    In “#4artforfreedom” I sustain a mode of writing I began in 2007: exploring possibilities in creating anagrammatic digital poetry in multimedia contexts—now with the added feature of enabling multiple sonic possibilities. Works like this represent my own way of seeing language and imagery (in poetic texts) as a sustainable, or at least self-sustaining, self-supported form. For “Art for Freedom” I was thinking about gender equity, and the need—from Confucius, who I revise, onward—to demand parity. My presentation reflects and oscillates between the physical strength of everyone, visualizing a sensibility that bestows power to all. I render a plain yet artful visual aesthetic in order to support an unconventional and inventive constraint-based verse.

  2. Give Me Your Light

    One day in 2008 in Malaysia, by chance, I videotaped two starkly ordinary events: a dying kitten and a chained monkey. Give me Your Light explores the archetypal capacity of these creatures. The archetypes are death and enslavement. The dying abandoned kitten in a parking lot stands-in for the fatally ill, homeless runaways and abandoned children. The chained monkey suggests slaves, prisoners, abductees, captives, convicts, detainees and internees. Give me Your Light is about the limits of empathy and ubiquitous complicity. The display of Give me Your Light is not a linear video, it is a set of video-clips, sounds, music and words reassembled every two minutes into a new sequence by an algorithm. Events repeat but never in the same order. Clips appear in both monochrome and colour, with music and without, with sound and silent. Contextual structure and affective content collide.   3. The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network

    The Reverberatory Narrative: Toward Story as a Multisensory Network is an evolving, transmedia series that employs print, film, installation and digital practices in the assembling and disassembling of lyric essays, poetry, graphic design, photography and physical artifacts in an experimental documentary of memory, time and story. The initial form of this documentary work was an installation at the photography gallery Agnes in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993, titled "Undressing Audrey," in which the viewer physically "undressed" the book, slipping text from a woman's garments, one button and layer at a time. Through subsequent, increasingly digital interpretations, Pretty relied on a layered structure that attempted to approximate the original installation experience through a series of overlapping narrative threads that could be sorted and resorted by different contexts and media types, such as time, place, character, artifact, image, audio, and video, among others.

  4. Motions

    Motions by Hazel Smith (text), Will Luers (image and coding), and Roger Dean (sound) is conceived as a multimedia web book, and optimized for swiping and scrolling on tablets and computers. It is also a performance piece. It is programmed in HTML 5/Javascript. Motions takes human trafficking and contemporary slavery as its focus. Human trafficking is an accelerating form of crime and is a world-wide problem. It is one of the darker outcomes of globalization, the breakdown of the nation-state, and increasing ease of travel. Static and moving, variable and sequential, the piece presents image and text fragments from different genres: documentary, journalism, poetry and narrative. These fragments are programmed to evoke the subjective experience of enslavement in motion. The sound is constructed as an interactive mosaic. It includes musical transformations of train and plane journeys. It also features two compositions that use instrumental, timbral, rhythmic and harmonic devices characteristic of very different parts of the world. These materials are compositionally transformed with electroacoustic music techniques, including a range of algorithmic compositional devices.

  5. Scriptpoemas

    Scriptpoemas (2005-) is a collection of poems or “poemas” which is still being written by Antero de Alda. He was described by Rui Torres as an explorer of “new paths for computer-animated poetry” (Torres, 2008). These short and (apparently) ready-to-consume poems were created using Flash, Javascript and ActionScript and they often enact the activity or attribute described in their title. Each poem seems to convey the literal meaning of the words used to describe them: the “poem in prison” is presented behind bars, the “spherical poem” can be described as a round object. However, as soon as the poems are activated by the reader, new details begin to surface. Antero de Alda makes use of the digital environment to uncover the many faces of a poem and the evasiveness of language. The arbitrariness of signs is, after all, widely explored by Alda in each poem. Nothing is what it seems and icons, concepts or famous photographs are defamiliarized and turned into traps designed to betray the reader’s senses.

  6. Round

    Round is a computational poem that is both non-interactive and deterministic. It is computational in that computation is an essential aspect of the work, non-interactive because there is no input accepted as the program runs, and deterministic because the text produced should be the same each time on any properly-functioning computer. The poem is also infinite (in the sense of boundless); there is no final line or internally specified condition that will cause the program will stop. Round is not never-ending, since whatever computational resources one has will eventually be exhausted, but there is no pre-set length to the poem. The poem is assembled out of ten fragments, one of which is a newline (line break). The other nine are strings of legible text. Round computes the digits of π, pausing after each digit is computed. (Each time Round is loaded, it begins at 3, continues to 1, continues to 4, and so on.) For each digit computed, the fragment corresponding to that digit is added to the poem.   7. Symmetries

    Symmetries is a digital text comprised of approximately three hundred eighty sextillion poems, or about one poem for every star in the universe. Given enough time, the piece will shift through all possible poems, but it does not do so entirely at random. Rather, Symmetries wanders through these poems according to three mathematical symmetries known as SU(3), SU(2), and U(1) that describe almost everything we know about how the universe works. That is to say everything we see in the world is what it is and behaves the way it does because of these three symmetries. Just as distant stars and nebulae and all living things are linked by these shared symmetries, so too are all of the words and poems (and even the background music) of this piece.

  8. Rea and the Squaw

    Rea and the Squaw is a kinetic poetry piece I created three months after my Grandma Rea died at the age of 96 on December 18, 2012. When she died, I was left with: memories, some pictures, and pages and pages of her unpublished and published poetry. So I began to dissect her poetry, dissect each word. And then I couldn’t stop. I wanted to mold her words, shift them, strain them. I wanted to understand where these words could be cornered, shaped, and colored. I cherished them, chained them, tamed, and mazed them. I sized and seized them. Who was this woman? How has she influenced who I am as a person? As a poet? The words on the digital interface are hers, and the particular shaping, movement, and coloring of the words is proof that I’ve traversed them.

  9. Anacrón: Hipótesis de un Producto Todo

    Anacrón, Hipótesis de un producto todo is the vertiginous text that calls to the dead and the imagination. Both the subjects are attached to Mexican culture since ancient times and more than ever in our actual global society. Anacrón is an eclectic aesthetic e-poem that aims to respect the linear textual reading of the poem while it explores the boundaries of collaboration, multimedia and video game. Gabriel, the poet, and Augusto, the bandit. The entire project has developed without meeting each other. All communication has been done by e-mail. The journey starts when Augusto found an abandoned book called Caja over a couch in a Cafe at Puebla city. Of course, he stole both: the coffee and the book.

    Sonnet One Four is a cryptographic experience. While the puzzle is relatively simple, each tweet is representative of a line of the poem, in scrambled, random order, each tweet is meant to take you on your own unique journey to matching the clue to the line of the poem. Each line is unique and thus you as an individual will ultimately take your own path to not only interpreting the poem, decoding/encoding the poem, but you will also take different implications away from the clues. The clues sometimes are metaphorical, otherwise they are literally pointed at a word or phrase within the line of the poem the clue correlates to. In summation, when you start trying to match tweets to meanings and the lines of the poem as we have assigned each tweet to, you may in fact Google different things, or think of different references and meanings true to your experiences (intertextuality). I expect people will use the internet as a main resource to decode/match each tweet to each line but that is because I made the twitter that way. However, you could use other resources or prior knowledge.
