    The poem combines aspects of love, death, and nature in one piece. Originally it consisted of three parts: text, photography, and sound. In the Flash version these parts are arranged in a loop completed by a minimalist interface (to pause).

  2. White-Faced Bromeliads on 20 Hectares

    White-Faced Bromeliads on 20 Hectares is a JavaScript investigation of literary variants with a new text generated every ten seconds. Its goals are as follows. (1) To present a poetic evocation of the images, vocabulary, and sights of Costa Rica's language and natural ecosystems though poetic text and visuals. (2) To investigate the potential of literary variants. Thinking of poems where authors have vacillated between variant lines, Bromeliads offers two alternatives for each line of text thus, for an 8 line poem, offering 512 possible variants, exploring the multi-textual possibilities of literary variants. (3) It explores the richness of multiple languages. (4) It mines the possibilities of translation, code, and shifting digital textuality. Having variants regenerate every ten seconds provides poems that are not static, but dynamic; indeed one never finishes reading the same poem one began reading. This re-defines the concept of the literary object and offers a more challenging reading, both for the reader and for the writer in performance, than a static poem. The idea is to be able to read as if surfing across multiple textual possibilities.

  3. Landscapes

    Landscapes presents five animated canvases which together comprise a dreamscape of anarchic play, urban order, and media saturation. Each landscape pairs a short Biblical proverb with a series of images taken from street protests, multimedia conferences, Hollywood films, and other private and public sites. The proverb in each of the landscapes scrolls on a loop across the screen and is "locked" in position behind a viewing portal. To read the proverb is to make do with the fractured characters visible through small holes in the portal.

  4. ACITEOP. Disfunciones poéticas del lenguaje.

    Roman Jakobson defined the poetic function of language as being governed by principles of selection and order. Under this vision the poet is in charge of selecting and organising words in a particular way in order to achieve a poetic effect.

    ACITEOP is a programme that groups together different experimental tools used for constructing poetic narratives, both textual and visual, through the deconstruction of the poetic function of language using different algorithms.

    The result, which is different with each reading or interaction, is both a deconstructed text and a brand new piece of work generated from that same process of deconstruction.

    This first version is a simple example of the programme that creates a narrative based on text, sound and images, which begins with the deconstruction of the poem "Between What I See and What I Say" by Octavio Paz, who dedicated the poem to the Russian linguist Roman Jakobson after his death.

  5. PO.EX '70-­80: The Electronic Multimodal Repository

    Portuguese experimental poetry of the 1970s and 1980s includes visual poetry, sound poetry, videopoetry, performance poetry, and computer poetry. Experimental literary objects, practices, and events often consist of an interaction between notational forms on paper and site-specific live performances. Thus the eventuality of literary meaning is dramatically foregrounded by turning the text into a script for an act whose performance co-constitutes the work. The aim of ‘PO.EX ‘70-’80: A Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature’ (http://po-ex.net/) is to represent this intermedia and performative textuality in an electronic database. The aggregation and marking up of this large multimodal corpus has material and interpretative implications which challenge our representations of experimental works and practices. Whether taking the form of facsimiles of books and paper collages, photographs of installations, videos of performances or emulations of early digital poems, digital remediation re-performs the works for the current techno-social context.

    Described by the author as "an online philosophical poetry toy for poets and philosophers from the age of four up." The piece jumbles the letter of the word "meaning" in space, allowing the reader to manipulate their motion in space.

  7. Saving the Alphabet

    This subtly haunting poem tells the story of how each letter from the alphabet disappeared, or was made to disappear, by corporations obeying a secret agenda. The conspiracy theory overtones are underscored by the use of sound, a short loop of metallic whispering wind or water and a handful of soft musical notes. Clicking on each letter on the left hand column will take you to the corresponding letter and narrative of its disappearance, with the large letter disappearing as you read the accompanying text, but it also starts a slower, almost imperceptible, fading process of those letters in the entire work. If you click through quickly and read the whole poem you may not even notice, but step away for a minute and you’ll find that the letters you have read have disappeared from all the language in the poem and the result may be challenging to read (see image below). This more than anything provides a visceral impact, as we try to read a barely functional language mutilated by loss of letters.

  8. Acoustic and Visual Imagination in Poetry from the Neo_Avantgarde to New Media Poetry in Yugoslav and Post-Yugoslav Poetry

    At the beginning of my text I will consider contemporary interpretations of the visual and acoustic aspects of poetry. The main references will be texts written by American poets, performers, artists, theoreticinas such as Charles Bernstein, Michael Davidson, and Johanna Drucker. Shortly, I will point to the history of these phenomena in the West. Special attention will be given to the concepts of plurivocality and plurality of visual projections in different kinds of experimental poetry.

    In applying these concepts in considering Yugoslav Avant-Gardists:  Franci Zagoričnik and OHO group (Slovenia), Vlado Martek (Croatian) and Katalin Ladik and Awin authors (Serbia) I will first discuss the status of experimental poetry in so called small cultures. Then I will show the range of experimentation in the work of the poets I have mentioned, who worked within the Yugoslav socialism and post-Yougoslav postsocialism.
