    Author description: The Last Performance [dot org] is a constraint-based collaborative writing, archiving and text-visualization project responding to the theme of lastness in relation to architectural forms, acts of building, a final performance, and the interruption (that becomes the promise) of community. The visual architecture of The Last Performance [dot org] is based on research into "double buildings," a phrase used here to describe spaces that have housed multiple historical identities, with a specific concern for the Hagia Sophia and its varied functions of church, mosque, and museum. The project uses architectural forms as a contextual framework for collaborative authorship. Source texts submitted to the project become raw material for a constantly evolving textual landscape.

  2. lala

    Extracts from Artist's Statement:

    In this piece, I use my childhood doll as an interface for engaging with text projected on a screen. The text is inspired by the types of behaviors a child attributes to her doll or imaginary friend, such as "It wasn't me! Lala was the one who broke the vase." The doll has a sensor inside of her that can detect position, which I use to control the speed of text filling up the screen.

    I used open-source code from Jared Tarbell's site as the basis for the text display. After I figured out how to read values from an accelerometer into Flash, I found a way to control the speed of the text based on the position of the sensor. Simple up-down motion wasn't so exciting, and I hit upon the idea of shaking the doll to "shake" the words out onto the screen - so I needed to capture the rate of change of the sensor's position (thanks Daniel Howe!). mouse-triggered demo page:

  3. my Molly (departed)

    my Molly (departed), formerly titled Twittering, is a textual instrument designed as a performance application. The pieces remixes text, image, audio, and video triggered through keyboard interaction. The work has been performed at the OpenPort Performance Festival (Chicago), ePoetry 2007 (Paris), The Codework Workshop (West Virginia University), The Electronic Literature in Europe Conference (Bergen Norway), and the Interrupt Festival (Brown University).

    The piece coexists with a novel (Free Dogma Press) that was written simultaneous to the development of this work. Where the novel plays on aspects of time, and draws from sources such as Joyce, Strindberg, Beckett, Dante, among others; the hypermedia textual instrument combines these in a more immediate, collapsed manner.

  4. The Good Captain

    The Good Captain is an adaptation of Herman Melville’s novella “Benito Cereno.” Melville’s original story relies upon the main character’s first-person perceptions of the events that unfold in front of him. This reliance on P.O.V. is why I chose to distribute the story using the web service Twitter. Twitter limits updates to 140 characters of text, and so this story is broken up into small, 2-3 line paragraphs. The temporal nature of this storytelling method required that the story include frequent reminders of previous events, to help keep readers aware of the context of the events. This was especially important given that the time span of the bulk of the events is about twelve hours, and the length of time that the story ran for was four months.

    The Good Captain began broadcasting over Twitter on November 3, 2007. It concluded on February 29, 2008.

  5. The Wave

    The Wave Electronic Illuminated Hypertext is a multisensory etext derived from a series of new media performances. The work explores and articulates a collection of meditations on myth, metaphor, and digital embodiment.

    An interactive assemblage of images, videodance, sound, animation, iconography, and text, The Wave creates an electronic architecture of hyper-dimensional poetic language. This electronic architecture expands and redefines the dramatic text as a fluid, animated, interactive infrastructure that exists in a liminal hyperspace between text and performance. The work expands and redefines the dance as dynamic, sensate, experiential process of inner transformation integrating the mind, body, and senses in metaphorical movement.

  9. Grande Enquête

    This webpage has been realised for the festival e-poetry 2007 in collaboration with Delphine Riss. During the festival, the participants were invited to vote at the following question:

    Selon vous, les travaux présentés lors du festival e-poetry 2007 (performances, installations, oeuvres) sont ils des oeuvres de poésie numérique?

    According to you, are the works presented at the e-poetry 2007 festival (performances, installations, piece of works) digital art works of poetry?

    Participants were also invited to add precisions in creating their own buttons where their comments were written on them. Other users could then add weights to these buttons by clicking on them.

    The goal of this project was to materialise the difficulty of defining what is digital art poetry and how it is received. While presenting the problem of the definition, the task was too not be closed up in only one: The different requests, potentially infinite, allowed to visualise a state of the reception of the digital poetry, skewed by our intervention.

  10. Datamatics

    "Datamatics is an art project that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world. It is a series of experiments in various forms - audiovisual concerts, installations, publications and CD releases - that seek to materialise pure data." As part of several datamatics exhibition and audiovisual performances, is the "test pattern" system. "test pattern is a system that converts any type of data (text, sounds, photos and movies) into barcode patterns and binary patterns of 0s and 1s. Through its application, the project aims to examine the relationship between critical points of device performance and the threshold of human perception." One exhibition setup of datamatics is data.tron. "data.tron [8K enhanced version]" is part of the datamatics project. The new work is an enhanced version of the audiovisual installation data.tron, where each single pixel of visual image is strictly calculated by mathematical principle, composed from a combination of pure mathematics and the vast sea of data present in the world.
