  1. Reconfiguração do conhecimento no espaço hipermediático. Análise e avaliação de cinco arquivos digitais

    Esta dissertação é um dos resultados da participação como bolseiro de investigação no projecto "PO.EX'70-80 – Arquivo Digital da Literatura Experimental Portuguesa" e tem como pano de fundo a problemática dos arquivos digitais para conteúdos variáveis e multimodais. A partilha é hoje em dia uma palavra contestada por muitas causas, e é esse mesmo facto que está na base desta dissertação. Isto é, através da distribuição de informação e obras de arte em diversos arquivos digitais. Com essa partilha pretende-se dar a conhecer autores e formas artísticas distintas, tornando-os presentes num mundo onde a integração multimodal e a diversidade cultural parecem andar juntos, mas também caracterizado pela efemeridade das suas produções. Partindo do princípio de que os arquivos digitais são fundamentais para a preservação e divulgação de conteúdos artísticos e literários, será objectivo desta dissertação dar a conhecer esse mundo da cultura participativa, multimediático e hipertextualizado, acabando com uma visão geral sobre as formas de arquivamento que hoje em dia o meio digital torna possíveis.

  2. The story, the touchscreen and the child: how narrative apps tell stories

    Digital children’s literature is a relatively recently established field of research that has been seeking for its theoretical base and defining its position and scope. Its major attention so far has been on the narrative app, a new form of children’s literature displayed on a touchscreen computational device.

    The narrative app came into being around 2010, and immediately attracted the attention of the academics. So far, various studies have been conducted to explore its educational potential, but very few have investigated the app for what it is in its own right. To bridge the gap, this study has explored the nature of the narrative app and the essential principles of its narrative strategies.

  3. /anode a/node an/ode: Poems and an Essay on Teaching Digital Creative Writing

    This dissertation is part critical essay and part poetry collection. The critical essay, “Flipping the Script: On the Pedagogical Relevance of Teaching Digital Creative Writing,” examines the benefits of digital creative writing, i.e. text-based, literary work that requires digital technology at every stage of existence, by organizing those benefits into five categories, or nodes: poiesis, literacy, identification, authority, and cognition. Then, it argues that digital creative writing, like print creative writing, reinforces and extends the goal of liberal education, i.e. to promote creative, critical, and conscientious citizens. As students read, or interact with, and construct their own digital literary objects, they simultaneously learn to read, interact with, and construct their various selves and knowledge.   4. Reading Digital Poetry. Interface, Interaction, and Interpretation

    This study concentrates on reading digital poetry. Reading entails the act of reading, strategies of analysis, and the means of understanding. Specifically, this study constructs a model of reading and interpreting poetry in digital form by close analysis of three complex case studies. Broadly, this study concerns the aesthetic means and meanings of poetry in the contemporary moment, where new and old media are in visible negotiation with each other. In digital poetry artistic expression, digital media, technology and cultural practices clash and combine to produce new poetic forms. With new forms of poetry come new challenges to reading, analysis, and interpretation. Digital poetry presents new material, literary, technical, and rhetorical strategies and techniques that offer novel possibilities – and restrictions – for reading. Thus, my broad question is: How do we read digital poetry? This broad question is broken down to a subset of research questions. These deal with the material medium, readerly action, and the processes of the poem, which are all to be seen as constituent of its effects and meanings.

  6. Des arts-réseaux aux dérives programmées : actualité de "l'art comme expérience

    In this habilitation thesis I report on over 30 years of creative research in the visual arts. I conducted and analyzed three selected experiments to cast light on the artistic process. In a body of work entitled Paris Réseau/Network I explored the possibilities of networked art using protocols and instructions. I developed this in several stages. Originally designed as a performance, it quickly developed beyond the real-time experience to take charge of its own archives. The second chapter describes the making of Partially Buried University, an interactive 3D environment, and reflects on my implication in a collective research project involving artists, scientists and industrialists. In the third experiment, the goal was to test protocols developed by other artists. As a pedestrian, I followed the paths traced by these artists, and as cartographer I represented and situated these experiences. Finally, with a view to interpreting the “field data,” in the last chapter I outline the problems that underlie all these practices.

  7. Writing games: Collaborative Writing in Digital-Ludic Spaces

    This dissertation examines how social network site (SNS) platforms enhance writers’ experiences of pleasure and play in the process of writing together. My primary site of study is Protagonize.com, a SNS that encourages member-generated collaborative creative writing. Correlating Bakhtin’s theory of utterance, Huizinga’s understanding of play, and Wittgenstein’s concept of language games, I argue that Protagonize.com allows writers to engage in writing practices where authorship becomes inherently collaborative, context adapts to users’ needs, and the social-dimension of language emerges.

  8. Per una storia della letteratura elettronica italiana

    Poesie scritte in linguaggi di programmazione, opere multimediali interattive, storie che si sviluppano tra la realtà virtuale e quella fisica. Questi sono solo alcuni dei generi riconducibili alla “letteratura elettronica”, fenomeno intersettoriale caratterizzato dall'utilizzo creativo delle proprietà dei media digitali.

    In questo libro, il primo a tentare una ricostruzione storica della letteratura elettronica italiana, Roberta Iadevaia ci conduce in un viaggio che parte dai mainframe degli anni Cinquanta, passa per gli home e i personal computer degli anni Ottanta, si tuffa nella rete degli anni Novanta e ne segue gli sviluppi fino ai nostri giorni, caratterizzati da dispositivi sempre più “intelligenti” e onnipresenti.

    Ad accompagnarci in questo percorso – uno dei tanti possibili in un mondo ancora in larga parte da esplorare – vi è la convinzione che la letteratura elettronica, in quanto costitutivamente ibrida, possa essere uno dei fenomeni più fertili e necessari del nostro tempo.
