    "Tributaries & Text-Fed Streams: A Feed-Reading of The Capliano Review is a work of electronic literature by J. R. Carpenter, curated by Kate Armstrong, commissioned by The Capliano Review. In February 2007 The Capilano Review published an issue dedicated to new writing and new technologies guest-edited by Andrew Klobucar. Tributaries & Text-Fed Streams: A Feed-Reading of The Capliano Review is a personal, experimental and playful rereading of and response to these essays by J. R. Carpenter. In this work, Carpenter explores the formal and functional properties of RSS, using blogging, tagging and other Web 2.0 tools to mark-up and interlink essays and to insert additional meta-layers of commentary in order to play with, expose, expand upon, and subvert formal structures of writing, literature, and literary criticism. Over a four-month period Carpenter read and re-read the essays, parsing them into fragments, which she then annotated, marked-up, tagged and posted.

  2. Trac|tExt|ract

    Author Statement: For a number of years I have been experimenting with a form of digital textual display which is posited on the idea that writing, rather than being a generative process of accruing new and original texts, might be largely a practice of revealing the already-written in a variety of new ways.

    These experimental works are based on layers of pre-existing text which are uncovered by various performative methods. Up until now the principal method has been to use the mouse or trackpad to control a cursor which, by moving across the computer screen, gives the impression of ‘erasing’ or  ‘scratching away’ layers of text. This places writing within the context of what might be described as ‘performative archaeology’ (not to be confused with an archaeology of performance as proposed by Mike Pearson, Michael Shanks, et al.).

  3. string-code

    This poem, together with 'Square 01', is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts to generate visual compositions, which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence. If the sound is loud the letters become thicker and bigger. As in many of my pieces, the poems don’t exist until the viewer interacts with them. String_code is the visual representation of the code in Square 01, this is why I am presenting both as a pair. In all poems, the three communication systems converge: image, writing and code. Square 01 is formed by the western alphabet. All the letters appear lineally, in rows, superimposed over each other, until they eventually become an indistinguishable blob. It was my intention to explore the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representations and production processes using the programming language of Processing. Taking model in Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem, its minimalist visual form of multiple layers, the desire to escape from the linguistic through the obliteration of the letters and the encapsulation in it by the square.

  4. Generative Poems

    This work is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts using Processing to generate visual compositions which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence.These particular poems developed with Szekely were inspired by Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem (alphabetsquarebook). In all the experiments, three communication systems are coming together: image, writing and code.

    It is my aim to stretch the possibilities of programming to produce generative texts activated by sound and rooted in the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representation, production processes and progression with technological advances. As a research project, the work will have a valuable input in provoking discourses and bringing knowledge and understanding into the different explored disciplines.

  5. Almost Goodbye

    (Author's description:) Almost Goodbye is an experiment in minimalist procedural content generation for interactive narratives. It does not try to generate a whole story or plot points from scratch, but instead asks what is the minimum amount of procedural generation that can be added to a hand-authored story to produce something both computationally interesting but still narratively sound. The resulting narrative, about a scientist leaving Earth forever and saying her final goodbyes, generates “satellite” sentences that color the narrator’s description and perception of her conversations based on the choices made by the player in prior conversations and other player-influenced contextual cues.

    Set in a dark and abstract dream world that revolves around a crashed bus, the atmospheric literary game environment The Dead Tower can be freely explored at full-screen with the mouse and keyboard. Leonardo Flores says about the project: “This narrative poem is arranged on a darkly atmospheric virtual world designed to both creep you out and pull you in…“. Like the proverbial moth, the reader’s attention is drawn towards the brightest things around: white words float in the air, static or rotating. And the lines of mezangelle verse both heighten the dread by telling fragments of a ghostly narrative prefigured by the bus crash site the reader finds herself in and soften the tone with hints about the interface that nudge the fourth wall.     ‘The Lovers’ Bed’ is based on Marguerite Duras’ novel ‘The North China Lover’. The artist collected quotations from the book and created a new collage based on the re-edited text.

    @everyword is a Twitter bot that tweeted every word in the English language, in alphabetical order, one at a time, every half hour. <@everyword started its task in late 2007 and completed it in 2014. Along the way, it picked up over 100,000 followers and inspired dozens of parodies and imitations. The project, initially inspired by John F. Simon's Every Icon, was an exercise in the potential synergies of social media and experimental writing techniques extending over time: What happens when single words, invested with their own lexical context, are juxtaposed with ever-changing, personalized Twitter feeds? How does social media as a channel shape and afford the presentation of writing?

  9. Lectures assistées par ordinateur

    Le duo Akenaton a été créé en 1984, en Corse (Ajaccio) par Philippe Castellin, poète proche des courants des poésies expérimentales et Jean Torregrosa, plasticien. La performance proposée s’appuiera sur la lecture d’une centaine de textes au choix tirés au sort par une machine, qui les déclamera par voix synthétique. Ces choix seront opérés sur le clavier et lanceront parfois des vidéos préenregistrées, toujours tirées au sort par la machine. Opérant en duo, chacun des artistes peut tour à tour monter sur scène, lire en live et accompagner par la lecture de la machine manipulée par le second artiste.
