    The poem is built from one or two words at a time, sometimes appearing as plain text in a small window, usually layered over a slightly larger pop-up window with images and animation. When language appears in the image-driven windows, it does so as an image: handwritten or drawn words, or bitmapped and transformed typed words.

  2. Falling

    This visually and rhythmically enthralling piece uses a minimalist interface to create a work that resonates in its repetitions. Organized to look both as a visual piece and a code poem, it uses a simple interface to organize the language and produce multiple readings of each part. I recommend reading this poem out loud to feel the rhythm established by all the repetitions of falling in each line, starting with the page as it loads before clicking on any links. Clicking on the words in the first column trigger the display of new parts of the poem on the right hand column, parts that seem to tell stories of relationships, states of being, moods, war, and other human concerns. You may choose to read the whole thing linearly and intuit a narrative from the sequence, or you may read it texturally, occasionally including a “falling” from the central column for the sake of increasing the echoing quality of the piece and adding a layer of wordplay.

  3. The Mall as a Machine for Living

    This delightfully subversive hypertext poem is designed much like the mall it critiques. The reader browses from node to node in a linear or meandering way much like a shopper enters a mall or department store space and walks from store to store, discovering a variety of texts that hold together very nicely. The texts are sometimes about architecture, malls, cathedrals, and the Mall of America. One of the largest in the world, this giant mall in Minnesota is the focal point for a series of conceptual blends that lead the poem deep into absurdity. This is a piece that unfolds in the reader’s head as the seemingly factual information presented start to strain verosimilitude in a very semantic appropriation of prosaic language.

  4. Designer Gulch

    This generative poem explores the design world— populated by artists, models, assistants, photographers, interns, corporate clients, and others shaped by their desires for fame and profit shape their dreams. Conceptualized as a ” a never-ending epic of graphic labor” this “Taroko Gorge” remix was installed at the Berliner Technische Kunsthochschule and it is the first one to respond to user input. In this case, a motion sensor camera triggers a few lines of poetry every time a person enters the building, and displays the poem on two monitors. Interestingly enough, as the very same kinds of people featured in the poem walk in they can read about their ongoing labors, elevated to Sysiphean absurdity through permutation.

  5. The O2 Tales

    This charmingly handcrafted hypertext work is built upon the narrative framework of The Canterbury Tales, but in a completely contemporary fashion, using the Simon Cowell’s popular tv musical talent show The X Factor as the motivation for a pilgrimage to the O2 concert arena in London. The inviting hand-drawn train (reminiscent of Max Dalton’s art used in Wes Anderson’s films) uses its characters as an interface to learn about their motivations and interconnected stories. The background music consists of amateur performances of popular songs, of a quality that might give Simon Cowell abundant opportunity for a snide remark, but in this case fits the tone and aesthetics of the piece. The poem in the Prologue echoes Chaucer in its structure, but is cut from the same cloth as the music— offering lines that win readers over with enthusiasm and charm, as it does when it rhymes “telly” with “melée.” (Source: Leonardo Flores, I ♥ E-Poetry)

  6. Visual Sonnet #1

    This generative sonnet is inspired by Raymond Queneau’s Cent Mille Milliards de Poèmes but takes a highly visual approach by using images of poets, book spines, and other images. The images are cropped into strips, much like the line-pages in Queneau’s book, an ideal proportion for book spines (see a similar treatment by Jody Zellen) and the photographed eyes of iconic poets.   7. The Winter House

    This multimedia narrative shortlisted for the 2010 New Media Writing Prize combines a variety of genres and forms to tell an engaging story. This murder mystery brings the protagonist back to a mansion and boarding school to investigate her father’s untimely demise. The narrative and graphic design of this linear hypertext borrows heavily from the detective board game Clue (aka Cluedo), yet its treatment of the material using videogame interfaces, e-poetic deployment of its language, and smartly integrated multimedia keeps it from seeming cliché.   10. Dibagan

    In this collaborative poem Geniwate takes a relatively simple interface and page space designed by Stefans and makes it powerfully political. The audio recording of a reporter telling the story of surviving an RPG attack in Iraq, along with a photograph with a large drop of blood on the lens, make for a chilling backdrop for the poem. With this frame of reference set, the poem is presented as a stack of words at the base of five columns, which the reader can position by placing the mouse on the base of a column until it reaches the desired height on the screen. It takes some time to place and read the words on each column (which are readable both vertically and horizontally), which allows the looping audio clip and changing hues on the image clip to sink in for a visceral experience.
