  2. database

    database is an electronic reading device that deals with the inversed functionality of three electronic devices: a printer, a video camera and a database. Consequently, it raises issues about the erasure of text, the act of reading in real time (i.e., listening to a printed text), and physical databases. Through the opposition between presence x absence, recording x erasing, memory x forgetfulness, present x continuous time and reading x listening, we challenge the idea of the database as a non-linear and digital structure, and the printer as an output device as well as an information recorder. Critical for the connection of all these concepts is the idea of present time as a time that is always passing by.

    Variation der Installation „Tafel“ von 1999. Die Handhabung des Interfaces geschieht auch hier über horizontales und vertikales Verschieben des Monitors, die dargestellten Bilder sind aber frei wählbar. Die Abbildungen zeigen die Arbeit während einer Veranstaltung bei Filesharing, Berlin und als permanente Installation in den Geschäftsräumen der Agentur Raumschiff, Hamburg.

  4. IP Poetry

    Project IP Poetry questions the statute of poetry and poets. On the one hand, as far as the construction of robots is concerned, it highlights the subjectivization of technological systems, those we provide of determinate human augmented characteristics artificially –memory, ability to speak and listen to each other-. On the other hand, with regards to the poetic constructions as a result, we take advantage of the virtual configuration of a collective human memory through the Internet Web and a poetics based on machinery and random. Using a proximity sensor the system detects the presence of the audience and sends a command to the robots to make them start to recite poems created for each event.

  5. The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network

    The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network is an evolving, transmedia series that employs print, film, installation and digital practices in the assembling and disassembling of lyric essays, poetry, graphic design, photography and physical artifacts in an experimental documentary of memory, time and story. The initial form of this documentary work was an installation at the photography gallery Agnes in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993, titled "Undressing Audrey," in which the viewer physically "undressed" the book, slipping text from a woman's garments, one button and layer at a time. Through subsequent, increasingly digital interpretations, Pretty relied on a layered structure that attempted to approximate the original installation experience through a series of overlapping narrative threads that could be sorted and resorted by different contexts and media types, such as time, place, character, artifact, image, audio, and video, among others.

  6. RIMA

    RIMA (twitter stream http://twitter.com/squidsilo) is a performance installation and digital media work that conceptually addresses strategies for survival by way of poetically re-framing the facts behind the effects of solitary confinement and isolation into a fictional present/future. Notions around stimulus and memory are played out through the performers movement within the physical space (proximity, sound, touch) and the data collection of distinct environmental changes (cold, hot, light, dark), which trigger strategically placed sensors collated by a computer program. This in turn dispatches a relational virtual text stream delivered to a live webpage and/or twitter feed (twitter fiction). The overall effect is a mimic of real-time thoughts, responses and actions, which over time slowly build into a fictional narrative somewhere between an indistinct present and a sci-fi future.
