  2. Populist Modernism: Printed Instagram Poetry and the Literary Highbrow

    “InstaPoets” are a collection of individual Instagrammers who’ve converted their social media capital (hundreds of thousands of followers, millions of “likes” and reposts) into printed book bestseller status. Rupi Kaur alone tallied 1.4 million sales of her first book of Insta Poetry, ​Milk and Honey​, in 2017. Uniquely among books by social media celebrities (​c.f.​books by YouTube celebrities), fans of InstaPoets buy printed book versions of ​exactly the same content​ that’s available for free in an Instagram feed. Why do these fans buy what they already have for free?

    This paper describes the Instagram Poetry phenomenon, then situates it in two contexts: debates about high- and lowbrow digital literary culture; and book industry efforts to understand--and monetize--digital interactivity.

  3. Not Sold in Stores: The Commercialization Potential of Digital Fiction

    Since Will Crowther created the first text-adventure game in 1976 (Jerz 2007), digital media has provided ample opportunity for fictional storytelling to evolve. One evolutionary pathway has led to computer games, now the most dominant form of entertainment media. Digital fiction, however, has developed along a more understated pathway, and has yet to emerge into its mainstream or commercial niche; it is not sold on Amazon, Google Play, or Steam; it is not regularly reviewed in ​The New Yorker ​or ​The Guardian​; it does not get adapted into popular films or television shows. Yet digital fiction persists, and in recent years has expanded beyond its roots as experimental texts created and shared amongst academics and avant garde artists, as demonstrated by trends in book apps, Twine games, and educational tools.

  4. Words We Never Wrote

    Presented for the first time at the Hay Festival, Words We Never Wrote explores the meaning of writing, language and storytelling.

    Somewhere close to you lie fragments of that story. Scattered words offer glimpses of a narrative etched into the air itself. For the last eighty years, a book that was never read has been trying to find a way back into the world. This is where stories begin, where a story is trying to be told. It wants you to help write it.

    Words We Never Wrote is an Ambient Literature work commissioned by the Hay Festival 2018. It addresses the meaning of language and the role of fiction in an increasingly fragmented world. It wears its heart on its sleeve, and owes a debt to Borges, Calvino, Ocampo and especially the writings of Bruno Schulz.

  5. CHOEUR

    CHOEUR is basically an installation whose heart is made of poetry.

    In the "window" stand a number of characters. It is the inhabitants of a particular castle, men and women, who challenge the visitor. " Come here. Psst, psst ... Do you want to hear a poem? "

    They are poets from Quebec and Belgium. Delayed poetic presences and reduced to the proportions of the castelet.

    When, to answer the call, the visitors approach the window, the poets recite at the same time a flow of worms which are not confused. Then, gradually, they give each other the floor. The verses are linked together, quickly at the beginning, then more slowly until only one poet is heard. He says his poem - the others let it say - then gradually fades, leaving room for a sound and visual, a landscape echoing poetry. Then the ground comes alive, the text is visual. When the last word of the poet falls, the others come back and challenge the visitor again.

  6. Damocles 2

    Ce jeu vidéo d’art explore les concepts pavloviens liés à la quête de sens ou de but intrinsèquement liée au médium du jeu, plus précisément du jeu vidéo traditionnel. 
    La guilde de Damoclès explore les relations du joueur avec une variété d'objets virtuels. Le but, s’il en est un, n'est pas individuel. Les participants sont invités à amasser le plus d'épées possible. Dans ce monde à l'apparence hostile où cohabitent des stéréotypes du monde du jeu vidéo, nul ne peut se faire de mal. Bien que les dragons, les extraterrestres et les autres figures se déplacent vers le joueur et le menace aucun système de vie, de mort ou d’élimination n'existe. Le joueur se voit refuser toute forme de finalité. Le jeu n’est pas régi par un système de temps, de ce fait son début et sa fin dépendent entièrement de la durée de l’exposition.

    ReRites exhibit format also includes over 120 hours of neural-net text-generation videos, 15 hours of editing videos, and often includes a participatory performance component called ReadingRites.

  8. Articulation: Poems from Phonetic Similarity Vector Space

    This is a reading performance of the book named Articulations. The poems in Articulations are the output of a computer program that extracts linguistic features from over two million lines of public domain poetry, then traces fluid paths between the lines based on their similarities. By turns propulsive and meditative, the poems demonstrate an intuitive coherence found outside the bounds of intentional semantic constraints.

  9. Las piedras del camino

    The installation "Las piedras del camino" is a representation of the landscape walked by Don Quijote in the first part of his journey. We converted literary fragments to rocks by calculating the magnitude of some confusions and mistakes that are narrated in the first part of the novel Don Quijote de la Mancha, written by Miguel de Cervantes. We can now use this rocks to make scultural representations of Don Quijote's landscape through the objectification of his mistakes.

  10. Máquina Do Desassossego [ Machines of Disquiet]

    Machines of Disquiet are a series of experimental web applications that aim to provide various aesthetic and reading experiences based on Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa. Each of the applications is an attempt to find a new setting for experiencing the Book of Disquiet as a sensitive matter. The title refers to the condition of machinic mediation that defines digital objects, but these experimental applications are also understood as “feeling machines,” “machines for making sense,” and “imagination machines.” The Machines of Disquiet have been developed as a first iteration of author-function of the LdoD Archive: Collaborative Digital Archive of the Book of Disquiet.
