  1. Computer Poetry

    Silvestre Pestana programmed in BASIC, first for a Sinclair ZX-81 and ZX-82, and then, already with chromatic lighting, for a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, three poems respectively dedicated to Henri Chopin, E. M. de Melo e Castro and Julian Beck, which resulted in the Computer Poetry (1981-83) series. Pestana, a visual artist, writer and performer – who had returned from the exile in Sweden after Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 – brought diverse influences put forward with photography, video, performance, and computer media. From his creative production, it should be emphasized the iconic conceptual piece Povo Novo [New People] (1975), which was remediated by the author himself in the referred series of kinetic visual poems, or “infopoems” (Melo e Castro 1988: 57).

    Gra stanowi propozycję innej metodologii lektury: czytania jako niszczenia. Przy pomocy garści poręcznych wulgaryzmów czytelnik postawiony jest przed radosną koniecznością rozmontowywania monumentalnych tekstów kultury. Przeniesienie mechaniki Angry Birds do sfery tekstu jest drogą do nirwany. Projekt bezdyskusyjnie zwyciężył w konkursie na utwór nowomedialny ogłoszonym przez Korporację Ha!art w 2012 roku.

  4. Roda Lume

    When I began using video technology to produce my first videopoem, Roda Lume (Wheel of Fire), in 1968, I did not know where the limits were and where my experiments would take me. I was really experimenting on the most elementary meaning of the word experience. A sense of fascination and adventure told me that the letters and the signs standing still on the page could gain actual movement of their own. The words and the letters could at last be free, creating their own space.

  5. Signagens

    Signagens (Signings) is a series of videopoems (1985-89) developed by E.M. de Melo e Castro with the support of the Portuguese Institute for Distance Learning (IPED) and later by the Open University of Lisbon, in its electronic and digital TV studios. According to Melo e Castro, "this project intended first of all to investigate video possibilities as a new medium for reading poetry. It was meant to be used in classes of literature and of Portuguese language. Very soon I realized that intersemiotic translation of print-based visual and experimental poems was obvious, as video seemed to me a perfect medium for animation of letters and words."   6. Mrs. Wobbles and the Tangerine House: The Mysterious Floor

    Mrs. Wobbles & the Tangerine House is an interactive story about a mysterious foster home, taking in children who need her special kind of magical love. "The Mysterious Floor" is the first story in this collection. Mrs. Wobbles and the Tangerine House was written by Mark C. Marino in collaboration with his two children, his daughter (age 10) and his son (age 8) with art by Brian Gallagher. The piece was built on the Undum platform.

  7. The Tower of Jezik

    Initiated during the 2014 Erasmus intensive program in Digital Literatures, The Tower of Jezik is a hyperfiction intended for teenagers that primarily questions language and its possible inefficiency. Set in an imaginary world which calls medieval times to mind, the reader follows a young boy chasing his cat over the rooftops of his small village. Through a window, the boy sees an old man brewing something in a cauldron and believes he is in fact a wizard about to cast a spell. The old man sees him spying and the boy falls from the window, hits his head and loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he can no longer understand what people are saying and, convinced that the villagers were indeed cursed by a powerful sorcerer, he sets out to find the mythical Tower of Jezik and bring language back to his people. The prototype for Tower of Jezik was originally developed in HTML to be read in web browsers. However, it is currently being remediated in ePub 3 by Émilie Barbier, as part of the Textualités Augmentées workshop at Paris 8 University.

  8. Tavs

    This manga-inspired graphic novel app is about thirteen-year-old Tavs, who chooses his name (meaning “silent”) when he writes a declaration to his parents: “From now on I will be silent”. The story is about the loneliness and loss Tavs feels upon the death of his twin and his family’s move to Tokyo. TAVS is a fantasy narrative with gothic, humorous and boy-meets-girl elements and references to haiku and manga. The app mixes text, music, still images, sound effects and animation into an immersive aesthetic experience. For example, as we read of Tavs’ sorrow and frustration the words begin to fall down from the screen and the reader has to take an active part in the reading process by grabbing the sentences. The chapters show great variation, operating between expressive powerful animations and stills and black pages, between strong sound effects and silence and between spoken and written words, right up to the final fight between the twins; between life and death.   9. Curlew

    Curlew is an interactive, multimedia poem about one man's encounter with the forces of nature. The narrative centers on Catsinas, a fisherman living alone in a makeshift shack on Curlew, one of several barrier islands in the Gulf Coast known as the Chandeleurs. Based on a true account, the story chronicles the man's futile attempt to save Curlew's shoreline to a storm's destruction of his adopted home.

  10. House of Trust

    House of Trust is a generative poem that addresses issues of information access and control in the 21st century. It proposes that free libraries are houses of trust. At the same time, it brings up images of redaction and censorship as well as broaching many concerns about the technical developments associated with information sharing. House of Trust consciously positions itself in a tradition of e-literary work: it is based on Alison Knowles and James Tenney’s A House of Dust (1967), generally considered to be the first computer-generated poem, which had its beginnings at an informal Fluxus seminar in which Tenney demonstrated how the Fortran language could be employed in chance operations in artmaking.
