  1. Je ziet hier iedereen voorbijkomen, de Westerparkse gedichten

    You See Everyone Go By is the result of a four year project in which Hans Kloos made a portrait of the Amsterdam district Westerpark by writing poems about particular places and people in the district. It was originally published as a CD-ROM that opened a full screen window with a map of Westerpark with the choice between gedichten (poems) and stemmen (voices). Clicking on one of these would open a new map of the district with dots appearing all over the map. The dots in their turn would lead to either the text or an animation of a poem or to a recording of the poem, read not by the author, but by someone with a direct connection to the poem. Je ziet hier iedereen voorbijkomen is not about the author, but about a place and its people.

    The work is in entirely in Dutch. Although on some occasions a poem has been translated into English, these translations are not included here.

    A dictation exercise. Girls in an educational black & white setting. Sentences (well-pronounced but sloppily) read by a male voice at dictation speed. The reaction of the girl in focus colors the content.

    Inanimate Alice depicts the life of a young girl growing up in the early years of the 21st century through her blog and episodic multimedia adventures that span her life from childhood through to her twenties. It has been created to help draw attention to the issue of electro-sensitivity and the potentially harmful pollution resulting from wireless communications.

  4. Amor-mundo, ou a vida, esse sonho triste

    Amor-mundo, ou a vida, esse sonho triste [World-love, or life, that sad dream] is an animated text which proposes generative schemes of both visual and audio animation. Building on metaphors and images from the works of the Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca, and using as its starting point the Actionscript code of Jared Tarbel, this work includes five poems: Part 1 - Deixa-me ser a tua mais triste mágoa; Part 2 - Eu queria ser o mar alto; Part 3 - Passo no mundo a ler o misterioso livro;  Part 4 - Sou o vento que geme e quer entrar; Part 5 - Horas mortas. The reader can add to these poems random spatial layers that allow the creation of multiple constellations of meaning.

  6. Like Stars in a Clear Night Sky

    Like Stars in a Clear Night Sky takes advantage of an elegant interface to present the type of lore often passed from parents to children. A voice, speaking Arabic, is paired with text in English, asking readers if they would like to hear a series of stories. Clicking blue stars in the night sky gives access to sparse stories. The reader is able to access these stories by clicking on certain stars in the night sky that appear to be brighter than the rest. These stories, which read more like poems, have to do with personal experiences with Ezzat's life and most have an open ending suggesting that it is up to the subject of the poem to decide how it will end. The use of the night sky works to make a connection with the audience in that just as we share the stars we look up at every night, Ezzat wishes to share his stories and experiences.

  7. When I Was President

    When I Was President is a portrait of absolute power as depicted by a fictional President of the United States. This President is unnamed and non-historical, that is, he has never, and could never, exist, yet what he represents is archetypal in nature and endures within the optimism, dangers, and limitations of political power. The work is created in Flash and divided into nine sections, each of which addresses a different Presidential act of power, and its consequences. The acts of power are elemental and metaphoric--they are simultaneously absurd, idiosyncratic, and impossible, yet they seem to tell some basic truth about the promise of absolute power, and its inherent failures. This work uses images, videos, and audio files acquired online, and modified by the artist. A credits page is included on the site.

    >>oh<< is a “concrete cyberpoem, an interactive audio-visual by Reiner Strasser. It is based on a visual poem by Dan Waber, created on a short poem by Jennifer Hill-Kaucher” (“>>oh<<'s website”). Gray dots simulating the effect of rain fall on the page and by passing over them with the pointer an audible “Oh” sound is triggered and a ripple effect extends out from it, briefly illuminating the background text of the poem. The uncovered text and the voiced “Ohs” differ between dots and when one has moused over each one a blue dot appears. When clicked, like a fresh rainfall it washes the entirety of the poem's background text into view.

  9. While Chopping Red Peppers

    Like the advice given by the speaker’s father, this kinetic and aural poem is all about “presentation and perfect arrangement.” It is about knowing where to cut visual and aural language, images and sound clips, arranging them on the poem’s space to make an impression. Yet while the speaker seems to be learning what her father has to say, one can sense the tension in her as she conforms to a vision of how one presents oneself and in what contexts. The masculinity of the images juxtaposed with the words “a firm handshake, after church” contrast with the more feminine figure we see leaning by the stove or hunched in silhouette. Listen to this poem and you’ll realize that it hovers in that space between tradition and innovation, expressive orality and through new media, conformity and rebellion, and different types of distance and proximity.   10. Angels, Avatars, and Virtual Ashes

    An audio piece about online memorials.  The voice on the recording is somewhat high-pitched and sped-up, like the exaggerated whine of a self-indulgent preteen girl. As we listen to the voice reading, we realize that it is reciting a list of comments attached to a YouTube video tribute to a young girl who has been murdered. The recording is simultaneously hilarious and disturbing, filled with talk of Angels and “virtual ashes spread across the Web.” Comments like “I miss her. She’s so beautiful in the pics. Who was she?” highlight the absurd and largely shallow nature of death as filtered by the Web, at the same time as the piece somewhat uncomfortably reminds us, even as we laugh at it, that we are part of the same circus too. Caught up in our everyday use of internet-­‐based communication technologies, we may tend to be blind to political and social ramifications that our uses of technology entail. A kind of flattening takes place when discourse transpires on the Web. Activities that we might under normal circumstances consider personal or private, such as mourning, become just another form of information.
