  1. Legends of Michigami: Riding the Rust Belt

Riding the Rust Belt is one in a series of (hyper)videos that comprise the Legends of Michigami project.  The videos map the routes of trains along the shores of Lake Michigan.  These works trace a drama of the western Great Lakes – stories revealed in place and landscape. The persistent motion of the train is metaphoric for time passing whether we want it so or not – for the way human beings (in the name of progress or circumstance) are swept up in inevitable social and economic shifts. Riding the Rust Belt addresses the evolution of industrial cities on the shores of Lake Michigan.  It takes place in one day: a ride from Millennium Station in Chicago to Gary, Indiana.  25 miles on the ground and decades back in time.

  6. The Woman of the Crowd

This site-specific audio-walk was developed for the exhibition “The Flaneur: From Impressionism to the Present” at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Taking Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Man of the Crowd” as a starting point, it examines the topic of flanerie and presents four alternative characters from fine art and literature as female flaneuses. While listening to their stories, the participant is led through the area surrounding the museum.

“When we think of the woman in the crowd, walking among other people, does she ever turn around and look back? Suddenly having distinct features, a personality, an identity? What if she, in turn, was the flaneur, or rather the flaneuse? One that is not relegated to the periphery? One that has her own way, her own wishes and desires? Is it even possible to think of a figure that transcends this binary opposition of established gender norms?”

  7. The Great C VR

Based on the short story by American sci-fi author Philip K. Dick (The Man in the High Castle, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – the inspiration behind Blade Runner), The Great C is a cinematic virtual reality narrative set in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event. Years after a catastrophic incident, a powerful AI-driven supercomputer called the Great C rules over the remnants of humanity. Each year a nearby village is forced to send a young person on a pilgrimage to “report” to the Great C – a journey from which no one ever returns.

  9. Field of Cures

Field of Cures is a vibrant, thoughtful game that raises awareness of ethical issues in science, while also raising funds for science advocacy. It is designed as a casual puzzle game where you develop medicines by cross-breeding flowers and directing clinical-trial research. At the micro-level of gameplay, the player will learn how to manipulate a simple model of genetic inheritance to breed-specific species of medicinal plants. At the macro level, the player will have to choose between ethical and unethical research practices in conducting clinical trials to get new drugs to market. On a macro level, the player will face trade-offs between increasing profits, fostering public health, and protecting the natural biodiversity. Two NPC will give you two different progress advice. The NPC business advisor will urge the player to take such shortcuts in the name of expediency, while an NPC science advisor advocates instead for research integrity.
