  1. Making Connections Visible: Building a Knowledge Base for Electronic Literature

    Developing a Network-Based Creative Community: Electronic Literature as a Model of Creativity and Innovation in Practice (ELMCIP) is a collaborative research project funded by the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) JRP for Creativity and Innovation. Focusing on the electronic literature community in Europe as a model of networked creativity and innovation in practice, ELMCIP is intended both to study the formation and interactions of that community and also to further electronic literature research and practice in Europe. The ELMCIP Knowledge Base is a publicly accessible online database that focuses on capturing core bibliographic data and archival materials about authors, creative works, critical writing, events, organizations, publishers, and teaching resources and on making visible the connections between creative and scholarly activities in the field.

    This presentation will focus on three aspects of the ELMCIP Knowledge Base in particular:

    1) Cross-referencing to make visible the emergence of creative and scholarly communities of practice

  2. The NT2 Hypermedia Art and Literature Directory: A New Knowledge Environment Devoted to the Valorization of Screen Culture

    Moving from a book culture to a screen culture requires a paradigm shift in the manner of producing culture and in ensuring its transmission, notably literary and artistic manifestations. Already in both the arts and literature, artists have appropriated the Web, radically changing its practices and language. As a result, the works produced, forged even, with new technologies are designed to be read or experienced using the Internet. Given these new formats, the usual strategies in literary theory, cinema studies and art history no longer suffice. The institutionalization of these works is not yet guaranteed either, so no bibliography or substantial listing exists.   3. European eLiterature Collection

    The European eLiterature Collection is a project developed as part of The eLiterature Research Project. The aim of the collection is to provide an essential tool to assist in formalizing e-Literature in Europe.

    In this respect, the European eLiterature Collection Board of Editors, evaluates, reviews, and publishes on the web works of Electronic Literature by European authors.

  4. Born-Again Bits: A Framework for Migrating Electronic Literature

    The intended audience of Born-Again Bits includes besides e-lit authors also the publishers, archivists, academics, programmers, and funding officers who will be necessary partners in an overall, renewable ecology of electronic literature. These other communities are already at work on digital preservation strategies. However, experimental e-lit has special qualities that make it an extreme case of the digital artifact. It is hoped that ELO's PAD initiative will contribute to other digital preservation strategies by ensuring that they accommodate e-lit and so, in the process, become more robust for all digital works.

  5. Digital Prohibition Piracy and Authorship in New Media Art

    The act of creation requires us to remix existing cultural content and yet recent sweeping changes to copyright laws have criminalized the creative act as a violation of corporate rights in a commodified world. Copyright was originally designed to protect publishers, not authors, and has now gained a stranglehold on our ability to transport, read, write, teach and publish digital materials.

    Contrasting Western models with issues of piracy as practiced in Asia, Digital Prohibition explores the concept of authorship as a capitalist institution and posits the Marxist idea of the multitude (à la Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt, and Paulo Virno) as a new collaborative model for creation in the digital age. Looking at how digital culture has transformed unitary authorship from its book-bound parameters into a collective and dispersed endeavor, Dr. Guertin examines process-based forms as diverse as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, performance art, immersive environments, smart mobs, hacktivism, tactical media, machinima, generative computer games (like Spore and The Sims) and augmented reality.

  6. Archiving Workshop

    In discussions with many practitioners of E-Literature over the past two years, the subject of
    Archiving (a focus at the Brown Conference) continues as a major challenge in the field. The rapid changes that continue to take place as electronic media becomes more mobile and miniaturized have made even recent archiving techniques problematic. The establishment of specific author archives – and the methods for creating these – has also been developing in the last couple of years.

    In response to requests from several ELO Members, I am proposing a one-day Workshop Session on Archiving. This Workshop will take place on Wednesday, June 20, in the morning and afternoon before Registration and the Opening Reception. Proposed topics include: A. The Overall Issue - Tech changes in E-lit 1990 – 2012 – overall plans for Archiving; B. The Nature of Obsolescence - what software/platforms/works are currently threatened?; C. Technologies of Archiving - Where are we in this process - what kinds of archiving strategies are being used? What are the copyright issues?; D. Existing Archives and the future of Archiving. Do we want to mention the PAD document from ELO?

  7. Communitizing Electronic Literature

    Electronic literature is an important evolving field of artistic practice and literary study. It is a sector of digital humanities focused specifically on born-digital literary artifacts, rather than on using the computer and the network to redistribute, analyze, or recontextualize artifacts of print culture. Works of electronic literature appeal to configurative reading practices. The field of electronic literature is based on a gift economy and developing a network-based literary culture built on the collaborative practices of a globally distributed community of artists, writers, and scholars. This article situates the development of the field of electronic literature within academe, some of the institutional challenges currently confronting the field, and its potential for further development.

  9. How has technology changed writing and literature?

    Matthew G. Kirschenbaum, a professor of English at the University of Maryland and director of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, explored questions of technology, research, content and writing at the intersection of literary and technological history during an ATLAS Speaker Series presentation Oct. 1, 2012.

    Drawing from his book, “Track Changes: A Literary History of Word Processing,” Kirschenbaum talked about how word processors have changed the history and culture of authorship and how technology has changed the relationship of writers to their craft. 

    This event was a collaboration between the ATLAS Institute, CU’s Department of English, The ICJMT (Information, Communication, Journalism, Media and Technology) Initiative, University Libraries ScriptaLab and Friends of the Libraries.

  10. Writing the World: Toward a Systems Approach to E-Writing

    Code – The Language of Our Time, new media poetics, and p0es1s. The Aesthetics of Digital Poetry, are three widely regarded collections dealing with e-writing and its code from a humanist perspective. As an indication of how emergent this field of study is, in the several essays and papers that treat computer program code in these works, almost no actual code is presented for analysis or as concrete examples of the abstractions that their authors discuss.

    This is altogether understandable. There was no aesthetic arc hovering over and guiding the transition from legacy print writing to e-writing. In fact there was virtually no transition. Ewriting was suddenly there (here). And its foundation, program code, was an immediate fact that few students of literature had been trained to understand. Before they could, a framework had to be built within which this new literature, whose tools of craft are so obscure and esoteric, could be reasoned about and judged. Program code problematizes literary study at its very essence—at the act of creation.
