    Explore a dark, mountainous landscape dominated by a gigantic tower. 

    Set in a dark and abstract dream world that revolves around a crashed bus, the atmospheric literary game environment The Dead Tower can be freely explored at full-screen with the mouse and keyboard. Leonardo Flores says about the project: “This narrative poem is arranged on a darkly atmospheric virtual world designed to both creep you out and pull you in…“. Like the proverbial moth, the reader’s attention is drawn towards the brightest things around: white words float in the air, static or rotating. And the lines of mezangelle verse both heighten the dread by telling fragments of a ghostly narrative prefigured by the bus crash site the reader finds herself in and soften the tone with hints about the interface that nudge the fourth wall.     In “#4artforfreedom” I sustain a mode of writing I began in 2007: exploring possibilities in creating anagrammatic digital poetry in multimedia contexts—now with the added feature of enabling multiple sonic possibilities. Works like this represent my own way of seeing language and imagery (in poetic texts) as a sustainable, or at least self-sustaining, self-supported form. For “Art for Freedom” I was thinking about gender equity, and the need—from Confucius, who I revise, onward—to demand parity. My presentation reflects and oscillates between the physical strength of everyone, visualizing a sensibility that bestows power to all. I render a plain yet artful visual aesthetic in order to support an unconventional and inventive constraint-based verse.

  4. Anacrón: Hipótesis de un Producto Todo

    Anacrón, Hipótesis de un producto todo is the vertiginous text that calls to the dead and the imagination. Both the subjects are attached to Mexican culture since ancient times and more than ever in our actual global society. Anacrón is an eclectic aesthetic e-poem that aims to respect the linear textual reading of the poem while it explores the boundaries of collaboration, multimedia and video game. Gabriel, the poet, and Augusto, the bandit. The entire project has developed without meeting each other. All communication has been done by e-mail. The journey starts when Augusto found an abandoned book called Caja over a couch in a Cafe at Puebla city. Of course, he stole both: the coffee and the book.

  5. Heimlich Unheimlich

    Heimlich Unheimlich is a screened, collaborative work consisting of visual collages, performed and displayed mixed genre texts (poetry, narrative, memoir, documentary), manipulations of image using the computer language MAX/MSP/Jitter, composed and improvised music, and vocal and instrumental sound samples. 

    Heim in German means home, so Heimlich Unheimlich could translate loosely as Homely Unhomely. However, heimlich more usually means secretive or hidden while unheimlich means uncanny or weird, so the connotations of the two words can overlap. This relationship between heimlich and unheimlich (discussed in Sigmund Freud’s essay ‘The Uncanny’) underlies the content of the piece.

  6. soundAFFECTs

     soundAFFECTs, employs the text of 'AFFECTions' by Hazel Smith and Anne Brewster, a fictocritical piece about emotion and affect as its base, but converts it into a piece which combines text as moving image and transforming sound. For the multimedia work Roger Dean programmed a performing interface using the real-time image processing program Jitter; he also programmed a performing interface in MAX/MSP to enable algorithmic generation of the sound. This multimedia work has been shown in performance on many occasions projected on a large screen with live music; the text and sound are processed in real time and each performance is different.   7. The Character Thinks Ahead

    The Character Thinks Ahead (version 2) by Hazel Smith and Roger Dean is focused on the computerized generation of creative writing using deep learning neural nets. It knits together visual, sonic, linguistic and literary elements that all interact with each other. Of the three dynamically rolling columns of text in the upper part of the screen, the middle presents three pre-composed poetic texts that suggest ideas, feelings and contexts to do with war, hierarchy and competition respectively. The two columns on either side display text generation using deep learning nets: in the left column the text is generated by character, in the other it is generated by word. In the bottom part of the screen there are also three distinct elements to the display. An animated word cloud in the middle highlights features of the ongoing texts. To the left of it is a dynamic spectral visualisation of a (pre-recorded) rendering of the live speech: this is live-transformed to provide a sonic output visualized spectrally on the right.

  8. The Lips Are Different

    The Lips are Different  is about the Canadian citizen Suaad Hagi Mohamud — born in Somalia — who was accused of not being a Canadian citizen when she tried to return to Canada from Kenya in 2009. The work links over-surveillance, racial discrimination, photography, media representation and issues of identity. It comprises real-time video written in Jitter; improvised music based on a comprovisation score and both performed text and screened text.

  9. Time the Magician

    Time, the magician (2005) is a collaboration by Hazel Smith and Roger Dean written in the real-time algorithmic image-processing program Jitter. The piece begins with a poem, written by Hazel, on the subject of time:  influential on the writing of the poem was Elizabeth Grosz’s The Nick of Time.  The poem is initially performed solo, but as it progresses is juxtaposed with live and improvised sound which includes real-time and pre-recorded sampling and processing of the voice. The performance of the poem is followed (slightly overlapping) by screened text in which the poem is dissected and reassembled. This screened text is combined in Jitter with video of natural vegetation, and the sound and voice samples continue during the visual display.

    A soundplay of original written text and music, which was also published as a stand alone written text.

    A story about two human beings who decide to go through with an operation that could give them eternal youth. The operation goes wrong and all of their experiences, memories, sense of time and place, and knowledge is lost. What they regain is not quite the same.
