    The Composition installation turns live video of participants in an installation space into imagery completely composed of text. Participants in the installation interact with a live projected version of themselves where a real-time video image of themselves is literally ‘composed’ out of text characters. Composition examines how areas of an image can carry multiple weights—their symbolic value as text characters, and their light or dark value as part of the overall composition.

  2. Drawing from Life

    The Drawing from Life installation was developed as a commission for the ‘Genomic Revolution’ show at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The exhibit opened in May 2001 and ran through January 1, 2002. In this piece viewers see a live video of themselves composed completely from the letters ‘ATGC’—the letters symbolizing the 4 proteins of DNA. This piece appears in the last room of the exhibit on the human genome and helps raise questions for visitors ‘am I more than my DNA’? ‘Does my DNA define me?’ The light or dark value of each letter is determined by the light or dark value in the incoming video, but the characters themselves change randomly—hinting at the vitality and chaos of life itself.

  5. Narrative Units

    Narrative Units" is a networked visualization based on the gutenberg.org archive, information theory, and video. 
     

    Artist Statement

    The Narrative Units project addresses a number of questions by interconnecting several systems of interest. Information Theory, which strictly concerns itself with the encoding and transmission of data, is displaced into the context of a literary narrative. This framing serves to evoke question surrounding the dispersion of Information Theory and other paradigms of first-wave cybernetics into contemporary culture. 

    The source text, narratives from Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/), are treated as a message source. In terms of the Narrative Units system, the text displayed in white is noise. The system matches a particular string of symbols which correspond to a set of definitions from an introductory text on Information Theory. Matching words are displayed in red, and placed in one of the lower panels of the visualization.

    Kodachrome Blue Syntax" is a digital composition that explores how a sense of one's past is represented and re-inflected through a montage of archival film clips and a chorus of looping, poetic voices transcoded across multiple media formats.

  8. Developing: the Idea of Home

    If, as Henri Lefebvre asserted, "spatial thinking" involves several different ways of conceptualizing space-as idea, as lived, as imagined-then perhaps an open system of examples can generate new ideas about "home" in the future. This is an experiment in reading; the CD-ROM is organized in an associative manner, since the subject radiates in so many different directions. There is obviously a "direction" here, that is no hidden-but the user may peruse and reconnect the fabric of the piece in many different ways. And, if our habitat may be located within a given social order, defined by economics, culture, and history, these forces must be viewed as interacting, rather than fixed.

  9. hektor

     hektor is one of the main characters in the non-aggressive narrative - a mode of Benjaminian storytelling. The NAN proposes the "continuation of a story which is just unfolding." I use digital and traditional media to create encounters between an ambiguous 'I' and potential 'You.' By embracing memory as a collage in motion through multiple characters, the NAN implies an origin story that may or may not have occurred. You are invited to co-invent this unfolding 'past,' and its openness suggests possibility and multiplicity. In a 1965 interview with Michael Kirby, John Cage said that theatre is not done to its viewers; they do it to themselves.

  10. Post Modern Object

    Post Modern Object attempts to explore the idea of the post modern utilizing technology which has been built and modeled in the wake of post modernity. Due the form in which it was conceived, the web has capabilities uniquely suited to presenting material on the subject. "Objective: Towards a new experience: Not a critical work, not a music video, not a novel, not a video game, but something from all. Utilizing multiple and ever more complex interfaces (ways of accessing the information), the user is invited to experience the chosen selections. Not only has the author died, but so has the author's pattern: What remains? A collection of narrative morphemes, quotations, images (textual and visual, titles, themes, character descriptions/identities, and critical analyses).

    "This work attempts to engage with the process of structure: In this case, the structure of an academic text."
