  3. Operatus

Operatus is a live performance of a generative narrative-poetic system distributed between screens, interactive objects and augmented reality overlays. The work engages a range of historical and contemporary contexts of observation and forensic analysis including early modern surgical theaters, the deductive logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and The Stud File, a methodical archive of personal evidence documenting the sexual exploits of Samuel Steward, a 20th century tattoo artist, pornographer, and friend of Gertrude Stein. 6. #4artforfreedom

In “#4artforfreedom” I sustain a mode of writing I began in 2007: exploring possibilities in creating anagrammatic digital poetry in multimedia contexts—now with the added feature of enabling multiple sonic possibilities. Works like this represent my own way of seeing language and imagery (in poetic texts) as a sustainable, or at least self-sustaining, self-supported form. For “Art for Freedom” I was thinking about gender equity, and the need—from Confucius, who I revise, onward—to demand parity. My presentation reflects and oscillates between the physical strength of everyone, visualizing a sensibility that bestows power to all. I render a plain yet artful visual aesthetic in order to support an unconventional and inventive constraint-based verse.

  7. The Montaigne Machine

The Montaigne Machine is a work of electronic literature that invites users to participate in the creation of multimedia personal essays. The essays generated by The Montaigne Machine each center on a specific topic taken up by the inventor of the genre, Michel de Montaigne. The essays combine text from Montaigne’s famous Essais, first published in 1580 and here translated into English, with original text from each visitor who uses the machine. These texts are placed within an image that has been uploaded by a photographer on Flickr, designated as available for remixing, and most recently tagged with a term appropriate to the essay’s topic. The resulting essay is a collaboration, perhaps even a conversation, across time and media by three artists.

  8. Anacrón: Hipótesis de un Producto Todo

Anacrón, Hipótesis de un producto todo is the vertiginous text that calls to the dead and the imagination. Both the subjects are attached to Mexican culture since ancient times and more than ever in our actual global society. Anacrón is an eclectic aesthetic e-poem that aims to respect the linear textual reading of the poem while it explores the boundaries of collaboration, multimedia and video game. Gabriel, the poet, and Augusto, the bandit. The entire project has developed without meeting each other. All communication has been done by e-mail. The journey starts when Augusto found an abandoned book called Caja over a couch in a Cafe at Puebla city. Of course, he stole both: the coffee and the book.

  9. Objective Poet

Objective Poet is a multimedia object that consists of a computer modelled kinetic sculpture in the shape of modified cube accompanied by sound design, reflecting its microclimate. We plan to install the Objective Poet in a public space where people talk a lot: on a central square, in a cafeteria, etc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A sound capturing device is going to be attached to the artefact to collect the verbal interactions of the passersby in the close proximity. Analyzed using Maximus P modules, the sounds of these conversations will be converted into a sound poem. The text will be vocalized or transmitted in a multichannel configuration.

  10. Fish Net Stockings

Fish Net Stockings is a new multimedia installation project in development and is inspired and informed by historical mermaid legends and their myriad literary variants. One discovers mermaid tales clinging like barnacles onto historic seaports, sharing themes of the cross-cultural outsider, human trafficking, economic injustice, environmental imbalance, and gender inequality. Both cautionary and emboldening, mermaid tales inhabit the blurred boundary between childhood longing and adulthood regret. In variants of the little mermaid tale, we find a story of the passage between worlds. Den lille havfrue, Hans Christian Andersen’s sacrificial rite-of-passage story screams out for alternative endings. Instead of silencing the little mermaid, Fish Net Stockings aims to give e-literature sirens a space to speak up, sing out, and hook on their stockings. In the installation, a back projection screen serves as canvas for a richly layered mix of digital video, text, and silhouettes. The participatory space allows the audience to disrupt, subvert, and make virtual waves inside this new version of an old tale.
