    Mexica: 20 Years–20 Stories [20 años–20 historias] contains 20 short narratives developed by the computer program MEXICA. Plots describe fictional situations related to the Mexicas (also known as Aztecs), ancient inhabitants of what today is Mexico City. This is the first book of short-stories produced completely by a creative agent capable of evaluating and making judgments about its own work, as well as incorporating into its knowledge-base the pieces it produces. By contrast with other, statistical models, MEXICA is inspired by how humans actually develop fictional stories. The book, in both Spanish and English, also includes source references related to the program. Preface by Fox Harrell.

    The first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two was released on July 11, 2017 for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, iOS and Android. It continued the story from the first season, with the player's choices affecting elements within Season 2. Patton Oswalt, Catherine Taber, Ashley Johnson, and Scott Porter were confirmed to continue voicework for the new season. The game supports the new Crowd Play feature that Telltale introduced in Batman: The Telltale Series, allowing up to 2,000 audience members to vote on decisions for the player using Twitch or other streaming services.

  6. Polly Returns

    Digital contemporary retake of Shelley Lake's eerie video 'Polly gone' (1988). 'Polly Gone' was a critique of the gendered role of the housewife. Although the music is 1980s techno, the eeriness and themes somewhat recalls Chantal Akerman's video 'Saute ma ville' (1968). In 'Polly Returns', the robot has taken a more humane physiognomy, and the relation to the screen has changed. Polly has become an integral part of the screen, and her gendered role has acquired complexity that goes beyond domestic chores. Rolling text instructs her in a very neoliberal way how to be simultaneously a perfect housewife, a politically conscious citizen, a productive worker and a caring mum, among others.

    Commissioned by Peterborough’s Platform8 / Jumped Up Theatre and devised by One to One Development Trust / Dreaming MethodsThe Dreamcatcher gathered people’s aspirations and dreams about the city of Peterborough in the UK, through audio, film, creative interventions and social media. This was woven into a projected interactive digital art installation and Virtual Reality experience primarily for the Oculus Rift. Artists from Jumped Up Theatre gathered dreams from local school children, festival goers and shoppers.

  9. The Character Thinks Ahead

    The Character Thinks Ahead (version 2) by Hazel Smith and Roger Dean is focused on the computerized generation of creative writing using deep learning neural nets. It knits together visual, sonic, linguistic and literary elements that all interact with each other. Of the three dynamically rolling columns of text in the upper part of the screen, the middle presents three pre-composed poetic texts that suggest ideas, feelings and contexts to do with war, hierarchy and competition respectively. The two columns on either side display text generation using deep learning nets: in the left column the text is generated by character, in the other it is generated by word. In the bottom part of the screen there are also three distinct elements to the display. An animated word cloud in the middle highlights features of the ongoing texts. To the left of it is a dynamic spectral visualisation of a (pre-recorded) rendering of the live speech: this is live-transformed to provide a sonic output visualized spectrally on the right.

  10. Bots

    Momenteel onderzoek ik de mogelijkheden om (chat)bots als poëtisch gereedschap in te zetten. Dit onderzoek wordt ondersteund door het Nederlands Letterenfonds en valt onder de regeling Digitale Literatuur. In 2017 organiseerde ik als onderdeel hiervan in Perdu een tweedaagse workshop in samenwerking met collectief Hackers&Designers en Botsquad.

    Mijn eerste bevindingen en experimenten werden gepubliceerd in het “Vintage-nummer” van DWB, 2018-1. Daarnaast kruipen momenteel verschillende chatbotjes rond op deze site. Deze botjes bevinden zich in hun peuterpuberteit, er gaat nog wel eens iets mis. Naar aanleiding van de gesprekken die ze voeren, probeer ik ze te verbeteren. Spreek ze gerust aan, wellicht vindt u uw woorden nog eens terug in de poëzie.
