    A retelling of the classic story one letter at a time. If fans can't get into the mind of Star Wars creator George Lucas, why not get into his typewriter? Taking us back before the days of the 300 baud modem, Stefans's piece brings each character in the Star Wars cast steadily before the eyes of the viewer and asks that we read — or at least try to read — in a new, unusual way. The sound effect at the end of every line adds a touch of "bell" lettrism.

  2. Talking Cure

    Talking Cure is an installation that includes live video processing, speech recognition, and a dynamically composed sound environment. It is about seeing, writing, and speaking — about word pictures, the gaze, and cure. It works with the story of Anna O, the patient of Joseph Breuer's who gave to him and Freud the concept of the "talking cure" as well as the word pictures to substantiate it. The reader enters a space with a projection surface at one end and a high-backed chair, facing it, at another. In front of the chair are a video camera and microphone. The video camera's image of the person in the chair is displayed, as text, on the screen. This "word picture" display is formed by reducing the live image to three colors, and then using these colors to determine the mixture between three color-coded layers of text. One of these layers is from Joseph Breuer's case study of Anna O. Another layer of text consists of the words "to torment" repeated — one of the few direct quotations attributed to Anna in the case study.

It consists of nine main sections, including readings augmented by projections and recorded voice, and concludes with a song.

  4. Baby Work

    BABY WORK is the 3rd edition of Cheang's LOCKER BABY PROJECT which consist of:
    BABY PLAY (2001, NTT[ICC], Tokyo) and BABY LOVE (2005, Palais de Tokyo, Paris).
    The Locker Baby project conceived in 2001 reflects a time when bioscience is accused
    of out of control and scifi fantasia brings forward the future. Deriving from Ryu
    Murakami's noted novel Coin Locker Babies (1980) of post-war Japan , the Locker Baby
    Project further contests the mother’s heart beats that are so desired for clone babies
    born out of lockers. A fictional scenario set in 2030 - the transnational DPT (DollyPolly
    Transgency) produces and engages clone locker babies in negotiating human "Memory"
    and "Emotion”. The clone baby holds the key to retrieve the networked inter-sphere of
    ME-data embedded in a playfield of sonic imagery triggered only by human interaction.
    In BABY PLAY, an oversized baby football field with clone baby players; in BABY LOVE, a
    ride in 6 motorized fairground teacups with love song remixed by clone babies; in BABY

    abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz is a sound toy, a performance tool and an art work in its own right. You can play with the letter-creatures and watch and listen how they interact with each other or use them to produce soundscapes like you would with an electronic musical instrument. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz blends art, biology, fun and physics to create a unique, dynamic and interactive sound ecology.

    This app is the result of joerg piringer's ongoing research of vocal sounds and their relation to dynamic typography in the form of performance, video and software art.

  6. Contemplating Flight

    Framed by various folktales, "Contemplating Flight" explores established female representations and further tests the limitations of participation in a challenging narrative grammatology.

    Artist Statement:
    Like previous artworks on 6amhoover.com "Contemplating Flight" explores the interplay between digital narrative, image and interaction. It aims to question the paradigm of interaction equating to empowerment.

    Bettelheim like many ponders the importance of the forest "Since ancient times the near impenetrable forest in which we get lost has symbolized the dark, hidden, near-impenetrable world of our unconscious. If we have lost the framework which gave structure to our past life and must now find our way to become ourselves, and have entered this wilderness with an as yet undeveloped personality, when we succeed in finding our way out we shall emerge with a much more highly developed humanity."   7. Disposable Language

    This performance is based on Memmott’s video poem “NONCE.EXECUTOR” a poem that juxtaposes words with phrases and images that somehow define or describe them. The dancers are positioned between the screen and a disheveled blonde doll sitting on the front of the stage with a spotlight shining on it. The dancers’ movements are very doll-like, making stiff movements that emphasize their joints and how they bend and rotate on dolls. Are the dancers an explanation or description of the doll?

  8. Expansive Mayhem

    The interpretive dance performance seeks to evoke the experience of a concussion and does so by clustering six dancers on a side of the stage using red lighting to suggest a sense of the inside of the speaker’s head. When the dancers are clustered, swaying semi-coherently, they evoke the sense of a brain function normally, but as the piece progresses it begins to unravel, as the dancers spiral out of control. Their disjointed movements as they each dance on their own, spread around the stage mimics the cognitive impact of a concussion, echoed by the language hovering over them. The dance performance concludes by returning to normal function, urgently, as one of the dancers runs around the reorganized collective, as if trying to hold them together by sheer force of will as the screen and stage fade to black, leading us to wonder. Has the brain been healed? Has normal language function returned?

  9. Etymon / Encarnación

    The opening performance in “Language to Cover a Wall” is about the word made flesh: Glazier reads his poem “Etymon / Encarnación” while a young woman dances to the rhythms of his voice. The words juxtaposed in the title both gesture towards primeval origins of language: etymon refers to the origins of words, while encarnación is about the immaterial gaining a body. And we can’t help but notice the bodies on stage: Glazier sitting in a chair, reading his poem engrossed in the words on the page, gently swaying like José Feliciano. The contrast of a young female dancer in a white dress, interpreting lines of sounded breath with her body, bending her articulations with an agility matched only by the poet’s vocal articulation of the poem.

  10. The World As Yours

    This performance is about circularity: counterclockwise rotation of letters and words around a central axis on screen, dancers enacting different kinds of spins and gyrating movements focused around a globe. Each concentric line rotates at different speeds, aligning the letters from different lines to generate intriguing combinations. As the performance progresses, the word rotation gradually speeds up until the words become a rapid stream, suggesting an acceleration of time. The dancer’s movements speed up as well, as their playful interactions with the globe become increasingly frantic yet gentle, much like the music by The Kronos Quartet.
