  1. Cybertext Poetics: The Critical Landscape of New Media Literary Theory

    Equally interested in what is and what could be, Cybertext Poetics combines ludology and cybertext theory to solve persistent problems and introduce paradigm changes in the fields of literary theory, narratology, game studies, and digital media. The book first integrates theories of print and digital literature within a more comprehensive theory capable of coming to terms with the ever-widening media varieties of literary expression, and then expands narratology far beyond its current confines resulting in multiple new possibilities for both interactive and non-interactive narratives. By focusing on a cultural mode of expression that is formally, cognitively, affectively, socially, aesthetically, ethically and rhetorically different from narratives and stories, Cybertext Poetics constructs a ludological basis for comparative game studies, shows the importance of game studies to the understanding of digital media, and argues for a plurality of transmedial ecologies.

  2. Primal Affective Ground and Digital Poetry

    Since the first symbolic scripts emerged, language has always been visual. My own work explores how language's visual can be read both as art and as poetry; how affect is amplified by sound; how generative and combinatorial layouts of text-video-sound open art from linear readings into infinite variations perspectives.
    For ELO, I am interested in creating an artist talk that utilizes content derived from two essays on digital poetry written for my comprehensive exams in the summer of 2009. The original essays are entitled: "Affecting Language: interdisciplinary explorations of emotion (new media, neuroscience, phenomenology and poetry)" and "Defining Creative Conduits: mediations on writing in digital media". Since both essays (as take-home exams) were each written over a brief 72 hour span, I look fwd to the opportunity of synthesizing and refining their argument into a presentation format.

  4. Alternative Avenues in Digital Poetics and Post-Literary Studies

    This panel explores alternative avenues for education in digital poetics and electronic literary studies. The panel pieces together problems with categorical, single discipline approaches to electronic literature, critical, cultural, and technological studies looking at the pedagogical and curricular issues associated with media-based and network forms of meaning-making, storytelling, and communication. The primary questions here are: What are the conditions under which a practitioner or scholar are considered expert in the as yet undefined field of media-based expression? And: What solutions are traditional academic institutions offering? Thinking beyond, or outside the exclusive field of electronic literature the panel examines and offers potential alternatives to traditional disciplinary scholarship and accreditation. Each panelist will offer viewpoints, curricular and structural suggestions.

  5. Slow Games, Slow Poems: The Act of Deliberation in "Slow Year"

    “Video games are actions,” declared Alexander Galloway in a manifesto that stakes out the
    essential differences between videogames and other forms of expressive culture, such as
    literature, photography, and cinema. But what about videogames in which action looks like
    inaction? What about videogames in which action means sitting still? What about a videogame
    that purports to be less a game and more a meditation—a work of literature? In this paper
    I explore a prominent yet remarkably understudied example of a slow game—a game that
    questions what counts as “action” in videogames. This game is A Slow Year (2010), designed
    for the classic Atari 2600 console by Ian Bogost. Comprised of four separate movements
    matching the four seasons, A Slow Year challenges the dominant mode of action in videogames,
    encouraging what I call “acts of deliberation.” These acts of deliberation transform the core
    mechanic of games from “action” (as Galloway would put it) into “experience”—and not just
    any experience, but the kind of experience that Walter Benjamin identifies as Erfahrung, an

  8. We have never had a mind of our own: A Poetics of the Integrated Circuit

    The black-and-gray background of the splash page for the performance artist Stelarc’s website appears to be an abstraction of memory blocks, logic boards, and input/output pads. Into it is plugged a block of small white introductory text, a blip of red text listing devices necessary to access the site, and a sketch showing a body wired with EEGs to catch the brainwaves, ECGs to trace the heartbeat, EMG’s to monitor the flexor muscles, and an array of contact microphones, position sensors, and kineto-angle transducers to chart everything else. In this integrated circuit, voltage-in probes the body; voltage-out extends it. In case the point is not yet clear, two neon-bright chunks of text in the middle of the page blink on and off to announce it: “THE BODY IS,” the first lines read all in a rush, then slowly, spelling it out, “O-B-S-O-L-E-T-E.” In this paper, I would like to argue that the transformation from an organic, industrial society to the polymorphous information system Stelac enacts allows us to think back to machine-human collaborations overlooked in expressivist approaches to poetry.

  10. A New Media Reading Strategy

    This dissertation addresses the need for a strategy that will help readers new to new media texts interpret such texts. While scholars in multimodal and new media theory posit rubrics that offer ways to understand how designers use the materialities and media found in overtly designed, new media texts (see, e.g,, Wysocki, 2004a), these strategies do not account for how readers have to make meaning from those texts. In this dissertation, I discuss how these theories, such as Lev Manovich’s (2001) five principles for determining the new media potential of texts and Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s (2001) four strata of designing multimodal texts, are inadequate to the job of helping readers understand new media from a rhetorical perspective. I also explore how literary theory, specifically Wolfgang Iser’s (1978) description of acts of interpretation, can help audiences understand why readers are often unable to interpret the multiple, unexpected modes of communication used in new media texts.
