1. Winterscape

   "Winterscape" is an Ambient Video meditation on the changing faces of the Canadian Rockies in winter. The piece is a visual essay that takes the viewer deep into the mountain environment, and in the process expands the limits of cinematic time and space in the context of the recombinant moving image. 

   Ambient Video artworks are "video paintings" that hang on the walls of our homes and offices. They present a considerable aesthetic challenge for the artist. They must give visual pleasure in any given moment, but can not require our attention at any time. Since they live in our homes, they must also support repeated viewing, yet still offer fresh insights each time. Winterscape exemplifies the three techniques I rely on to meet these aesthetic challenges: striking visual composition, manipulation of cinematic time, and the use of visual layers and transitions. 

   Because ambient video works must be slow-paced, the pressure on the original composition is considerable. This piece is based on strong subject imagery with an emphasis on visual impact, simplicity of composition, and the subtle play of light, color and motion.

2. Sky and Wires: At Home and Homeless

   "Sky and Wires: At Home and Homeless" is a response to a contemporary life of engaging with places not as a space to be, but as a space to chart a trajectory through.

   Artist Statemenet:
   The conceptual focus of my work is the synthesis of ideas from cartography, information theory and phenomenology. It exists in a space between the footsteps of the walker, the pulse of a neuron, and the progress of civilization. I'm interested in perspectives different from human-centered values and experiences. A signal isn’t given meaning only upon the receiver’s understanding of it. Noise is part of the signal. A page of random characters contains more information than a Shakespeare sonnet. Formally, monotonous structures and extended crescendos induce near-hypnoidal states, while acknowledging the more aggressive aspects of contemporary life. The conflict between movement and stillness is always present. These aspects take intermedial forms, foregrounding the interplay of sonic and visual elements.

3. OneSmallStep: a MySpace LuvStory

   "OneSmallStep: a MySpace LuvStory" is an unfolding automated jam—a conscious sampling and randomized regurgitation of MySpace.com media archeology wherein desire, fantasy and fetish form a composted feast for the withered and lonely senses in an eternally habitual loop of voyeuristic consumption, spectacular regurgitation, virtual intimacy and identity production/consumption. 

   Artist Statement

   We are not ourselves. We cut and paste as we are cut and pasted. We are the remix of images and sounds that never existed outside of this mediated dream. And we are happy to exist this way. 

   "OneSmallStep: a MySpace LuvStory" is an unfolding automated jam - a conscious sampling and randomized regurgitation of MySpace.com media archeology wherein desire, fantasy and fetish form a composted feast for the withered and lonely senses in an eternally habitual loop of voyeuristic consumption, spectacular regurgitation, virtual intimacy and identity production/consumption. 

   With each launch, "OneSmallStep" runs continuously while randomly remixing content from a database that is periodically updated.

   Calling America" is an internet-based oral histories project that explores the possibilities of popular communications technologies in the practice of participatory journalism, documentary and the preservation of people's histories. 

   Artist Statement

   "Calling America" is an internet-based oral histories project that explores the possibilities of popular communications technologies in the practice of participatory journalism, documentary and the preservation of people's histories. Calling America programs make use of cellular telephones and related technologies in conjunction with blogging platforms in the process of producing blog-based documentaries—or blogumentaries—concerning various sites of activist and grass-roots led organizational practices in the United States.

6. (Dis)Location, (Dis)Connection, (Dis)Embodiment

   (Dis)Location, (Dis)Connection, (Dis)Embodiment" is a collective experiment in database video and random access narrative. The installation is the work of many artists, each responsible for thirty seconds of video attempting to engage with paradoxes of digital culture and 21st. This is a collaborative project with Edgar Endress and the Students of the Art and Visual Technology Department at George Mason University.

   According to researches: a) search is the 2nd most used service on the web; b) people are using web search more and more and they trust their results, and c) people rarely read beyond the 2nd page of search results. These facts reflect the enormous power and influence the search engines (like Google, Yahoo, etc.) exert over us. This work intends to cause awareness about the issues related to the use of search engines on the web—many times not known by the search engine users—like privacy, control, data manipulation, source and reliability of data, top 10 dictatorship, among others

8. Skindoscope

   Web-art work that focus on the poetics of alterity – the game of identity and alterity. Based on interactors’ data (skin color, name, city, country, gender, height and weight) the work creates different visual kaleidoscopes intending to cause reflection about people’s differences and similarities.

   The artist also produced a version of the work for Second Life, where the kaleidoscope is formed by the leaves of a tree. Each avatar who interacts creates a leaf with his/her skin color and each 10 leaves created causes the tree to produce a coin of L$ 1,00, which can be taken by any avatar who touches it.

9. Contemplating Flight

   Framed by various folktales, "Contemplating Flight" explores established female representations and further tests the limitations of participation in a challenging narrative grammatology.

   Artist Statement:
   Like previous artworks on 6amhoover.com "Contemplating Flight" explores the interplay between digital narrative, image and interaction. It aims to question the paradigm of interaction equating to empowerment.

   Bettelheim like many ponders the importance of the forest "Since ancient times the near impenetrable forest in which we get lost has symbolized the dark, hidden, near-impenetrable world of our unconscious. If we have lost the framework which gave structure to our past life and must now find our way to become ourselves, and have entered this wilderness with an as yet undeveloped personality, when we succeed in finding our way out we shall emerge with a much more highly developed humanity."
