    TOC is a multimedia epic about time: the invention of the second, the beating of a heart, the story of humans connecting through time to each other and to the world. An evocative fairy tale with a steampunk heart, TOC is a breath-taking visual novel, an assemblage of text, film, music, photography, the spoken word, animation, and painting. It is the story of a man who digs a hole so deep he can hear the past, a woman who climbs a ladder so high she can see the future, as well as others trapped in the clockless, timeless time of a surgery waiting room: God's time. Theirs is an imagined history of people who are fixed in the past, those who have no word for the future, and those who live out their days oblivious to both.

  2. Morpheus: Biblionaut

    The story of a poet sent to Alpha Centauri to test a nuclear bomb that can destroy a planet, who returns to Earth to discover that Earth has a ring instead of a moon and that there is - perhaps - no longer life there. The narrative is told linearly and lasts for about 20 minutes, with no opportunity to rewind  - it’s worth watching in a single setting though, both for the story itself and for the grungy space visuals created by Travis Alber: a scratched metal background with a window through which to watch the stars passing by, and dream images superimposed on or maybe reflected in the dull, stained metal.

  3. Tokyo Garage

    A poetry generator for the imaginary city. Tokyo Garage is a remix of Nick Montfort's "Taroko Gorge" -- a nature poem generator built in javascript. Rettberg modified the code and substituted all of the language of Montfort's work to create this poetry generator, which plays with received stereotypes of the Tokyo metropolis and of urbanity in general. A machinimatic reading was prepared for the DAC 2009 conference, including a clown reading the poem to an imaginary audience.

    A collaborative fictional description of a future Copenhagen told in descriptions of places on a satellite map of Copenhagen. The title is a play upon the PR organisation Wonderful Copenhagen. A bus tour of Copenhagen with readings from the work was organised in March 2009.

  7. The 24-Hr. Micro-Elit Project

    The 24-Hr. Micro-Elit Project experiments with microfiction, or flash fiction, a genre of literature that generally entails narratives of only 300-1000 words. Inspired by Richard Brautigan’s pithy “The Scarlatti Tilt”, a story of only 34 words published in 1971, my work involves 24 stories of 140 characters or less about life in an American city in the 21st C. delivered––or “tweeted”––on Twitter over a 24 hr. period.

    The launch date was Friday, August 21, beginning 12 a.m. PST. Each hour until 11 p.m., I posted a story, and followers of my twitter site were encouraged to tweet their own. After followers tweeted their stories, I cut and pasted them to the Project Blog. An archive of all of the stories can be found there.

  8. The Big Plot

    This is a romantic-spy story rendered into the genre of Recombinant Fiction. Four characters told a fiction using dialogues shown on several media channels. The cloned identity of a real spy was used to portray a story about the political and sentimental weakness of our era characterised by a dysfunctional sociality being created by social media communications. Actions in public environments completed the set of stages upon which the story was acted and audiences had an active role by unfolding and creating other pieces of fiction. The drama deconstructed language and symbolism of ideologies by remixing characters' lives and identities with real-world patterns. The work has been exhibited as an installation and there is also a web version.

  10. Golpe de Gracia

    Golpe de gracia is an interactive multimedia piece that combines text, illustration, audio, modeling, and animation and tells the story of a character who undergoes a "near death" experience; this particular situation also functions as a metaphor for the cultural transitions of the present moment. The text is comprised of three "narrative worlds": Cadáver exquisito, L'nea mortal and Muerte digital (Exquisite Corpse, Mortal Line, and Digital Death, respectively) and four "deepening rooms" (games, reading texts, study, and construction). The work offers several different degrees of interaction that range from taking decisions in order to follow the routes, all the way up to the collective construction of the text, along the way participating in several interactive games. Golpe de gracia also has an educative and communicative purpose, which is to make us aware of, and to contribute to, the development of collective knowledge.
