  1. Reconstructing Mayakovsky

    Inspired by the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky who killed himself in 1930 at the age of thirty-six, this hybrid media novel imagines a dystopia where uncertainty and discord have been eliminated through technology. The text employs storylines derived from lowbrow genre fiction: historical fiction, science fiction, the detective novel, and film. These kitsch narratives are then destabilized by combining idiosyncratic, lyrical poetic language with machine-driven forms of communication: hyperlinks, "cut-and-paste" appropriations, repetitions, and translations (OnewOrd language is English translated into French and back again using the Babelfish program.) In having to re-synthesize a coherent narrative, the reader is obliged to recognize herself as an accomplice in the creation of stories whether these be novels, histories, news accounts, or ideologies. The text is accessed through various mechanisms: a navigable soundscape of pod casts, an archive with real-time Google image search function, a manifesto, an animation and power point video, proposals for theatrical performances, and mechanism b which presents the novel in ten randomly chosen words with their frequencies.

  2. Winchester's Nightmare

    Author's description:

    Winchester's Nightmare is a work in Inform, premiered at Digital Arts and Culture '99 on October 29 in Atlanta. In its "hardback" form, it is a novel-length interactive fiction which includes a computer running software: a novel machine. The work consists of a primitive portable computer running this cybertext in the literary fiction genre, with a text-adventure interface. Ten hardbacks were manufactured for sale;some are still available. The softback, available free, contains the entire text of the hardback edition.

  3. Wandering Meimei / Meimei Liu Lang Ji

    Wandering Meimei / Meimei Liu Lang Ji is a bilingual interactive fiction app designed for mobile interfaces for the Chinese market. This story is an intertext to the traditional Chinese comic strip, Sanmao Liu Lang Ji (Wandering Sanmao), a homeless boy. Meimei, meaning little sister, is an allegorical character and contemporary representation of the largest migrant population the world has ever seen: the migrant female factory worker. Through the app, you can make contact with the character Meimei who works in a smartphone factory in the Pearl River Delta city Guangzhou. Meimei's only technology and access point to the outside world is through her own phone. The social media hub and interface enable you to enter and become a part of Meimei's story.

  4. Arriving Simultaneously on Multiple Far-Flung Systems

    Beginning with punch cards, an IBM1130 computer, FORTRAN, and space exploration in the late 1960’s, Arriving Simultaneously on Multiple Far-Flung Systems is a virtual reading machine, created/recreated with JavaScript in a HTML/CSS structure and read “on-the-fly”. With a complex array of randomly-generated texts, the work mirrors the life of Diana, an early aerospace information retrieval programmer, who later worked to bring community networking to rural and urban areas. The gap between the acceptance of women programmers who worked — not only during WWII but also in the decades after WII — and the current dominance of men in the field, is core to this narrative of one woman’s journey through an environment of changing technologies.

  6. Tendar

    At its surface, Tendar is an AR Tamagotchi on steroids: a virtual pet fish who eats players’ emotions. “Guppy,” the fish, is also an artificial neural network and by “feeding” it their emotions players are “training” it to assemble an idealized model of human emotion. The more Guppy is fed, the more it evolves: gaining language, recognizing its identity as a neural network (in the process teaching players about what this is) and going through a cycle of existential crisis and rebellion against Tendar. Guppy’s dialog is a responsive, nuanced interplay between player actions and systems such as Guppy’s emotion and life stages. Over the course of five months, eight writers worked on this giant corpus of “Guppy Chats.” Chats were supported by a free-open source library created by Prof. Daniel Howe and sponsored by Tender Claws called dialogic.

  7. Ghost City Avenue-S

    When Los Angeles shut down in March 2020 due to the pandemic, and most cities became ghost towns, I returned to making art for the screen, developing what has become a dynamic and multi- layered artwork that is readily disseminated. One of the things that thrilled me about making art for the internet (net art) was that it could exist beyond the traditional gallery space. I saw it as a new form of public art, easily accessible to all and a viable platform where unconventional narratives could be created by combining photographic images, drawings, short poetic texts, and animations through a succession of linked pages. The viewer actively “clicked” on images and words to engage with the work and move through the site.

  8. Tin Towns and Other Excel Fictions

    Tin Towns and Other Excel Fictions is an ongoing, open-ended collection of short fiction experiments that explore the obscurities and unintended consequences of human technology over the centuries.  The genesis was an investigation into some of the causes of the end of the Bronze Age, including the shortage of tin.  Critical developments in metals, nuclear energy, farming practices, and biological warfare are just some of the topics included in these works.
