  1. Catharsis

    This hypertext poem takes a simple concept and makes it a tour de force. Each word is a link to an image, not of any image, but of photographs which use blurred motion and other effects to convey a sense of speed and evoke the speaker’s tone. The title suggests that either the speaker is in need of catharsis, or the poem itself is the cathartic artistic expression.

  2. Gaffe / Stutter

    This multimedia work uses HTML5 and the JQuery library to produce a simple yet effective interface for it to unfold. The physical space between the sliding words GAFFE and STUTTER echo the Deleuzian dualities between the physicality of the mouth and its ability to break down and ingest food and produce language and meaning. Trettien uses this interface to establish other dualities in her poem: code and displayed language, signal and noise, drawing and writing, and more. (ELC 3)

  3. The Hunt For The Gay Planet

    anna anthropy’s The Hunt for the Gay Planet is a text-based Twine game that uses the medium of Twine to comment more broadly and bitingly on the status of queer representation in videogames. The work takes its premise from a mainstream online roleplaying game, Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, which in 2013 announced they were expanding their romance options in-game to include homosexual options, but only on a single planet in the galaxy. anthropy satirizes this decision with this beautifully retro piece, in which the player is invited to gradually explore the galaxy (looking under rocks and in caves) in search of a lesbian romance. The game serves as a powerful example of Twine’s potential as a platform for commenting on and engaging with AAA gaming, as Twine builds on the traditions of hypertext to allow for complex decision management and choice-driven experience design.   4. 18 Cadence

    18 Cadence is a storymaking machine where readers explore a house through a hundred years of history. Any piece of the story can be dragged and dropped onto a workspace area and repositioned, merged, and remixed, like magnetic fridge poetry for narrative. Readers can share and exchange the stories they make this way, and have created poetry, counter-narratives, collages, and many other stories and experiments. 18 Cadence was a Kirkus Reviews “Best Book App” of 2013, and received Honorable Mentions for the prestigious IGF Nuovo award and the Robert Coover Award for a Work of Electronic Literature.

  5. Queers in Love at the End of the World

    Queers in love at the End of the World is a hypertext game in which the reader experiences fleeting intimacy in a ten-second narrative. In the upper left of the browser window, a timer counting down the seconds prompts the reader to move quickly, advancing the narrative by clicking highlighted action words with little time to deliberate or savor the moments chosen before "Everything is wiped away."

    Anthropy writes of the work, "If you only had ten seconds left with your partner, what would you do with them? What would you say? It’s a game about the transformative, transcendent power of queer love, and is dedicated to every queer I’ve loved, no matter how briefly, or for how long."

    The work was inspired by a game competition, Ludum Dare, whose theme was "ten seconds." It was built with Twine, and makes use of a modified version of Stefano Russo’s timer Twine extension. It was made with support from the crowdfunding site patreon.

  6. Their Angelic Understanding

    In Their Angelic Understanding (2013) the player character lives in fear as the enemy of angels, whose visitations are not heavenly but tortuous violations. She has been scarred and wounded by an angel, and no one came to her aid. She is unconsoled, deeply conflicted, feeling somehow complicit in her own violation: “… I finally woke up, stupid stupid stupid, no one will save you, no one cares./ No one cares when an angel touches you. / I realized what I had to do./ I had to sacrifice my desire to be thought of as a good person.” She lights off on a surreal journey to confront those who have hurt her. At one point she has to clean the streets of amputated hands that fall ceaselessly from the sky, covering every surface. She has to play a cruel game of endurance in which she and her opponent must clutch red vampire tiles that cut their flesh and suck blood from their hands.

  7. Califia Reimagined

    Califia was published on CD-ROM by Eastgate Systems in 2000. It is a born-digital, interactive, multimedia hypertext fiction. It combines text, image, sound, animation, and structure to create a virtual world of time-space.  This novel-length piece, authored in Toolbook, was one of the most extensive e-lit fiction works of its time. Because of software and hardware advances, Califia was unplayable on any machine by 2010.  Accordingly, Califia Revisited was created to give scholars and curious readers some idea of what the original piece looked and sounded like.

    Author's Statement: 

    Califia Reimagined is a still-shot traversal that I created for the ELO Paris Conference (2013). It uses material from selected episodes of Califia- extracting small glimpses of the original work for contemporary reading devices. Similarly, for the video summary, I made a quick take from the Califia Reimagined website.
