    This interactive video poem highlights the use of collage that is so central to Web work that one of the first Web browsers was called Mosaic. This artistic technique builds a whole out of parts, much like a Web browser assembles a coherent display document out of different kinds of electronic objects, often in different locations on a network. Formats like Flash or Quicktime produce an illusion of unity by mixing together multiple elements and packaging them for export as a single proprietary file.

  2. How I Heard It

    This aural poem about a speaker’s perception of a bar fight is arranged on a visually minimalist interface that allows readers to experience both the chaos of the event and the calm recollection of it afterwards. Each circle (or is it the letter O?) contains two areas that respond to mouseovers. The circumference triggers the playback of a recorded line of speech that tells a piece of the story. The center triggers a loud diegetic sound that takes the narrative beyond being a language constructed event to something that feels real. You can trigger more than one sound clip simultaneously, by the way, and if you move your mouse pointer rapidly over the whole piece, you can create a truly chaotic mess of sound and information— perhaps like the experience of a bar fight.

  3. In the Footsteps of the Father

    This hypertext poem gives a voice to Jesus as he questions the narrative path he is in and decides not to follow in it. The central metaphorical motif in this poem— to follow in someone’s footsteps (in this case in the father)— has particularly powerful resonance when applied to Jesus and Jehovah. For Jesus to follow in his father’s footsteps is to become a god through painful self-sacrifice, but in this poem, Jesus seeks to make his own path as a human being.

  4. Aufschreibesysteme Green ghost echo

    This piece is one of those rare examples of e-poems that exhibits the same textual behaviors as a print text— purely static— yet is created through such a creative engagement with the medium that it merits consideration as e-literature. Its visual design is evocative of both programming conventions (particularly the practice of numbering lines of code) and of green monochrome monitors. The numbering of its lines and stanzas, with two notable exceptions, obey a simple formal logic yet add programming texture and structure to the poem. The cluster of 10 lines beginning with “x01,” each of which is divided into four columns breaks the numbering pattern, simultaneously offering a visual structure that could be read as lines or columns. This is framed by two identically numbered 2-line stanzas (010801 & 010802) which contain different texts but are formatted on left and right hand margins of the window.

  5. Weave

    This hypermediated hypertext suite of poems make excessive use of background images, animated GIFs, and messily redundant code to render them deliciously unreadable and inviting. Bell weaves a dense mesh of lines, background images, and code to produce surfaces that are difficult to read at times, making us wonder if he’s aiming for felt rather than the finely stitched fabric of verse. Bell’s lines are witty and full of wordplay, non-repetitive reiterations, alliteration, and an inviting awareness of his strategies and questions. Follow the links to discover many other poems, in some of which he has the design audacity of using animated GIFs as background images.

  6. Four Letter Words

    This combinatorial poem uses random words arranged on a grid changing in seemingly random at different time intervals. The word in the center of the grid distinguishes itself, not only by position, but by its slight overlap with the word that is to replace it. This film technique known as a dissolve adds a layer of depth to the transition by having a 10th word juxtaposed (superposed, really) and by visually representing the time-based mechanism in the poem. The title plays with a double meaning: words that are culturally considered obscene or insulting, and with a constraint of using words with only four letters (see this Scrabble dictionary). Knoebel seems to be foregrounding the latter, thought initially the title points towards the former meaning.

  7. More Real than Now

    This video poem is built from a dual juxtaposition of language and image and an image with itself. A steady stream of language scrolls horizontally on the screen in a manner suggestive of a news ticker providing a prose poem that uses grammar and the window size to offer a sense of the line. This creates a disconnection between the line we read now and the one we read a few seconds or a minute from now: it is the same line, but we are witnessing a different portion of it. The way the work handles the images is similar. The window displays a portion of the image, and then moves (or does the image move?) so the reader can see different parts of the photograph. Interestingly enough, a semi-transparent snapshot of the original view moves along with the window, emphasizing the disconnection between the initial and current perception of the piece.

  8. Random Paths

    This hypertext poem is structured linearly, yet it offers a couple of forks in the road which can sometimes lead to endless delay. Based on a holiday in Rome, the speaker’s sends her wandering eye and inquisitive mind through the city combining text and thematically related images in each node. The first node triggers a popup window titled “Rome_index” which provides a 6 x 5 grid of thumbnail images that respond to mouseovers, bringing up new images of Rome. This sensitive surface allows readers to perform a psychogeographic exploration of Rome as perceived by the speaker’s photographic eye. The circular linearity of the poem allows you to experience it multiple times, each time observing new snippets of this ancient city to juxtapose with the poem’s lyric voice. Note: This poem is best read in Internet Explorer because it uses older JavaScript codes to create pop-up windows in a way that other contemporary browsers have difficulty understanding.     This multimedia poem is an assault on the senses— visually, kinetically, and aurally— it bombards the reader with so much information, color, sound, and stimulus that it is difficult to process, much less read. The text is handwritten and moves, spins, changes around some boxes the reader can manipulate, moving each whirling cluster to a spot in the window where it might be legible. The music, noise, and speech loop loudly but barely understandably, much like the handwritten text. Even in the menu page the typed text is so skewed that it is barely legible.

  10. Web Warp & Weft

    Web Warp & Weft was created with the support of East Midlands Arts and the backing of the trAce Online Writing Centre at Nottingham Trent University.

    This project aimed to explore the ways in which women and men have woven their own stories with yarn and thread, with rugs and quilts and textiles. The website was designed to thread the ideas together and work the threads [stories] into a hypertext with pictures, sound and animation, to create a bigger picture, an overall story.

    The project was based in Nottingham, which has a particularly notable history of textile creation, including frame-knitting, lacemaking, and more contemporary manufacturing processes.
