    A mash-up of Dadaist technique and VJ stylings, this Flash movie is the product of an "antagonist remix" by babel vs. escha. Seven scenes provide enigmatic observations on the nature of contemporary life, on seeing and being seen, understanding and miscommunication, destruction and creation. The texts in the piece are generated randomly as the piece runs, so the reader's experience of the piece is never exactly the same twice.

  2. Ideas of Beauty: Conversations

    Ideas of Beauty: Conversations is an internet-based participatory book composed of sound and text, which embodies a selection of women's processes, thoughts, and advice about beauty. It is based upon an exploration of how women, in general, think of themselves in relation to the ideologies of beauty and its societal pressures. Since it is only the outcome of the repetitive and laborious procedures affiliated with beauty that are seen, I am bringing the time consuming and sometimes painful processes associated with the rituals of beautification to the forefront. This artwork is meant to invite the viewer to interact with it by listening and sharing a moment in order to obtain a better understanding of how the processes of a beautification ritual become an integrated aspect of a woman's internal self.

  3. Je ziet hier iedereen voorbijkomen, de Westerparkse gedichten

    You See Everyone Go By is the result of a four year project in which Hans Kloos made a portrait of the Amsterdam district Westerpark by writing poems about particular places and people in the district. It was originally published as a CD-ROM that opened a full screen window with a map of Westerpark with the choice between gedichten (poems) and stemmen (voices). Clicking on one of these would open a new map of the district with dots appearing all over the map. The dots in their turn would lead to either the text or an animation of a poem or to a recording of the poem, read not by the author, but by someone with a direct connection to the poem. Je ziet hier iedereen voorbijkomen is not about the author, but about a place and its people.

    The work is in entirely in Dutch. Although on some occasions a poem has been translated into English, these translations are not included here.

    A dictation exercise. Girls in an educational black & white setting. Sentences (well-pronounced but sloppily) read by a male voice at dictation speed. The reaction of the girl in focus colors the content.

  5. Inanimate Alice, Episode 1: China

    Inanimate Alice depicts the life of a young girl growing up in the early years of the 21st century through her blog and episodic multimedia adventures that span her life from childhood through to her twenties. It has been created to help draw attention to the issue of electro-sensitivity and the potentially harmful pollution resulting from wireless communications.

  7. Amor-mundo, ou a vida, esse sonho triste

    Amor-mundo, ou a vida, esse sonho triste [World-love, or life, that sad dream] is an animated text which proposes generative schemes of both visual and audio animation. Building on metaphors and images from the works of the Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca, and using as its starting point the Actionscript code of Jared Tarbel, this work includes five poems: Part 1 - Deixa-me ser a tua mais triste mágoa; Part 2 - Eu queria ser o mar alto; Part 3 - Passo no mundo a ler o misterioso livro;  Part 4 - Sou o vento que geme e quer entrar; Part 5 - Horas mortas. The reader can add to these poems random spatial layers that allow the creation of multiple constellations of meaning.

  9. Like Stars in a Clear Night Sky

    Like Stars in a Clear Night Sky takes advantage of an elegant interface to present the type of lore often passed from parents to children. A voice, speaking Arabic, is paired with text in English, asking readers if they would like to hear a series of stories. Clicking blue stars in the night sky gives access to sparse stories. The reader is able to access these stories by clicking on certain stars in the night sky that appear to be brighter than the rest. These stories, which read more like poems, have to do with personal experiences with Ezzat's life and most have an open ending suggesting that it is up to the subject of the poem to decide how it will end. The use of the night sky works to make a connection with the audience in that just as we share the stars we look up at every night, Ezzat wishes to share his stories and experiences.

  10. Gabriella infinita

    Gabriella Infinita es una obra metamórfica. Su presencia corre paralela a una intensa y a la vez voluble experiencia de escritura. Nace como toda obra artística: por gracia de una necesidad expresiva muy intima. Pero, apenas brota, empieza a buscar alocadamente su forma, como ávida de cuerpo, como presintiendo su fragilidad y su contingencia. Y termina comprendiendo que estaba destinada a la volatilidad.

    Pero esa conciencia siempre estuvo lejos de ser alcanzada fácilmente. Sufrió al comienzo, en su primera fase de formalización, la negligencia majadera de sus lectores; después, la terquedad imposible de su autor que le impidió mutar con libertad. Finalmente, hubo de someterse a la desintegración de sus elementos. Ahora, en su tercera metamorfosis, espera nerviosa, como una quinceañera asustada en su primera cita a ciegas, el encuentro con su lector.
