  2. The Executor

    "The Executor" was written in an unusual way. Each author took turns writing sentences, beginning with the final sentence of the story and working backwards.

    In a release from Spineless Books, Montfort and Gillespie state that "without planning the content of the story, [they] alternated writing sentences" (Montfort). Each author contributed sentences without knowing the direction that the narrative would take.

    The plot follows Jeremy Salader, who returns to a past he has left behind. At some point in his life he made the decision to escape from his life and move towards a new future. A phone call forces Salader to return to his home. By simply looking through the phonebook, Jeremy realizes that his sister, Selma, is still living in the family home caring for their dying mother. When Jeremy meets with Selma, Jeremy's attachment to his estranged mother becomes clear. Selma feels that Jeremy and his mother need to reconcile because she can no longer deal with a dying parent alone. No decision is made and both siblings are left contemplating the future.

  4. Die Aaleskorte der Ölig

    "Die Aaleskorte der Ölig" is a combination adventure with 20 scenes by Dirk Günther and Frank Klötgen which won the Pegasus Award of DIE ZEIT, the german prize for internet literature, in 1998. It is based on a short story with only one perspective. Before the adventure starts, the reader has a chance to participate by choosing the perspective for each scene. The five protagonists are the woman Ölig, Hohmann, a group of children and an eel. Afterwards the so called "movie" starts. Every scene has a different picture and text to describe the plot which changes based on the decisions of the user in the beginning.

  5. Autofiction on Screen: Self-representation of an Egyptian ‘Spinster’ in a Literary Blog

    In this paper the blog Yawmiyyat 3nis [Diary of a Spinster] written by the Egyptian 3Abeer Sulayman [Abeer Soliman] is conceived as a form of autofiction. In fact, two aspects of online writing are of great importance for Egyptian bloggers. Firstly, blogging has given the Egyptian young people the possibility of sharing their innermost feelings and daily frustration without the fear of identification and humiliation due to their relative anonymity. Secondly, the computer operates as a projective device that allows users to discover and create different versions of themselves (Sorapure, 2003). Thus, blog writing facilitates autobiographic writing but at the same time turns daily life into fiction. The analysis of Abeer Soliman’s blog aims to show how the computer has an impact on the way diaries are written. On a structural level, I will highlight the presence of distinct literary features that are enhanced by the medium: the use of visual/audio components, the interaction with readers, and the presence of links. All these elements are essential for the understanding of Abeer’s self-representation.

    The Rainbow Factory is a interactive black comedy poem by Peter Howard made in flash. It's about how rainbows are made in a factory and that it is "Dirty business". 
    When you start it up you will be met with a indroduction scene with the title and then the gates opening to the factory. Then you are introduced to the factory and you are able to click on it's windows to reveal how rainbows are made.

  7. Hors Catégorie

    Hors Catégorie is an interactive fiction by Chris Calabro and David Benin developed in 2007.

    It is possible to play it on almost every system, even on Smartphone.

    The used Software is a z-machine Interpreter, which is a game’s requirement as the player needs it in order to emulate an Infocom machine.

    It takes place entirely in a single hotel room, with several subrooms. Unlike many adventure-like interactive fictions, location, possessions, and strength are not the main obstacles of this game, but rather player knowledge and moral choices. The point is to explore the inner conflict of the protagonist and shape his character. This is why the typical presence of interactive fictions’ obstacles makes Hors Catégorie innovative and different because here they are the player moral choices.

    The title of the game comes from the 'out of category' classification of difficult climbs in the Tour de France, where the game is set. The protagonist is a rider in the Tour, just waking, getting ready to take on the day's current stage.

  8. The Madeleine Effect

    "The Madeleine Effect" is a digital story project, an artistic look at ways to incorporate a creative text based story in the linear format and language styling of a novel into the game world. 

    I believe that when a primarily text-based fiction story is created in a visual narrative medium, it can be utilized to prompt the user to act as a character. The user therefore may be guided to perform through a narrative. I am interested in looking at interactive fiction from the perspective of a writer aiming to invite meaningful interaction leading towards playful behaviors, or acting, on the part of the player. 

    "The Madeleine Effect" is a fiction story that is experienced through both digital and print media. The story interface aims to be interactive through the player's performance, which is demonstrated by inputting text into the story while playing a defined role. The interactivity in this project is focused at this time so as to more easily observe the ideas I am exploring. My hope is that this project will spur thought and conversation about ideas for increased interactivity and a more intelligent technical structure.

  9. Crossed Lines

    Crossed Lines is a multiform (or multiplot) film telling the stories of nine characters in a way that the viewer can constantly explore and switch between all nine forms, and can simultaneously witness all sides of the characters’ exchanges which are taking place between the nine remote locations. The starting point of the piece was to conceive a series of narratives that could be viewed as individual stories, but would also reference and link to the other stories, as is the case of the multiplot film genre. As McKee has noted ‘multiplot films never develop a central plot; rather they weave together a number of stories of subplot size’. (1998:227) The difference with Crossed Lines is that it is delivered through an interactive interface paradigm, meaning that the viewer has the power to navigate and order the stories themselves, and to create a story of varying complexity depending on the number of different characters which are selected through the interface.

    Pieces is a puzzle story. To read the work, you assemble the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, each piece yielding a portion of narrative. Under your hands, several lives take shape in earnest if sometimes wobbly and unprepossessing assemblages. The manner in which you put the pieces together affects the course of the characters’ lives, different configurations resulting in different outcomes.
