    Golem was a two channel video installation where the two monitors were arranged like the pages of an open book. The imagery was derived from medieval illuminated books so the overall effect was of an electronically illuminated manuscript. The work took as its theme the ancient Jewish myth of the Golem, a human-like creature created to do the bidding of its creator, the genesis of the Frankenstein story. The work deals with the issues around contemporary technologies such as genetics and Artificial Intelligence.

  2. Presence

    interactive immersive installation with responsive language system

    Presence is a three beam interactive video projection installation commissioned for the Art Machine II exhibition at the Maclellan Galleries, Glasgow. It is composed of three screens using high resolution video projectors and three computers with a remote visual sensing system for viewer interaction. On the main screen are visible a number of actors who are individually interactive with the audience and with each other. Another screen features an enormous upside down shadow, whilst another is composed of a giant talking mouth. The piece uses object oriented and behavioural programming techniques.

  3. Halo

    Halo is composed of four interactive video projections using very powerful high resolution video projectors and four computers with an infra-red remote visual sensing system for viewer interaction. On each screen is visible a number of figures. Each figure is individually interactive, with the audience and with each other. The piece uses object oriented and behavioural programming techniques.

    Each figure is individually interactive and the viewer is fully modelled within the interactive system. A gravity well forms around each viewer, attracting flying figures into their orbit. When the viewer approaches the screen the figures are 'pulled' down to earth, where instead of flying they walk in direct interaction with the viewer. A number of interactive texts using generative grammars, based on the textual works of William Blake, are visible on each screen.

  4. Stream

    Stream deals with issues concerning presence, both physical and remote (virtual), and asks "what if" we all lost the ability to differentiate ourselves and our sense of singularity in the world? What would it be like if we could all see what everybody else can see, from their point of view, and how would we perceive ourselves to "be" as a "stream of conciousness" amongst all the other "streams"? The title also evokes other connotations of the word "stream", such as streaming (downloading) data over the web and the temporality of streams of water and such-like.

  5. reWrite

    interactive language based installation

    The focus of an artwork such as reWrite is identity. The work addresses this theme through the use of interactive systems, where the relationship between the viewer and the artwork is explicit and active. This act of interaction functions to raise questions concerning being and, through the process of communication, the linguistic foundations of identity.

    Language artworks, such as reWrite, map an exploration of the manner in which this dynamic of differentiation through reading/writing can be disturbed and opened up as a conscious process. The primary element in this strategy has been the use of auto-generative texts, where the text appears correctly written and to be concerned with a particular subject but where there has been no authorial role other than the processes of a mechanised writing. The intent here is to create instances of textuality where the text is written of itself. That is to say, the text is generated as a function of language itself. Authorial intent is absent, replaced by a process of auto-generative writing.

  6. Text Rain

    "Text Rain is an interactive installation in which participants use the familiar instrument of their bodies, to do what seems magical—to lift and play with falling letters that do not really exist. In the Text Rain installation participants stand or move in front of a large projection screen. On the screen they see a mirrored video projection of themselves in black and white, combined with a color animation of falling letters. Like rain or snow, the letters appears to land on participants’ heads and arms. The letters respond to the participants’ motions and can be caught, lifted, and then let fall again. The falling text will ‘land’ on anything darker than a certain threshold, and ‘fall’ whenever that obstacle is removed. If a participant accumulates enough letters along their outstretched arms, or along the silhouette of any dark object, they can sometimes catch an entire word, or even a phrase. The falling letters are not random, but form lines of a poem about bodies and language. ‘Reading’ the phrases in the Text Rain installation becomes a physical as well as a cerebral endeavor."

  7. Talking Cure

    Talking Cure is an installation that includes live video processing, speech recognition, and a dynamically composed sound environment. It is about seeing, writing, and speaking — about word pictures, the gaze, and cure. It works with the story of Anna O, the patient of Joseph Breuer's who gave to him and Freud the concept of the "talking cure" as well as the word pictures to substantiate it. The reader enters a space with a projection surface at one end and a high-backed chair, facing it, at another. In front of the chair are a video camera and microphone. The video camera's image of the person in the chair is displayed, as text, on the screen. This "word picture" display is formed by reducing the live image to three colors, and then using these colors to determine the mixture between three color-coded layers of text. One of these layers is from Joseph Breuer's case study of Anna O. Another layer of text consists of the words "to torment" repeated — one of the few direct quotations attributed to Anna in the case study.

  8. Mondriaan

    This interactive installation permits participants to simply sketch out and edit compositions in the style of the great abstractionist Piet Mondrian.

    The developers describe it as follows: "Using our new patented infrared sensing technology on a rear-projected screen (in the same spirit as the Calder piece), this work permits participants to simply sketch out and edit compositions in the style of the great abstractionist Piet Mondrian. Create your own composition in 10 seconds!"

  9. text.curtain

    'text.curtain' explores relationships between poetic text and ludic play via an interactively evolving recombinant text. Projected on a wall-size screen, text.curtain presents a physics-based 'spring-mass' interface that organically responds to the interactions of multiple simultaneous users. As the piece is disrupted and letters wash back and forth, a granular synthesis engine provides realtime aural feedback. Tension is created through the simultaneous desire of users to both disrupt the existing text via 'play' and to 'read' the piece as it evolves and recombines in response.

  10. Generative Poems

    This work is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts using Processing to generate visual compositions which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence.These particular poems developed with Szekely were inspired by Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem (alphabetsquarebook). In all the experiments, three communication systems are coming together: image, writing and code.

    It is my aim to stretch the possibilities of programming to produce generative texts activated by sound and rooted in the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representation, production processes and progression with technological advances. As a research project, the work will have a valuable input in provoking discourses and bringing knowledge and understanding into the different explored disciplines.
