  1. What Is at Work in a Work of Digital Literature?

    This proposal is for a panel presentation. In keeping with the themes of Archive and Innovate, this panel will look at structures and decoding with respect to the practice of preserving electronic fiction and poetry. A finished electronic piece is the end result of various decisions about technology and the coding that accompanies this production. In some cases the reading of a piece partially decodes the assemblage; in other works, the coding structure remains hidden. The members of this panel will look at both phenomena as an aspect of investigating works of digital literature. Members will include Marjorie C. Luesebrink/M.D. Coverley (chair), Stephanie Strickland, John Zuern, and Mark Marino.

  2. De quelques fantasmes de la littérature combinatoire

    La publication des textes en ligne a changé nos habitudes de lecture et d'écriture, il est devenu banal de le constater. Cependant toutes les conséquences de ce bouleversement n'ont pas encore été tirées. Jusqu'à présent l'attention des chercheurs s'est surtout portée sur les nouvelles conditions de production, de diffusion et de réception du texte. De ce point de vue, l'informatique a surtout été considérée comme nouveau support, venant après le livre et remplaçant le papier, ouvrant une nouvelle ère après celle de l'imprimerie, offrant un nouveau vecteur de communication à l'œuvre écrite et instaurant de nouvelles relations entre les auteurs et les lecteurs.

  3. Roundtable on remediation of French literature

    Syntonie is a project of digital review for ipad that would prefigure an anthology of French digital poetry. Only 3 works originally designed for a computer will be carried on ipad. The choose of the works, the new computing and the semiotics design will be done at the laboratory Paragraphe in relationship with the publisher. We will examine here the questions that this remediatisation asked: what is lost? What is preserved? What is changed? What balance between mediation for present audience and fidelity to the work? Are they facets of the work we can only document (semiotic representations inside the original program for instance)? Is remediatisation an act of preservation?

    All these questions will be asked in technical, semiotics, literary and publishing points of view. The project will only begin in February and we will document all the process.

  6. Traduire et préserver des œuvres numériques : Les projets du Laboratoire NT2 : La revue bleuOrange et L’Abécédaire du Web

    Dans le cadre du thème “Chercher le texte nunérique” les Laboratoires NT2 proposent une table ronde afin d’aborder la question de la préservation et de la traduction de la littérature hypermédiatique. Par littérature hypermédiatique, les Laboratoires NT2 entendent des œuvres ayant un contenu littéraire et faisant usage des technologies numériques. Ce sont des œuvres qui combinent matériau textuel et multimédia (sons, images, vidéos, etc.), des hypertextes, des textes générés par ordinateur, des fictions interactives, etc. Lors de cette table ronde, nous présenterons l’importance ainsi que la difficulté de traduire les œuvres de ce corpus. L’importance découle du mandat des Laboratoires NT2 de faire connaître en français cette littérature. La difficulté résulte dans la traduction d’œuvres qui doivent se faire en équipe, avec des créateurs qui n’ont plus toujours accès au code informatique de leur travail ou qui doivent le reprogrammer, c'est-à-dire, retraduire leur propre œuvre pour l’adaptation de leur œuvre vers le français.

Involving students and faculty from Bergen, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Temple University, and West Virginia University, the course was an experiment in developing a new model for teaching electronic literature and new media arts production as a collaborative process.

  9. A New Literary Information System: GPS, The Global Poetic System: Bringing Electronic Literature To The Greater Public

    The Global Poetic System (GPS) is an information system that explores four types of interfaces (mobile phones, PDA, desktop applications, and Web application) and three manners of reading (literary adaptive texts, literary classic texts, texts constructed by community interaction) through an interface that delivers literary content based upon real-time geographic positioning. This project is being executed by the Open University of Catalonia (UOC, Spain) and the Advanced Research Center in Artificial Intelligence (CAVIIAR, USA) thanks to a 200,000€ grant awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Technology for one year of execution during 2008. The GPS is an ambitious project that tries to incorporate the literature into the space of digital technologies, bringing the literature over to the greater public. It presents one of the most complex multi-channel, multimodal information systems to date. This talk will offer a preview and a sample of the text.

  10. A framework for developing multi-modal media-spaces using AI techniques

    The act of integrating physical, virtual and textual conceptual spaces to create a unified new media artifact can be challenging. In our work we embrace a constant state of reconceptualization, as we transition between physical aspects of a performance and AI based manipulations that are both visual (art abstraction) and semantic. In these experiments the AI system works with meaning in terms of semantic keywords about the emotions and descriptions of a work. To fully explore the capabilities of these new immersive, virtual and semantic technologies, we can no longer rely on traditional creation, editing and production techniques, but must develop new practices and styles. We propose a new framework for creating what we refer to as ‘multimodal media-spaces.’ These media-spaces include interactive and video-based work that seek to combine physical, virtual and textual entities. This paper details our framework and its uses in several juried multimedia pieces. In our work we use 360 VR and multi-camera filming, movement performance from amateur and professionals, distortions of space and time using AI cinematic projections.
