  1. International Workshop on Databases and Bibliographic Standards for Electronic Literature

    This Consortium for Electronic Literature (CELL) workshop presents international projects that document, curate, and present research on electronic literature: born-digital literary forms such as hypertext fiction, kinetic poetry, interactive drama, location-based narrative, multimedia literary installations, and other types of poetic experiences made for the networked computer.

    Since June of 2010, as part of the HERA-funded ELMCIP Project, the University of Bergen's Electronic Literature Research Group has been developing the ELMCIP Knowledge Base (http://elmcip.net/knowledgebase), a platform positioned to become one of the leading research tools in this area of the digital humanities.

    The primary goal of the workshop is to bring together members of several international projects working on the documentation of electronic literature. Representives of projects from the United States, Canada, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Australia, and Norway will gather to pubicly present work on their projects, and to discuss how to best establish an international research infrastructure for the field.

  2. Literature and the Digital Society

    There is no doubt today that computer science impacts strongly on literature. New forms have been created, works are abundant, and dynamic university has built a strong, specific field of research. The complexity of the field requires a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists in literature, communication, hypermedia, and the art.

    Along with the development of this field, innovative educational activities to teach this literature are being developed. Thecomputer also offers powerful tools to transcribe and transmit in digital form works originally intended for other media. More generally, the relationship between computers and literature creates social benefits by offering new ways to read and write,a new "being together" around a work.

    All these activities have been changing rapidly in recent years and the European workshop "Literature and Digital Society" aims to bring together researchers operating in different contexts and to federate them in a European network.

  3. Getting Started in the Digital Humanities with DHCommons

    Digital methodologies and new media are changing the landscape of research and teaching in modern languages and literatures. Scholars can now computationally analyze entire corpora of texts or preserve and share materials through digital archives. Students can engage in authentic applied research linking text to place, or study Shakespeare in a virtual Globe Theater. In the face of all the digital humanities buzz--from the MLA to the New York Times to Twitter--where can scholars interested in the field turn to get started? This three-hour preconvention workshop welcomes language and literature scholars who wish to learn about, start, or join digital scholarly projects for research and/or teaching. Representatives of major digital humanities projects and initiatives will share their expertise on project design, available resources and opportunities, lead small-group training sessions on technologies and skills to help participants get started, and be available for follow-up one-on-one consultations later in the day.

  4. PW12 Performance Writing Weekend

    The weekend comprises performances, readings, a workshop on Writing & Mapping, ‘events on the plinth', an exhibition and discussions about multi- and inter-medial writing. We will be considering how, as the printed book comes under threat, new writing will be made, displayed and talked about. See attached PDF full details.

  5. Workshop on Curating and Exhibiting Electronic Literature

    This workshop, which will include participants from Bergen cultural institutions and UiB researchers, as well as international expert speakers, is intended to examine the growing trend towards the exhibition of electronic literature in art venues, such as museums and galleries, and to examine models of curating and exhibiting electronic literature in these environments. In addition to providing an opportunity for discussion and analysis of what happens to the situation of digital literary artifacts when they are presented in gallery environments, this workshop will provide an important planning opportunity.

  6. Exploring Paratexts in Digital Contexts

    This day-long workshop revolves around the notion of paratext, a literary theory first presented by French narratologist Gérard Genette in 1987 (Seuils / English translation "Paratexts. Thresholds of Interpretation" 1997).
    Originally envisioned in relation to manuscripts and printed text, the theory of paratext ambitioned to describe how texts materialise through the distribution and presentation of textual and contextual information that accompanies and structures text.
    In digital contexts, the paratextual dimension tends to exhibit new qualities.This workshop focuses on paratext theory in digital realms and explore how paratext may offer a common ground for scholars in information and library science and in other humanistic disciplines.

  7. Digital Methods Winter School 2013 and Mini-Conference

    The 2013 Digital Methods Winter School is devoted to emerging alternatives to big data. The Barcamp, Hackathon, Hack Day, Edit-a-thon, Data Sprint, Code Fest, Open Data Day, Hack the Government, and other workshop formats are sometimes thought of as "quick and dirty." The work is exploratory, only the first step, outputting indicators at most, before the serious research begins. However, these new formats also may be viewed as alternative infrastructures as well as approaches to big data in the sense of not only the equipment and logistics involved (hit and run) but also the research set-up and protocols, which may be referred to as "short-form method." The 2013 Digital Methods Winter School is dedicated to the outcomes and critiques of short-form method, and is also reflexive in that it includes a data sprint, where we focus on one aspect of the debate about short- vs. long-form method: data capture. To begin, at the Winter School the results of a data sprint from a week earlier (on counter-Jihadists) will be presented, including a specific short-form method for issue mapping.

  8. Paratext in Digital Culture: 
Is Paratext Becoming the Story? Pasts, Presents and Futures of Paratext in Digital Culture

    In December 2012, a one-day workshop "Exploring Paratexts in Digital Contexts" was organized at the University of Bergen by the Digital Culture Research Group. The point of departure of this first workshop was paratextual theory as it was first articulated by Gérard Genette in 1987 (Seuils / English translation Paratexts. Thresholds of Interpretation 1997). This event was followed by the book Examining Paratextual Theory and its Applications in Digital Culture edited by Nadine Desrochers and Daniel Apollon (IGI Global, forthcoming Summer 2014). These two initiatives have revealed a strong interest in the academic community for appraising the potential and limits of paratextual theory in digital culture.

    
The Digital Culture and Electronic Literature Research Groups at UiB organizes this follow-up workshop Paratext in Digital Culture: Is Paratext Becoming the Story? to share ongoing research on paratextual devices, functions and strategies in digital culture and brainstorm about new research opportunities. The participants will explore further how paratext and related concepts may contribute to a better understanding of the nature and function of digital objects.

  9. PRISM Breakup

    On October 4–6, 2013, Eyebeam hosted the first event of its kind, PRISM Breakup, a series of art and technology events dedicated to exploring and providing forms of protection from surveillance. This event came about in part from Eyebeam’s mission to support the work of artists who critically expose technologies and examine their relationship to society, as well as offering continued support to its alumni following their residencies. The gathering brought together a wide spectrum of artists, hackers, academics, activists, security analysts and journalists for a long weekend of meaningful conversation, hands-on workshops, and an art exhibition that was open October 4–12.
