  5. Literature and the Digital Society

There is no doubt today that computer science impacts strongly on literature. New forms have been created, works are abundant, and dynamic university has built a strong, specific field of research. The complexity of the field requires a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists in literature, communication, hypermedia, and the art.

Along with the development of this field, innovative educational activities to teach this literature are being developed. Thecomputer also offers powerful tools to transcribe and transmit in digital form works originally intended for other media. More generally, the relationship between computers and literature creates social benefits by offering new ways to read and write,a new "being together" around a work.

All these activities have been changing rapidly in recent years and the European workshop "Literature and Digital Society" aims to bring together researchers operating in different contexts and to federate them in a European network.

  6. The Future of Literature in an Age of Digital Media

Michael Joyce, author and professor at Vassar College, Steve Tomasula, author and professor at University of Notre Dame, and Jay David Bolter, Ian Bogost, and Maria Engberg from Digital Media/LCC spoke about how the literary arts respond and relate to an age of digital media culture. Some of the issues included:

    • What is the function of literature in a digital culture?
    • How does our immersion in digital practices affect our reading and appreciation of literary texts?
    • Has literature changed in response to a new digital aesthetic?

  9. H2PTM'05 - Create, Play Exchange: Network Experiences

This 8th edition of the H2PTM (hypermedias, hypertexts, products, tools,
methods) conference series restates the now classic themes that initiated
the first conference and since confirm its continuity. With attention to
recent developments, however, it progressively expands the thematic area
    into several directions.

Hypermedia tools are above anything else instruments of creation and it
is hypermedia where the new products and works of the digital universe
are created. The conference thus accords a large part to the problems of
product development and artistic creation. It emphasizes - among other
things - the question of the "digital author". The fast paced development
of 3D, animation, and interaction technologies stirs at the same time an
interest in video and computer games which will be part of H2PTM this
year. The conference will also tackle the question of "sharing", which
lies at the heart of network practices. Finally, it will closely examine
the notion of the digital document from the point of view of its
    creation, transmission and conservation.
