  1. Lusca Mourns The Telegraph | In Search of Lost Messages

    This project is an app that re-imagines a sea monster who communicates as or via an app. Lusca, is an ancient sea monster, who once thrived upon the telegram messages that were sent using the telegraph cable system. Back in the day, when she first noticed the cable structures being built, they were of no interest. Then, as the system came to life, the various noises aroused her curiosity. Sometime around 1877, after numerous tentative approaches to this unknown creature, she figures out how to latch onto to the structure, and manages to extract a transmission or two. The messages she steals fill her with new feelings. She grows strong. Her consciousness evolves. Sometime around the turn of the 21st century the volume of messaging drops. She sees the disrepair, the rust. She grows hungry. She is dying. She needs those messages. You can help. The app invites users to submit new messages in order to keep Lusca from losing consciousness. She then releases stolen messages of the past in order to absorb those of the present. Lusca might still be monitoring the airwaves.

Players race through neighborhoods to trace the history of riots, protests, and other political episodes in the history of New York City. Teams pit themselves against the clock and test their puzzle-solving skills to locate important sites representing acts of civic engagement and struggles for greater social justice. Activated by text messages from Re:Activism Central, teams reaching target locations respond to site-specific challenges that reinforce the historical content. Players must also activate strategic thinking by choosing to focus on racing or puzzle-solving, or a combination of both, to win points and become the most-active activists to win the game. Re:Activism was initially developed for, and first played during, the Spring 2008 Come Out And Play Festival. VAS: An Opera in Flatland is the story of Square’s decision to undergo an operation that will leave him sterile for the good of his wife, Circle, for the good of their daughter, Oval, and for the good of society, including the unborn descendants he will never have. VAS is, in other words, the story of finding one’s identity within the double-helix of language and lineage—and Square’s struggle to see beyond the common pages of ordinary, daily life upon which he is drawn.

    The initial idea of The Cosmonaut came from a suggestion that we work on the story of Ed Aldrin, bringing it to the digital environment. Of course, the philosophical or anthropological record did not seduce us in any way, but the possibility of fictionalizing a history of religious conversion (or reconversion). On the surface, what is known of this episode is that Aldrin, having remained alone in the Lunar Module while Neil Armstrong made his historic walk ( a small step for a man, a great leap for mankind ...), had a kind of religious epiphany. From there, he became (or came to be) a convicted Christian. On top of that, we proposed to change the location of the epiphany, which became a spacecraft in outer space, orbiting the Moon. The astronaut, on the other hand, would be a cosmonaut because of the etymological implications of this term

    Author description: In this interactive short story, author Aaron A. Reed explores what storytelling meant to the earliest civilizations and what it will mean in the 21st century. The player takes the role of a villager thousands of years ago whose people have gathered to hear their storyteller tell part of the epic of Gilgamesh. As the player traverses the mostly linear plot, he or she accumulates a history based on decisions both important and trivial that ultimately impact the outcome and significance of the frame story. Hypertext-like keywords allow the player to raise points in the interior story, persuading the crowd and other characters to corresponding points of view, while a more robust interactive fiction parser allows the player to interact extensively with the frame story.

  8. Arriving Simultaneously on Multiple Far-Flung Systems

    Beginning with punch cards, an IBM1130 computer, FORTRAN, and space exploration in the late 1960’s, Arriving Simultaneously on Multiple Far-Flung Systems is a virtual reading machine, created/recreated with JavaScript in a HTML/CSS structure and read “on-the-fly”. With a complex array of randomly-generated texts, the work mirrors the life of Diana, an early aerospace information retrieval programmer, who later worked to bring community networking to rural and urban areas. The gap between the acceptance of women programmers who worked — not only during WWII but also in the decades after WII — and the current dominance of men in the field, is core to this narrative of one woman’s journey through an environment of changing technologies.

    The Winnipeg: The Poem that Crossed the Atlantic consists of a website with information about these interdisciplinary research project and the poetic space of “The Poem that Crossed the Atlantic”; an interactive, multilinguistic transatlantic sea of stories fed by the uploaded posts gathered in the website. The main inspiration has been a personal story rooted in historical events of the Spanish Civil War and the Spanish and Chilean Historical Memory, due to the involvement of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in the evacuation and rescue of 2,200 Spanish civil war exiles from French concentration camps. The author worked with Alexandre Dupuis-Belin as creative programmer.

    High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese is an interactive poem, created through an interdisciplinary collaboration of 11 Canadian artists, programmers and community members. The project consists of an interactive website, 8 videos and an interactive gallery installation. 

    High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese explores the theme of Chinese immigration to the west coast of Canada – both historical and contemporary – the tensions that exist in and between these narratives.
