  1. Early Authors of E-Literature, Platforms of the Past

    A detailed discussion of the exhibit “Early Authors of Electronic Literature: The Eastgate School, Voyager Artists, and Independent Productions” (now installed at the University of Washington). Grigar looks specifically at the major technological shifts in affordances and constraints provided by early computer interfaces and the ways in which e-literature writers from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s worked with and against these interfaces. For example, she discusses the command-line interface of the Apple IIe – which was released in 1983 – as an example of an interface that exemplifies an ideology wholly different from the now dominant Graphic User Interface. Thus, the command-line interface also makes possible entirely different texts and entirely different modes of thinking/creating such as that exemplified by bp Nichols' “First Screening” from 1984.

    A roundtable discussion featuring seven experts from large digital humanities projects. Panelists were given three minutes to explain, briefly, their current digital humanities project before the moderator asked a series of questions that included variations of the following: How did you move "to the next level" in DH? What challenges have you faced doing DH work? How have you funded your work? The bulk of the discussion was devoted to questions from the audience.

New platforms are causing publishers to return to their roots as booksellers while booksellers are once again becoming publishers. Open-access models of publishing are creating new models for content creation and distribution as small print-focused presses are experiencing a renaissance. Come see!

  5. Distributed Matters: Production of Presence and the Augmented Textuality of VR

    The paper proposes a descriptive (i.e., non-hermeneutical/presence-driven) reading of the virtual reality work Screen by Noah Wardrip-Fruin et al. (2002) designed for Brown University’s CAVE. Because of the non-triviality of its demands, one might argue that Screen is as much about its theme (memory/forgetting) as it is a self-referential study on VR as a literary medium. In this context, seemingly incompatible notions such as those of "flickering signifiers" (Hayles, 1999) and “presence effects” (Gumbrecht, 2004) can operate as coextensive tropes of analysis. Are we to speak of a new phenomenology of language wherein processing protocols precede literary semiosis? Does proprioceptive awareness of the linguistic mark not also trigger a concurrent semiotic reaction obligatorily leading to an act of interpretation?

  6. Porting E-Poetry: The Case of First Screening

    This presentation seeks to examine issues around the practice of porting electronic literature,
    particularly E-poetry by examining the case of First Screening by bpNichol, a Canadian poet who
    programmed a suite of e-poems in Apple BASIC in 1984. This work was preserved, documented, ported, curated, and published in Vispo.com in 2007 by a collaborative group of poets and programmers: Jim Andrews, Geof Huth, Lionel Kearns, Marko Niemi, and Dan Waber. This publication consists of a curated collection of four different versions of First Screening which I will analyze in my presentation:

    1. The original DSK file of the 1984 edition, which can be opened with an Apple IIe emulator, along with the Apple BASIC source code as a text file, and scanned images of the printed matter
    published with the 51/4 inch floppy disks it was distributed in.

    2. A video captured documentation of the emulated version in Quicktime format.

    3. The 1993 HyperCard version, ported by J. B. Hohm, along with the printed matter of that
    published edition.

    4. A JavaScript version of First Screening ported by Marko Niemi and Jim Andrews.

  7. Post-Processing Translations of E-Lit Works and Scholarship

    The workshop is meant to make use of the present scholars from diverse language backgrounds as a resource to document their field in their original language. It focuses in particular on documenting works and papers written in languages other than English and seeks to draft translations for descriptions. An endeavour all those who do not have an understanding of a respective language, are dependent upon in order to give a particular language community the visibility they are in need of to allow appropriate scholarship in a particular nation.

    A work without translation is a blind spot in research for those unfamiliar with its language of origin. The English translation provides, at least the chance to be recognized in research and offers a starting point for a dialogue with its author.

  8. The (Problematic) Issue to Evaluate Literariness: Digital Literature Between Legitimation and Canonization

    The first experiments in digital literary forms started as early as
    the 1960s. From then, up to the mid-90’s, was a period that,
    according to Chris Funkhouser (2007), can be considered as
    a ‘laboratory’ phase. The rise of the Internet has resulted in the
    proliferation of creative proposals. The first involves indexing
    creative works in the form of databases, sometimes giving access
    to hundreds of works without any hierarchical order. Since 2000,
    digital literature has been experiencing a new phase, marked by
    the creation of anthologies. Over the years, the evaluation and
    selection criteria have proved to be as problematic as they are
    necessary for these projects. The main issue of this paper is to
    provide a critical discussion of these criteria.

  9. Performing the Digital Archive: Remediation, Emulation, Recreation

    The aim of ‘PO.EX '70-80: A Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature’ (http://po-ex.net/) is to represent the intermedia and performative textuality of a large corpus of experimental works and practices in an electronic database, including some early instances of digital literature. This paper shows how the performativity of digital archiving and recoding is explored through the remediation, emulation and recreation of works in the PO.EX archive. Preservation, classification and networked distribution are also discussed as editorial and representational problems within the current database aesthetics in knowledge production.   10. The Compelling Charm of Numbers: Writing for and thru the Network of Data

    In postmodern times writing is different. With Facebook the personal diary has returned, reformulated for the 21st century. But this is not the diary as we use to know it. Here time gains a persistence and epistemological import and the person or persons recorded shift from being narrator to the quantified subject. This is not only a philosophical or psychological issue but also an economic and political one.
