  1. Poemas no meio do caminho

    This  is a combinatory text. There are two versions of the text – two ways of reading it: horizontally and vertically. Both versions allow the reader to save her own textual production, and then to send that production to a weblog. The reader can recombine the text according to the paradigmatic axis of language: the reader selects, the machine morphs/combines. However,  some “obligatory” options resist. By quoting Dante, Poemas no meio do caminho is a metaphor of the reading practice: “poemas no meio do caminho da leitura” (“poems midway upon the journey of reading”). It suggests an ephemeral poetic construction that appears and vanishes in a click. On the one hand these poems destroy the sacredness of the poetic language; on the other they realize the poïesis.This work has won (ex-aequo) the 4t Premi Internacional "Ciutat de Vinaròs" de Literatura Digital.

    My Name Is Captain, Captain is a collaborative poem written in a language of word and image. The central metaphor is dead reckoning navigation, and the work as a whole has a peculiar relationship to the golden age of flight.

  3. Amor de Clarice

    Following Genette's forms of paratextuality, the process of quoting or re-writing in this poem involves a hypotext - the antecedent literary text (Clarice Lispector's "Amor") - and a hypertext, that which imitates the hypotext (the poem "Amor de Clarice"). Both hypotext and hypertext were performed and recorded by Nuno M. Cardoso, and later transcribed within Flash, where the author completed the integration of sound, animation, and interactivity. Following the hypotext/hypertext ontology, there are two different types of poems. In half of them (available from the main menu, on the left), the main poem (the hypertext) appears as animated text that can be clicked and dragged by the reader, with sounds assigned to the words. In these poems, the original text (the hypotext) is also present, as a multilayered, visually appealing, but static background. The sound for these movies was created by Carlos Morgado using recordings with readings of the poem.

  6. Labylogue

    Labylogue est un espace de conversation.

    Dans trois lieux différents reliés par Internet, Bruxelles, Lyon , Dakar , les visiteurs déambulent dans un labyrinthe virtuel en quête de l’autre.

    Deux à deux ils dialoguent en français.

    A mi-chemin entre le livre et la Bibliothèque de Babel de Borgès, les murs se tapissent de phrases générées en temps réel, qui sont autant d’interprétations du dialogue en cours. A son tour le texte fait l’objet d’une interprétation orale qui anime l’espace du labyrinthe tel un choeur de synthèse qui vagabonde sur les rives de la langue en action.

    La médiation numérique introduit dans la communication des couches d’interprétation qui échappent à l’intention brouillant parfois le sens. La parole reprend alors ses droits. Elle glisse sur l’interprétation de la machine en privilégiant le contact là où la trace écrite dérive.rive.

  7. Window

    As a poetic mediation on place and experience, Window encourages you to explore the things at the edges. The ordinary moments—sounds, sights, memories, thoughts—that make an environment familiar, that make it ‘home’. My inspiration came, and continues to come so often, from John Cage—and I made this work in 2012, the centenary of his birth. His music, writing, and thinking—the way he lived his life—are a wondrous integration of art and ordinary experience. Interwoven with fragmentary texts, themselves hidden at the edges, and only available through exploration, are a separate series of short essays. Some are about John Cage and some are personal reflections as I looked, listened and collected the sounds and images that provide the material for this piece. I did this over a period of a year—listening, looking, snapping photos and recording sounds. Arranged in ‘months’, there are various ways to interact with Window. The choice is yours—listening, reading, looking, and travelling from one time of year to another. For each month the images and sounds were actually recorded in the month concerned.

  8. CHAOSity

    One challenge of General Education is that of finding ways to develop student interest in, and enthusiasm for, reading written texts or critically viewing visual texts. CHAOSity was created to address that issue. CHAOSity is a collaborative, original cultural work that involves individual readers as co-creators. CHAOSity questions the "linear, rigidly logical development of plot" and the "facile interpretation of life's complexities" that strict adherence to linearity, what author Carole Maso calls "the tyranny of narrative," can imply. The resulting multi-threaded story, told in text, animation, images and sound, permits both linear and nonlinear reading. CHAOSity includes 49 prose/poems Flash movies, 49 event sounds and legend.

  9. ION 1

    ION 1 is a crowd-sourced series of 111 sound poems-in-progress by mic mac (Michael MacKenzie) in collaboration with the Post Art Poets spanning Gertrude Stein's ‘Tender Buttons’ (which can be freely read here: www.bartleby.com/140/). The work layers 7 (and in later instances as many as 32) readings of the ‘Tender Buttons’ poems into single clips. To participate, unaltered found or original human voice recordings may be submitted and will appear in subsequent installments of the poem. Send submissions to my email (below). An award system (called Copycoins) provides funds for more in-depth interaction with the poems. Statistics particular to each reading will appear in the sound-files’ [Youtube] descriptions. Each of the poems here are in their seventh installment. The playlists will grow and be modified as time passes; the poem is expected to run indefinitely - until I or the community lose(s) interest in it. Thank you.   10. F8MW9

    F8MW9 is a collaboration between Jim Andrews and margareta waterman. F8MW9 seeks randomly to play short parts of a sound file of vocalizing by waterman. the part of the sound file played is indicated visually. as the sound plays, a visual interpretation (drawn by waterman) of the vocalizing is revealed. In fact waterman is vocalizing her interpretation of the revealed visuals, ie, the vocals and the visuals coincide. Controls at the bottom of the piece allow the user to: a) Set the maximum duration (in milliseconds) of played audio snippets b) Press an infinity button to hear the whole audio file uninterupted (click the writing at top to exit this mode) c) Click a button to change the writing/glyphs that are rendered d) Clear the screen e) Set audio volume f) Go to a related waterman/andrews collaboration. The reader can also click the graphic or waveform to play the sound at that point. Includes an interview by Andrews of waterman about the sound and glyph visuals.
