    Digital poetry uses both the machine and natural language, therefore the experience of digital poetry always lives on the borders of artifice and art or appearance and essence, where the borders fades. The essay searches for a native experience of poetry within digital media which is not a translation, representation or Ecphrasis of an existing piece of poetry by focusing on inter-activity and programming that make the poet-programmer and reader-player to meet and be involved in a poem; The essay tries to reveal the limitations of the machine language in creating a digital poem by concentrating on the syntax as an open-source consciousness of the natural language and the non-open-source nature of operating systems and compilers in the instant of writing poetry as the consciousness of the machine.

  7. Primal Affective Ground and Digital Poetry

    Since the first symbolic scripts emerged, language has always been visual. My own work explores how language's visual can be read both as art and as poetry; how affect is amplified by sound; how generative and combinatorial layouts of text-video-sound open art from linear readings into infinite variations perspectives.
    For ELO, I am interested in creating an artist talk that utilizes content derived from two essays on digital poetry written for my comprehensive exams in the summer of 2009. The original essays are entitled: "Affecting Language: interdisciplinary explorations of emotion (new media, neuroscience, phenomenology and poetry)" and "Defining Creative Conduits: mediations on writing in digital media". Since both essays (as take-home exams) were each written over a brief 72 hour span, I look fwd to the opportunity of synthesizing and refining their argument into a presentation format.

  8. Ocotillo

    This is an artist's talk about "Ocotillo." It is a textual and visual work. The basic idea is to read from generated arrangements of textual strings, performing real-time versions of poetic works. These are not generator works but deliberate modifications within textual fields, a continuing stage in the evolution of this particular, and literary rooted form of practice. The objective of this creative work is to push these kinds of concentrated poetic textuality further, offering it as one possible direction in the field.   9. Poetry 4 U: Pinning poems under/over/through the streets

    This article explores how a new generation of smartphones, social software, GPS and other location-based technologies offer the ability to create new cultural spaces and publication models. These technologies allow us to digitally superimpose information on the physical world which, in turn, allows for the re-imagining of places and even identity. In this article a locative and social media art project is presented that engages with Melbourne’s status as the second UNESCO City of Literature. The project brings poetry into the street while, at the same time, occupying the floating worlds of social media. By pinning community-generated poetry to site-specific spaces on Google Maps, the article argues that a layer of narrative can be added to the readers’ perceptions of their immediate surroundings when viewing the site-specific poems through their mobile phones. Finally, the article considers the implications of Web 2.0, smartphones and location-based technologies for creative writing and arts practices.

  10. Das Cantigas como Processos Combinatórios: Protótipo de um Trabalho de Geração Textual e Intertextual a Partir da Poesia dos Cancioneiros e de Releitura de Salette Tavares

    O objectivo deste trabalho, provisoriamente intitulado "Cantiga", é lançar as bases de um projecto que possa apresentar, comparar e agenciar, por via da intertexualidade e da participação, um diálogo entre cantigas medievais (a poesia do trovadorismo) e algumas releituras que delas foram feitas por poetas portugueses contemporâneos (no âmbito do experimentalismo literário português, neste caso, um poema de Salette Tavares). Trata-se portanto de um protótipo, mais do que um trabalho finalizado. Como em outros trabalhos de investigação criativa que tenho feito, pretendo aqui fazer uso das potencialidades do computador como máquina criativa, como gestor e manipulador de símbolos numéricos.
