  1. Echelon

    This work was made in response to a call by Metamute (London) for Jam Echelon Day 2001. It simply employs all the words stored in the Echelon system in a program that automatically generates texts using whatever dictionary it has available.

    Whenever a user moves their mouse over a text it will automatically re-write itself as a new text. It will then e-mail that text to a random e-mail address (this last e-mailing component of the work is currently disabled, but will be enabled by the artist at the appropriate time - the effect will be to flood the net with echelon sensitive messages at the rate of hundreds per minute, depending on user interaction).

    Echelon is the worldwide signals intelligence network run by the US National Security Agency and the UK Government Communications Headquarters in collaboration with Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Echelon uses large ground-based radio antennae in the United States, Italy, the UK, Turkey, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and several other countries to intercept satellite transmissions and some surface traffic, as well as employing satellites to tap transmissions between cities.

  3. The Experience of the Unique in Reading Digital Literature

    Traditionally in literary criticism, importance has been laid on the uniqueness of the expression (the author says something that nobody else has said before, or, says something in a way that nobody else has done before) and the uniqueness of experience (my reading of a book is always different compared to any other readings). With digital literature we are facing a wholly new situation. Cybertextual literature possesses devices for creating a different textual whole for each reader and reading session. Even though the piece of computer code underlying the work remains the same, the surface level may be different on each and every run. In this situation the reader may truly face a unique text, something that nobody else may ever see.

    I will ponder the consequences of this new textual condition, especially from the perspective of personal reception and interpretation. I will also present some examples of this sort of works, and classify certain main categories, such as truly unique vs. pseudo unique text, and text where uniqueness is created through programming alone, and such where (one or several) reader(s) is partly responsible.

  4. The Readers Project

    Programmatic or computational art is often, although not necessarily, related to art in other media: visual, performative, conceptual, and so on. The art systems of The Readers Project relate to writing and to reading, to our encounters with literary language. This project is an essay in language-driven digital art, in writing digital media. The Readers Project visualizes reading, although it does not do this in the sense of miming conventional human reading. Rather, the project explores and visualizes existing and alternative vectors of reading, vectors that are motivated by the properties and methods of language and language art.

  5. M.U.C. Love Letter Generator

    Arguably the first work of electronic literature, this 1952 program used Alan Turing's random number generator to create combinatory love letters on the Manchester Mark I computer. While the output may not be of high literary quality, Strachey discovered and implemented the basic the basic structures of combinatory literature, at a very early point in history.

  6. Palavrador

    Palavrador is a poetic cyberworld built in 3D (Palavrador comes from the Portuguese word palavra, which itself means "word"). Directed by Francisco Carlos de Carvalho Marinho (Chico Marinho), it was nonetheless conceived and implemented as a result of synergetic collective assemblage of ideas and activities of a wider group of authors with backgrounds in the arts, literature, and computer science. Six flocks of meandering poems autonomously wander through the three-dimensional space. The readers may choose how many flocks of poems they want to see wandering through the environment, and the poems (botpoems) are able to turn around obstacles to keep their unveiling cohesion while moving through the space. The logic of movements was implemented using artificial intelligence procedures based on swarm behavior and steering behaviors of autonomous locomotion agents. Among the virtual objects of the Palavrador there is a labyrinth whose architecture is generated by mathematical procedures (fractal). There are also video poems, the sounds from which are modulated in relation to the distance of the readers, thus creating an immersive journey with a musical dimension.

  7. Grafik Dynamo

    Grafik Dynamo is a net art work by Kate Armstrong & Michael Tippett that loads live images from the internet into a live action comic strip. From the time of its launch in 2005 to the end of 2008, the work used a live feed from social networking site LiveJournal. The work is currently using a feed from Flickr. The images are accompanied by narrative fragments that are dynamically loaded into speech and thought bubbles and randomly displayed. Animating the comic strip using dynamic web content opens up the genre in a new way: Together, the images and narrative serve to create a strange, dislocated notion of sense and expectation in the reader, as they are sometimes at odds with each other, sometimes perfectly in sync, and always moving and changing. The work takes an experimental approach to open ended narrative, positing a new hybrid between the flow of data animating the work and the formal perameter that comprises its structure.

  8. Pulse

    Poem Pulse is an g.a.c.o.i. (Generative, Autopoietic, Collaborative, Open-ended, Intermedial) electronic literary piece.

    G:

    generative is the poem's last stanza of– system picks out one minipulse out of the list of the saved minipulses
    generative is the visual – the leading geometry and thus also the placement of the lyrics
    generative is the composition of the loops of the main melody

    A:

    the concept of its being autopoietic represents the fact, that the final stanza is a minipoem that was created from the words of the whole poem, thus creating a part of it from itself

    C:

    pulse is collaborative because after having read the whole poem, a reader can create her own minipoem by clicking on the projected words of pulse

    O:

    its open-ended nature allows (through reader's submission of the minipoem and its saving) to extend the list of minipoems, out of which generates the stanza of the next pulses

  9. Fictions d’Issy

    Fictions d’Issy is a generative novel, its narrative being gradually composed as it is presented to the readers. It was first shown at the 2005 edition of the 1ER CONTACT FESTIVAL.

    It retraces the story of two characters – he and she – and their relationship, oscillating between breaking-up and being involved. The story - continuously generated, sentence after sentence - is published in Issy-les-Moulineaux’ eleven urban e-newspapers, alternating with municipal information. The story takes place in the town of Issy; the names of public establishments, streets and squares are memorised by the text-generating device and appear regularly throughout the narrative. The local population is thus able to follow the characters’ adventures as they take place in familiar places.

    This poem, together with 'Square 01', is part of an ongoing series of interactive, experimental and generative poetic texts to generate visual compositions, which fill the viewable space in time, with a growing pattern triggered by sound and silence. If the sound is loud the letters become thicker and bigger. As in many of my pieces, the poems don’t exist until the viewer interacts with them. String_code is the visual representation of the code in Square 01, this is why I am presenting both as a pair. In all poems, the three communication systems converge: image, writing and code. Square 01 is formed by the western alphabet. All the letters appear lineally, in rows, superimposed over each other, until they eventually become an indistinguishable blob. It was my intention to explore the tradition of concrete poetry, its formal representations and production processes using the programming language of Processing. Taking model in Hansjorg Mayer’s alphabetenquadratbuch poem, its minimalist visual form of multiple layers, the desire to escape from the linguistic through the obliteration of the letters and the encapsulation in it by the square.
