    Golem was a two channel video installation where the two monitors were arranged like the pages of an open book. The imagery was derived from medieval illuminated books so the overall effect was of an electronically illuminated manuscript. The work took as its theme the ancient Jewish myth of the Golem, a human-like creature created to do the bidding of its creator, the genesis of the Frankenstein story. The work deals with the issues around contemporary technologies such as genetics and Artificial Intelligence.

  3. Evolution

    Evolution is a online artwork that emulates the writing and compositions of poet and artist Johannes Heldén. The application analyzes a set of all published text- and sound-work by the artist and generates a continuously evolving poem that simulates Heldéns style : in vocabulary, the spacing in-between words, syntax. In this performance, the digital version of artist meets the original. The aim is to raise questions about authenticity, about the future, about physics and science fiction.

  4. ExtraPhysical Worlds

    Publié en 2001 par Bluescreen, le pseudonyme du créateur du programme, ExtraPhysicalWorld est un programme qui se trouve sur le CD alire12, la douzième publication d’une revue inspirée par une coopératif d’auteurs, y compris Phillipe Bootz. Ce collectif qui a inspiré BlueScreen s’appelait L.A.I.R.E, (Lecture Art Innovation Recherche Écriture) et a été créé en octobre 1988. Pourtant, Bluescreen a fait partie d'un autre collectif qui s'appelait Transitoire Observable, créé en 2003. C’est dans les fichiers du CD-ROM que l’on trouve le « site » d’ExtraPhysicalWorld (Les mondes extra-physiques). Normalement, on lançait le site en y accédant sur internet. Cependant, en septembre 2014, le site d’ExtraPhysicalWorld ne marche plus. Donc, il a fallu accéder au programme via les fichiers dans le CD d’alire12. En tout cas, le programme d’ExtraPhysicalWorld se caractérise par quelques menus qui fournissent des renseignements et des animations variés. L’entrée Écrits.txt du menu comprend un article écrit par Bluescreen en 2001 sur la conceptualisation du monde extra-physique.

  5. Siri and Me

    SIRI&me is an art experiment that translates the formula of television programing onto a cross-social-media platform. A combination of reality TV and sitcom, SIRI&me proposes a new form of entertainment based solely on social media. Each episode consists of a screenshot of a text conversation between iPhone’s Siri and the phone’s owner, Esmeralda. Organized in three seasons of ten episodes each, the virtual sitcom investigates the complex relationship humans have developed with technology through the evolving friendship of its two characters – Siri and Esmeralda.

  6. Ice-bound

    Ice-bound is an interactive novel that combines a printed art book with an iPad app. Our goal was to create an experience with both high-quality surface text and significant player agency. The story concerns an encounter with a fictional artificial intelligence, a simulation of a long-dead author who enlists the player's help to finish his original's final novel. Inspired by the dense, labyrinthical texture of works like Nabokov's Pale Fire and Mark Danielewski's House of Leaves, the novel is a unique collaboration between two artists, both of whom are writers, coders, and graphic designers. Each story is built around a dynamically chosen set of symbols representing possible elements of the story. These might be traits a character could have, or plots that could be included in the story. When a story is first visited, the symbols are assigned to an author-defined group of sockets which can be turned on or off by the player. However, the player can only turn a limited number of sockets on at one time.

    Prom Week is a social simulation game being developed at the University of California at Santa Cruz. In Prom Week the player shapes the lives of a group of highschool students in the most dramatic week of their highschool career. Using our sophisticated social artificial intelligence system, Comme il Faut, Prom Week is able to combine the dynamic simulation of games like the Sims with the detailed characters and dialog of story driven games.   8. StoryFace

    "StoryFace" is a digital fiction based on the capture and recognition of facial emotions.

    The user logs onto a dating website. He/she is asked to display, in front of the webcam, the emotion that seems to characterize him/her the best. After this the website proposes profiles of partners. The user can choose one and exchange with a fictional partner. The user is now expected to focus on the content of messages. However, the user's facial expressions continue to be tracked and analyzed… 

    What is highlighted here is the tendency of emotion recognition devices to normalize emotions. Which emotion does the device expect? We go from the measurement of emotions to the standardization of emotions. 

    StoryFace was re-published in The New River in 2018.

    ‘Bucky’ Fuller’s well-known quote, originally published in his book I Seem to Be a Verb (1970) contrasts human participation in the material world (which Fuller suggests can be described with nouns) and the ongoing evolutionary processes which influence and shape that world (which Fuller suggests can be described with verbs).
