    Ce Basiques se propose d'explorer les contrées de la littérature numérique. Ses approches sont diverses et relèvent de conceptions parfois antagonistes. Elle forme un continent ancré dans des cultures variées qui dialoguent entre elles en son sein parce qu'elle les mixe et les questionne. La littérature numérique s'insère ainsi pour partie dans la continuité de démarches littéraires parfois anciennes, mais présente par ailleurs des points de rupture d'avec elles. C'est pourquoi son rapport avec les littératures issues des traditions classiques demeure conflictuel, souvent à son corps défendant, et ce, sans doute, pour longtemps encore. Que cela ne t'empêche pas, ami lecteur, de l'explorer. Elle te réservera bien des surprises, enflammera ton imaginaire comme il sied à toute littérature et saura te procurer toute une alchimie d'émotions, tant affectives qu'intellectuelles, sur des modes inattendus et vierges de toute rengaine.

  2. Liberdade

    Liberdade [Freedom in Portuguese] is a collaborative digital creation that promotes a dialogue between poetry and videogame languages. Both immersive and interactive, integrating poetic language and technological forms, the work reproduces parts of Liberdade, a neighborhood in São Paulo, allowing users to metaphorically explore the concept of memory. These programmed environments can be saved by readers as personal memories. The convergence of stories (mostly microtales), animations (such as stop-motion and video fragments), poems, and a variety of sound textures, provides an experience that challenges ways of reading and writing in programmed 3D environments. Created at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in 2013, by Chico Marinho and Alckmar Santos, with the help of programmer Lucas Junqueira and writer Álvaro Andrade Garcia, a future version of this complex simulated experience will evolve into a multiplayer version, in which different readers/users will be able to interact with each other's memories of the reading experience.

  3. Populist Modernism: Printed Instagram Poetry and the Literary Highbrow

    “InstaPoets” are a collection of individual Instagrammers who’ve converted their social media capital (hundreds of thousands of followers, millions of “likes” and reposts) into printed book bestseller status. Rupi Kaur alone tallied 1.4 million sales of her first book of Insta Poetry, ​Milk and Honey​, in 2017. Uniquely among books by social media celebrities (​c.f.​books by YouTube celebrities), fans of InstaPoets buy printed book versions of ​exactly the same content​ that’s available for free in an Instagram feed. Why do these fans buy what they already have for free?

    This paper describes the Instagram Poetry phenomenon, then situates it in two contexts: debates about high- and lowbrow digital literary culture; and book industry efforts to understand--and monetize--digital interactivity.

  4. Eccentric Peninsular: The Cornish Coast as a site for Deconstruction in Intermedia Poetry

    This paper analyses the use of ‘the coast’, particularly the coast of England’s South-West Peninsular, as a site for deconstruction in the works of a number of intermedia poet-artists. It is based primarily on selected readings of digital literature works which specifically engage with the South-West coast, covering works by Mark Goodwin, Andrew Fentham, Penny Florence and JR Carpenter (including the latest work by JR Carpenter ‘This is a Picture of Wind’, shortlisted for the New Media Writing Prize 2018). The reading considers the texts’ representations of ‘coasts’ and ‘peninsulars’ and their relationship to the de-stabilisation and frustration of positions of authority and authoritative structures (especially positions and structures of nationalism and sexism). The South-West peninsular can itself be considered de-centred and eccentric, remote from England’s administrative and financial centres and with a rich history of translocal interactions and migrations (c.f. Natalie Pollard) between other peripheral artistic and cultural regions and nations (especially those with Celtic heritage).
