  1. Canyonlands: Edward Abbey in the Great American Desert

    "Canyonlands" is a web-based, interactive project that blends text and video imagery on a vast, scrolling environment. Following in the footsteps of the novelist and essayist, Edward Abbey, users navigate paths through a desert landscape that is being overturned through dam-building, road-building, mining, and industrial tourism. The project combines maps, photos, archival films, original video, and many other elements on a scrolling, virtual landscape suggestive of the Colorado River, its canyon lands, and the deserts of Utah, Arizona and California. Users arrive in a desert American West in the 1950s. The work incorporates nonfiction materials in an artistic environment to offer an interdisciplinary blend of art, writing, and scholarship. Recorded in the deserts of Utah, Arizona and California.

  2. Blue Velvet

    Blue Velvet is a documentary about Hurricane Katrina and its affect upon New Orleans, LA. “Combining sound, text, photography, video, and several maps, the piece sculpts an evocative and poignant landscape that nonetheless refuses all registers of nostalgia, insisting as it does that we locate Katrina and the Crescent City among multiple trajectories of policy, memory, and representation”

    Blue Velvet: Re-Dressing New Orleans in Katrina's Wake" is an interactive essay enabling its users to submerge themselves in a poetic wordscape describing the contours of American racial politics post-Katrina.

  4. Re:Cycle

    Re:Cycle is a generative ambient video art piece based on nature imagery captured in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.  Ambient video is designed to play in the background of our lives.  It is a moving image form that is consistent with the ubiquitous distribution of ever-larger video screens. The visual aesthetic supports a viewing stance alternative to mainstream media - one that is quieter and more contemplative - an aesthetic of calmness rather than enforced immersion.  An ambient video work is therefore difficult to create - it can never require our attention, but must always rewards viewer attention when offered.  A central aesthetic challenge for this form is that it must also support repeated viewing.  Re:Cycle relies on a generative recombinant strategy for ongoing variability, and therefore a higher measure of re-playability.  It does so through the use of two random-access databases: one database of video clips, and another of video transition effects.  The piece will run indefinitely, joining clips and transitions from the two databases in randomly varied combinations.

  5. The Dead Tower

    Explore a dark, mountainous landscape dominated by a gigantic tower. 

    Set in a dark and abstract dream world that revolves around a crashed bus, the atmospheric literary game environment The Dead Tower can be freely explored at full-screen with the mouse and keyboard. Leonardo Flores says about the project: “This narrative poem is arranged on a darkly atmospheric virtual world designed to both creep you out and pull you in…“. Like the proverbial moth, the reader’s attention is drawn towards the brightest things around: white words float in the air, static or rotating. And the lines of mezangelle verse both heighten the dread by telling fragments of a ghostly narrative prefigured by the bus crash site the reader finds herself in and soften the tone with hints about the interface that nudge the fourth wall.   6. Pyxis Byzantium

    Pyxis Byzantium is a hypermedia narrative investigation into the fall of Byzantium in 1453.  Surrounded by enemy forces for decades, the final invasion of the city was widely anticipated by some of the populace, denied by others, and a focus of wonder and prayer.  This piece imagines several different residents of the city, their fears and hopes, and their beliefs about the sources of destiny.  The navigation includes maps of the city, sacred holidays, and the chronology of the destruction.  Because of its extensive use of Flash, it is not currently playable in original form.

  7. Ink After Print

    Ink After Print is a digital literary installation exhibited in public settings such as libraries. The installation allows readers-users to perform, reenact and rewrite recombinant poems written by Peter-Clement Woetmann "and you" (user-reader). AS -- Ink After Print is an interactive, participatory, digital literary installation made in a collaboration between PIT-researchers, CAVI/Tekne Productions and Roskilde Libraries initiated during the Literature Takes Place (Litteraturen Finder Sted) project and first exhibited in 2012. Ink is designed to make people affectively engage with, and reflect on, the ergodic qualities of digital literature in public settings such as libraries and events. Through their engagement with Ink, people can – individually or collaboratively – produce poems by interacting with three books embedded with a custom-made sensor system, the DUL Radio. The interactive books let people control a floating sentence in an ocean of words toward a sheet of paper to produce a poem, all visualized on a large display. The sentences, written by Danish author Peter-Clement Woetmann, are retrieved from a database.

  8. Unknown Territories

    An interactive series about the exploration, exploitation and transformation of the American West.

    Following works by John Wesley Powell and Edward Abbey, filmmaker Roderick Coover creates actual and virtual explorations into the places they wrote about, the landscapes they imagined and contemporary land use.

    When John Wesley Powell first navigated the Colorado River in 1869, much of the great American desert was marked on U.S. government maps as an "unknown territory" -- unmapped lands known only to native cultures. His works name, narrative and mythologize the West and his encounters within it. Ironically, later, as U.S. Geographer, Powell came to recognized perils of unsustainable development, but his calls to restrict growth to natural watersheds were rejected.
