  1. Cruising

    On one level, Cruising is an excited oral recitation of a teenager's favorite pastime in small town Wisconsin, racing up and down the main drag of Main Street looking to make connections, wanting love. But by merging the linear aspect of the sound recording with an interactive component that demands a degree of control, Cruising reinforces the spatial and temporal themes of the poem by requiring the user to learn how to “drive” the text. A new user must first struggle with gaining control of the speed, the direction, and the scale in order to follow the textual path of the narrative. When the text on the screen and the spoken words are made to coincide, the rush of the image sequence is reduced to a slow ongoing loop of still frames. The viewer moves between reading text and experiencing a filmic flow of images — but cannot exactly have both at the same time. In this way, the work seeks to highlight the materiality of text, film, and interface.

    The author quotes Jim Andrews's description: "Strings is a playful series of Flash pieces about relationships. It also raises questions about the presence/absence of the hand in this medium. Visual artists often criticise the lack of presence of the hand in digital art. In Strings, the hand is and is not present, is transformed, is transforming, is writing, is written, coded.   3. Egypt: The Book of Going Forth by Day

    Egypt: The Book of Going Forth by Day is a contemporary/ancient narrative of death and rebirth on the Nile.  It is an account of Egypt that draws upon history, geography, hieroglyphics, legend and myth to tell a contemporary story of a woman searching for her brother that mirrors the eternal story of the ancient Egyptian spiritual journey.  It explores the interface between image and text - the ways, in hypermedia, that narrative information is not only contained in the text, but also coded into graphics, sound, structure, and navigational elements. Egypt celebrates the natural materiality of both hieroglyphic writing and electronic literature. Egyptian hieroglyphic writing is inherently hypertextual and hypermedial. In ancient times, the surfaces of temples, coffins, and tombs were covered with a narrative writing/art that was a complex linkage of the literal, metaphorical, and schematic aspects of the central spiritual ideas of the culture.

  4. Marble Springs 1.0

    Marble Springs, a complex and lyrical new work in the tradition of Spoon River Anthology and Winesburg, Ohio, explores the lives of the women who built the American West. Marble Springs invites the reader to explore a collection of poems discovered in the ruins of a church in an abandoned ghost town. The poems, like the lives of so many 19th century women, are anonymous, enticing the reader to discover the identity of the author hidden between the lines.   5. Shy Boy

    Shy Boy is a Flash poem that uses movement, visual images, and sound to deep into the soul and life of one very shy boy. The monochromatic use of black, gray, and white suggest a child who calls no attention to himself and the vanishing text, his own lack of presence among his schoolyard peers.

  6. P.o.E.M.M.

    A compilation of broken poems, P.o.E.M.M. Poems for Excitable [Mobile] Media is designed explicitly for mobile media. The poems cannot be read without touching the screen, an experience that creates excitable stimulation. The letters and words of the poems float in the background, waiting for the user to snatch them up with their fingers. One line at a time, the user can grab the words and align them on the screen. The lines can be arranged in any order, and so the user must piece together both their meaning and the structure. Lewis and Nadeau built the interface filled by these works and poets: “What They Speak When They Speak to Me” by Jason E. Lewis, “Character” by Jim Andrews, “Let Me Tell You What Happened This Week” by David Jhave Johnston, “Muddy Mouth” by JR Carpenter, “The Color of Your Hair Is Dangerous” by Aya Karpinska.   7. The Carrier

    The Carrier is the first digital graphic novel meant to be viewed exclusively on the iPhone. The novel utilizes many of the features the phone has to offer such as the touch interface, web links to extra story input, and geolocation. Also unique to the work is the way in which the story unfolds: It is given to the user in real time. Like 19th-century novels and 20th-century comic books, The Carrier is distributed serially. Release of each chapter is timed to specific intervals that correlate to the hero's experience of time within the story. Story premise: a scientist wakes up in Bangkok with no memories and a briefcase chained to his wrist. As the scientist moves across the world, ancillary elements of his story are texted and emailed to the reader: recipes for Thai food, London weather reports, fake news headlines and the like.     Spine Sonnet” (the app) is an automatic poem generator in the tradition of found poetry that randomly composes 14 line sonnets derived from an archive of over 2500 art and architectural theory and criticism book titles.

    “Spine Sonnet” (the website) combines images of scanned book spines into stacks of 14 titles. Each time you refresh the browser you get a new combination.

  10. Between Page and Screen

    Coupling the physicality of the printed page with the electric liquidity of the computer screen, Between Page and Screen chronicles a love affair between the characters P and S while taking the reader into a wondrous, augmented reality. The book has no words, only inscrutable black and white geometric patterns that—when seen by a computer webcam—conjure the written word. Reflected on screen, the reader sees himself with open book in hand, language springing alive and shape-shifting with each turn of the page. The story unfolds through a playful and cryptic exchange of letters between P and S as they struggle to define their turbulent relationship. Rich with innuendo, anagrams, etymological and sonic affinities between words, Between Page and Screen takes an almost ecstatic pleasure in language and the act of reading. Merging concrete poetry with conceptual art, “technotext” with epistolary romance, and the tradition of the artist’s book with the digital future, Between Page and Screen expands the possibilities of what a book can be.
