1. Passage Sets

   Passage Sets is a generative visual poem. It includes an interactive poem generator. The users of the system can position themselves in front of the screen and select words and/or phrases from four lists that become visual as they enter into differing proximities in relation to the screens. Moving forward and/or backward, then stopping in the center of the field, enables the participants to make selections from specific lists authored by Seaman. These words then flow across the screen and become part of an ever-changing line of text at the bottom of the screen.

2. Voice Inside My Head

   "Voice Inside My Head" is a poetic investigation into the internal monologue that occurs after an emotional crisis. There is a tendency to argue with oneself, re-explain events, playing out alternate scenarios. This flashing text-image appears to the eye as a jumble, but the mind naturally arranges and patterns the words until a voice emerges as if from an internal monologue. The mind makes use of memory after-image to form meaning, similar to how meaning is formed from a jumbled recollection of events. Whirlpools of thoughts spin in a loop for a time before eventually letting go and moving on.

   Physical Description: LCD flatscreen behind a standard photographic matte embedded in a picture frame.   The flatscreen is activated by laptop computer components that are also embedded in the frame.

   “Three Rails Live” (2011) by Roderick Coover, Nick Montfort, and Scott Rettberg is an experiment in combinatory poetics, a generative system that results in the production of short narrative videos, stories with a moral to them.

4. Office Diva

   “The Office Diva” is an audio-visual installation; a large scale projection of a computer-controlled character living in a claustrophobic virtual space and compulsively talking. Conceptually, the project is a reproduction and examination of a consciousness ruled by manic-depression. But she is also a machine, and the work plays with the ways in which mad and machinic behavior can manifest in similar ways. Phoebe Sengers argues that the modular design of some intelligent agents makes them hard to understand, they appear to be a schizoid assemblage of random, unmotivated behaviors. Contariwise the computational limitations of other agents have been masked by their insane personalities. Repetitions, lack of affect, inappropriate responses, and non-sequiturs are signs of disturbed people as well as machines. In this project, we deliberately chose a bland machine voice, that speaks the stream-of-consciousness text which is generated, re-ordered and reassembled by a machinic algorithm.

7. Triple Echo: Orpheus and Euridyce

   Tryptich interactive video installation, layering sound and video. As installation, a user would trigger the different speakers by walking in front of one of three screens. Dealing with the myth of Orpheus and Euridyce.

8. Influencing Machine of Miss Natalija A.

   A video installation.

   Zoe Beloff’s "Influencing Machine of Miss Natalija A." is a Flash adaptation of a multimedia installation of the same name created by Beloff in 2001. This web-enabled version combines video, text, audio, and animation to tell the story of Natalija A., a psychiatric patient who was unable to communicate except through writing. Natalija believed that she was being controlled remotely by an “influencing machine,” a mechanical model of her body created by a doctor in Berlin which could be manipulated to control her telepathically. Based on an actual 1919 account of Viennese psychoanalyst Victor Trausk, Beloff’s work contains passages from Trausk’s notebooks, simulated effects of the “diabolical machine,” surrealist footage of medical procedures, and video clips of the actual broadcast technologies that emerged during the early twentieth century to influence populations worldwide.

Die Handhabung des Interfaces geschieht auch hier über horizontales und vertikales Verschieben des Monitors, die dargestellten Bilder sind aber frei wählbar. Die Abbildungen zeigen die Arbeit während einer Veranstaltung bei Filesharing, Berlin und als permanente Installation in den Geschäftsräumen der Agentur Raumschiff, Hamburg.

10. Bodybuilding

    Bodybuilding is an interactive installation which ironically stages the relation between the body, technology, and language. The user is active in a bodybuilding machine. Moving the weights, he or she affects the text movement on the screen in front of him or her. The text consists of erotic fragments stored in a database and selected randomly according to the user’s action. Here, the body, being a consuming and styling object of the Techno-culture, serves—paradoxically in full action—for the imaginative access to the verbally mediated erotic world, where the body simultaneously is a central theme. However, during the reading process, the user’s hands have to remain above the blankets—i.e., on the machine. Beyond, the textual dialog simultaneously functions as a commentary on the user’s situation in the machine.
