  5. Interrupt II Studio

In computing, an interrupt (IRQ) is a command sent to the central processor (CPU), demanding its attention and calling for the initiation of a new task. Interrupt 2012 is a three-day international studio celebrating writing and performance in digital media. It will feature readings, performances and screenings, along with Interrupt Discussion Sessions (IRQds), all aimed at investigating the theme of interruption in digital literary art and performance. Events will take place February 10-12, 2012 on the Brown University campus. Interrupt 2012 is organized by graduate and undergraduate students associated with Brown University’s Department of Literary Arts and RISD Digital+Media. As organizers, we are interested in the interruptions that digitally-mediated writing and performance can initiate, as well as in identifying the systematic functions that they can interrupt.

  7. A Night at the Cybertexts

This electronic literary reading was arranged as short films are on a festival reel. Each of the works briefly presented in this "reel-time" event was written since DAC 2000. The authors reading came from diverse backgrounds, having begun their electronic writing endeavors in StorySpace (Jackson, Moulthrop, Strickland), on the Web (Coverley, Gillespie, Memmott, Rettberg), in cybertext poetry using HyperCard (Cayley), in commercial gaming (Swigart), and in interactive fiction forms (Montfort).

Alexandra Saemmer and Lucile Haute performed "Conduit d'Aération” and other works in the final performance of the Digital Arena electronic literature reading series at the Bergen Public Library. This mixed media performance / narrative centers on the mystery of a body found in a ventilation shaft above a bank, and develops into a speculative web of interpersonal and political relations.

  9. Teaching Creative Writing with Python

In this presentation, I present my methodology for teaching the course, along with my successes (and my failures) in using Python in a creativeand pedagogical setting. I touch on the history of algorithmic poetics, and present some of the sample code used in the class. My goal is to show how this class has helped computer programmers, creative writers, makers and other artists working with interactivity to incorporate one kind of "electronic literature" into their practice, and to provide a model for other instructors.
