  2. Matter of Time: Toward a Materialist Semiotics of Web Animation

    This essay argues for greater critical attention to the impact of particular development environments and programming languages on the aesthetic forms of new media productions. Examining two examples of Internet-based motion graphics for the ways they have been optimized for web delivery, the author attempts to show that medium-specific coding and design strategies in digital literature set up another signifying surface that intersects with the manifest text on the screen. In this material dimension of the text's signification, we can read the marks of the small- and large-scale technical systems in which the artwork is embedded.

  3. Le récit littéraire interactif. Narrativité et interactivité

    The expression interactive literary narrative applies to a variety of works. In its diversity, the
    interactive literary narrative raises questions on narratives, interactive architecture, multimedia as
    well as on literature. It is because the interactive literary narrative is wrought by tensions that it has
    this questioning and maybe even revealing capacity. This tension is first and foremost that which lies between narrativity and interactivity and which investigates other connections or tensions :
    - with regards to the narrative, the tension between adherence and distance can be characterized by a play on fictionalization and reflexivity;
    - with regards to the interactive architecture, the tension between assistance and control roles can
    manifest itself by a play on loss of grasp,
    - with regards to the multimedia, the tension between a text-based narrative and a multimedia
    narrative can be reached by work on text as a dynamic and polysemiotic object, and also the
    theatralization of interactive objects endowed with behaviour,

  4. Reading and Teaching Gender Issues in Electronic Literature and New Media Art

    This dissertation has as its object of research new feminist hypermedia and it is located in the fields of hypertext theory, gender studies, and semiotics. This work offers close-readings of three recent feminist hypertext fictions written in English language exploring the problematics of gender, sexuality and multiple identities: Dollspace (1997-2001) by Francesca da Rimini, Brandon (1998) by Shu Lea Cheang and Blueberries (2009) by Susan Gibb. The aim of the study is, in the first place, show how feminist hypertext fictions can be analysed: categorising the work, interpreting its nodes and lexias, emphasizing the cultural references it evokes and studying the readers’ reactions to the hypertext. And in the second place, promote the study of electronic literature as a useful tool for literature courses as well as to demonstrate the beneficial aspects of hypertexts to work with gender studies literature.

  5. The Materiality of the Intangible: Literary Metaphor in Multimodal Texts

    The materiality of fiction narratives is, ironically, a rather intangible concept, particularly as the notion of materiality traditionally relates to specifically tangible tools of creation — such as the painter’s brush or the sculptor’s clay. The materiality of digital artifacts lies only superficially in the haptic hardware of screens, keyboards, and mice; the materiality of modes, navigation, and interaction must also be explored for their effects on metaphor and meaning. Bouchardon & Heckman identify three levels of materiality in digital literary works: the figure of a semiotic form, the grasp required to physically interact with the work, and the memory of the work — its whole compiled from the parts of code, hardware, and user/reader experience that form meaning (2012, n.p.). In presenting her theory of the technotext, however, Katherine Hayles argues that it is the conjunction of the physical embodiment of technotexts (whether semi-tangible in digital form, or as fully physical as a book) with their embedded verbal signifiers that constructs both plurimodal meaning and an implicit construct of the user/reader (2002, 130-1).

  6. Editing Electronic Literature in the Global Publishing System

    Contemporary “format disruptions” (Savikas) lead to a new experience and practice of scholarly publishing: it is global, virtual, and instantaneous. How does this apply to electronic literature? Elit works exist in a field of publication, characterized by circulation, commentary, and archiving. They are subject to complex corporate toolchains, software updates, social media, etc. The work is no longer just the work but the entirety of this field. Publication is no longer a single event or a single thing. Think of this in terms of Luhmann’s systems theory: the differentiating distinction between artistic production and critical discourse is shifted; the difference made by artwork - its “poetics” - is now systematically linked to critical discourse.

  7. “Som å lese en film”: Elevers lesing av elektronisk litteratur

    «Like Reading a Movie»: Students' Reading of Electronic Literature This thesis is an empirical investigation of students' reading of electronic literature. The main goal has been to study the skills required to get the most out of this kind of literature. Theoretical approaches include reader-oriented theories, where Jonathan Cullen and his concept of literary competence creates an overall basis, and media-specific theories, particularly parts of the multimodal theory derived from a social semiotic perspective. The theoretical framework also includes perspectives from researchers who have written about e- literary competence. The empirical evidence has been collected through qualitative research interviews with five 17-year-old students attending the branch of general studies performed after lessons. The students read episode 1 and 3 of Inanimate Alice by Kate Pullinger and Chris Joseph, and part 1 and 2 of Nightingale's Playground by Andy Campbell and Judi Alston. The theme of the interviews focused on how the respondents perceived these texts, and to what extent they benefited from them. The fact that the survey is carried out in a school context, is emphasized in the thesis.

  8. Reader/Readers

    The paper will present a percepto-cognitive theory of e-poetry. This theory uses a non-ontologic approach of literature in which the concept of "text" cannot be defined independendly from the mind representation for the system. This conception, named "theorie du texte lié à une profondeur" (theory of text linked to a deep) will be present. In this theory, the main concepts are the mind representation of the system, named the "profondeur de dispositif" (system-deep), and the set of elements which can be perceived as a classical text. This set is named the "texte-à-voir" (text-to-be-seen). The system-deep which seems to govern the real behaviour of the system in e-literature is named the procedural archetype. The paper will present the main caracteristic features of it, specially the particular position of the reader. The most important features relative to the reading are the "double reading" and the "aesthetics of frustration": to construct the sense of a work, the reader "has to read his reading", even if the work is non-interactive. This particularity is named "double reading".

  9. Approche du rôle de la mémoire dans la conception et la réception de quelques oeuvres en littérature numérique

    L'article analyse dans un premier temps l'impact sémiotique du souvenir et de l'oubli dans l'opération de lecture d'un hypermédia narratif. Il le fait en analysant des réactions de lecture. On constate que deux mécanismes contraires entrent en jeu : l'implication de la lecture comme signe au sein de l'œuvre, opération qui mobilise la mémoire, et un déploiement hypertextuel de l'information qui, lui, favorise l'oubli. Ces exemples montrent également l'importance du cognitif et du perceptif dans le phénomène d'interprétation. L'article propose alors un modèle sémiotiquo-cognitif de texte, dit « du texte lié » dans lequel ce qui est considéré comme texte est assujetti aux archétypes mis en œuvre par le sujet pour appréhender le dispositif de l'œuvre, y compris dans ces dimensions technologiques et communicationnelles.

  10. Analyzing Digital Fiction

    Analyzing Digital Fiction offers a collection of pioneering analyses based on replicable methodological frameworks. It offers analyses of digital works that have so far received little or no analytical attention and profiles replicable methodologies which can be used in the analyses of other digital fictions. Chapters include analyses of hypertext fiction, Flash fiction, Twitter fiction and videogames with approaches taken from narratology, stylistics, semiotics and ludology. Essays propose ways in which digital environments can expand, challenge and test the limits of literary theories which have, until recently, predominantly been based on models and analyses of print texts.
