    The paper tries to figure out what happens to the notion of the textual whole (or the literary work) if it can appropriate and mix texts not yet published, cannot be read in its entirety, if only a few of its signifiers can or will be shared by all its readers,  there’s no clear termination point to its metamorphosis, and it sets conditions and constraints to its reading process ranging from temporal limitations to personal and personalized perspectives. Perhaps something has to change, but what exactly and how and why?

  2. Bridging Intertextuality and Intermediality from a Cultural and Literary Perspective

    In this paper we argue that technological applications, and the intermedial practices that the World Wide Web allow can play an important role in developing educational and cultural policies and practices, expanding the stock of shared heritage while maintaining cultural diversity, and multiplicity, despite problems such as accessibility, the digital divide and growing economic focus, copyright and open-access, the organization of vast amounts of information and its preservation as part of our cultural heritage. Our previous research has emphasized the potential of intermediality to serve as a model that not only increases our understanding of the mechanisms of media convergence but also applies to parallel phenomena in intercultural and educational contexts. We have proposed that the basis for a constructive conceptualisation of social change is mediated through technology and that the good use of intermediality as a vehicle for socio-cultural needs to be further explored, both theoretical and practically, in its aspects of production, distribution, and usability.

  4. Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literary

    Hayles’s book is designed to help electronic literature move into the classroom. Her systematic survey of the field addresses its major genres, the challenges it poses to traditional literary theory, and the complex and compelling issues at stake. She develops a theoretical framework for understanding how electronic literature both draws on the print tradition and requires new reading and interpretive strategies. Grounding her approach in the evolutionary dynamic between humans and technology, Hayles argues that neither the body nor the machine should be given absolute theoretical priority. Rather, she focuses on the interconnections between embodied writers and users and the intelligent machines that perform electronic texts.

  6. Is Life Like a Book or a Smart Phone? Why Form in Fiction Matters

    Rob Wittig's 17 minute video lecture, recorded for a TEDx event at the University of Minnesota / Duluth, lays out some ideas about connections between the design of printed books and a particular idea of life in contemporary culture, in contrast to a model of life based on postmodern ideas of identity. He also references the context of literary history in considering the forms of literature that might be suited to a culture of multitasking and smart phones, at one point comparing Don Quixote to a contemporary gadget-obsessed digital native. The talk and accompanying slideshow provide a useful introduction to some important questions about the relationship between contemporary technologies and literary form.

  9. Intermediation: The Pursuit of a Vision

    Twenty-first century literature is computational, from electronic works to print books created as digital files and printed by digital presses. To create an appropriate theoretical framework, the concept of intermediation is proposed, in which recursive feedback loops join human and digital cognizers to create emergent complexity. To illustrate, Michael Joyce's afternoon is compared and contrasted with his later Web work, Twelve Blue. Whereas afternoon has an aesthetic and interface that recall print practices, Twelve Blue takes its inspiration from the fluid exchanges of the Web. Twelve Blue instantiates intermediation by creating coherence not through linear sequences but by recursively cycling between associated images. Intermediation is further explored through Maria Mencia's digital art work and Judd Morrissey's The Jew's Daughter and its successor piece, The Error Engine, by Morrissey, Lori Talley, and Lutz Hamel.

  10. From Papyrus to Hypertext: Toward the Universal Digital Library

    Reflections and predictions of technology's effect on reading and writing In this study, Christian Vandendorpe examines how digital media and the Internet have changed the process of reading and writing, significantly altering our approaches toward research and reading, our assumptions about audience and response, and our theories of memory, legibility, and context. Reflecting on the full history of the written word, Vandendorpe provides a clear overview of how materiality makes a difference in the creation and interpretation of texts. Surveying the conventions of reading and writing that have appeared and disappeared in the Internet's wake, Vandendorpe considers various forms of organization, textual design, the use (and distrust) of illustrations, and styles of reference and annotation. He also examines the novel components of digital texts, including hyperlinks and emoticons, and looks at emergent, collaborative genres such as blogs and wikis, which blur the distinction between author and reader. Looking to the future, reading and writing will continue to evolve based on the current, contested trends of universal digitization and accessibility.
