    Underbelly is a playable media fiction about a woman sculptor, carving on the site of a former colliery in the north of England, now landscaped into a country park. As she carves, she is disturbed by a medley of voices and the player/reader is plunged into an underworld of repressed fears and desires about the artist’s sexuality, potential maternity and worldly ambitions, mashed up with the disregarded histories of the 19th Century women who once worked underground mining coal.

  2. Tomorrow's News Today

    This responsive multimedia poem is built from several objects that work together to critique how news is reported and received in print, images, and television. She uses JavaScript to produce a scrolling poem composed of 40 newspaper headlines, each with a link that opens a tiny pop up window with an image that one needs to make interpretive leaps to relate to the headline. The Flash object presents a slices of grainy television images sliced into vertical strips while two text-to-speech voices read news sound bites— television’s equivalent to a headline. Depending on where the reader places the pointer, loudness is assigned to a male voice on the left speakers or a female voice reading on the right. The voices read the same looping text, seemingly in the same order, but starting in different points, and are synchronized to almost take turns, though there are overlaps. Both the scrolling lines of text and the spoken words reveal a prosody of headlines and sound bites: the rhythms of the news.

    This multimedia poem is an assault on the senses— visually, kinetically, and aurally— it bombards the reader with so much information, color, sound, and stimulus that it is difficult to process, much less read. The text is handwritten and moves, spins, changes around some boxes the reader can manipulate, moving each whirling cluster to a spot in the window where it might be legible. The music, noise, and speech loop loudly but barely understandably, much like the handwritten text. Even in the menu page the typed text is so skewed that it is barely legible.

  4. The Winter House

    This multimedia narrative shortlisted for the 2010 New Media Writing Prize combines a variety of genres and forms to tell an engaging story. This murder mystery brings the protagonist back to a mansion and boarding school to investigate her father’s untimely demise. The narrative and graphic design of this linear hypertext borrows heavily from the detective board game Clue (aka Cluedo), yet its treatment of the material using videogame interfaces, e-poetic deployment of its language, and smartly integrated multimedia keeps it from seeming cliché.   5. I Cried Of Course

    This multimedia version of William Minor’s poem takes the musical version and adds a layer of photographic documentation that brings out the personal and particular in the poem. The sad tone of the poem’s text is underscored by the piano and vocal performances, and the images help us visualize the details of what is behind this emotional energy. Here we see a man and a woman in black and white photographs, young, together, and happy to be there. Other images of the woman alone gazing out of the photograph’s frame, in one case wearing a wedding dress, suggest that the memory of the deceased young man is still alive within her. Images of manuscript versions of the poem, including drafts and handwritten musical scores show the work in progress, evolving from one version to the next. All of these objects— manuscripts, scores, photographs, audio recordings, and e-poem— seek to capture that which can only be experienced or imagined.

  6. Welcome to Pine Point

    his award-winning Web documentary about a short-lived mining town in Canada made the 2011 New Media Writing Award shortlist. A masterful, lovingly produced piece is challenging to categorize in terms of genre: is it a video (its interactivity and born-digital ontology make it difficult to label as “film”), memoir, narrative, poem, or an artistic website? As a multimedia work (using audio, video, text, images) that requires multimodal engagement (reading, listening, viewing, interaction) from its audience, it is fittingly multi-generic.   7. Fractalize 1: I've loved you from afar

    FRACTALIZE is a hypermedia fiction project created by Tony Vieira, with Lesley Loksi Chan and Arthur Yeung. The first installment, ”I've loved you from Afar,” is a fractal reminiscence of a romance across space and time. Created for Supercrawl 2017, a four day art and indie music festival in Hamilton, Canada, Fractalize is intended to exist both inside a gallery space as much as within the audience member’s smartphone. Narrative “fractals” will be delivered over the course of the five day ELO Conference and Festival via email and social media, with intentional knowledge gaps that users fill in based on their own experience, anxieties, and desires. Users experience the project in the form of VR/360º video gallery exhibit, video walks, web videos, photographs, original music, text messages, sound art, Spotify playlists, and social media posts. Characters within the narrative have their own social media identities which are regularly updated over the course of the exhibition, creating a blurring of the lines that separate reality and virtuality.

  8. TOPO_Trajectoires 20 ans de présence en art et littératures numériques

    In 2018, TOPO is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and its 20th anniversary of involvement in creation and dissemination of digital art. The Montreal artist-run centre TOPO is a laboratory for digital writings and creations for web, performance, and installation spaces. Its mandate is to incubate, produce, and circulate original multimedia artworks that explore interdisciplinary and intercultural hybridizations in the digital arts.
    It was through exploration of interactive narrative that the founders of TOPO – artists Michel Lefebvre and Eva Quintas – introduced TOPO to new-media circles in January 1998. A memorable ice storm had just ravaged Montréal when the FM network of Radio-Canada broadcasted a web-radio version of the three episodes of the photo-novel Liquidation, a first in Québec. This major pluri-media project, finalized in 2001 in the form of random fiction on CD-ROM, gave a foretaste of the organization’s orientations: collective creation, a multidisciplinary focus, exploration of various supports and narrative forms for new media, and extension of practices on the network into the public space and vice versa.

    A short multimedia-enhanced hypertext game about perpetual cycles of displacement and violence, as seen through the lens of a child. Takes about 15 minutes to read/play, and no gaming skills are required.

    Ishmael debuted at the 2017 Spring Thing interactive fiction festival, was selected to be showcased at the PixelPop Festival in St. Louis, was nominated for the "Best Social Impact Game" award at BIG: Brazil’s Independent Games Festival, was an IndieCade Finalist, and was shortlisted for the 2017 New Media Writing Prize
