    Tantderêves, a brief poem made with Flash animation, in which, in a background of lines of letters generating at a high speed there is a selection of those -in white-which are going to constitute the verses of a poem. The poet shares a dialogue with the machine, he asks him questions, and this answers with a verse by Paul Éluard: "Tant de rêves dans l'air". The multimedia format preserves perfectly the poetical content that Valdeolmillos intends to transmit, everything takes place in the screen in a background of harmony between typography, color and movement. A clear example of how to integrate the poetic word with a cybernetic machine.

  3. RACTER

    Racter is an artificial intelligence simulator from 1984. Similar to Eliza, Racter will converse with the user until boredom occurs. However, there's a twist - Racter is not quite sane! This makes for a lot of fun conversation.

    Racter was originally programmed on an early Apple computer.

    RACTER was designed in a tongue-in-cheek manner, using remarkably minimal resources, to amuse and entertain its users, rather than to advance the research in natural language processing. In conversation, RACTER plays a very active, almost aggressive role, jumping from topic to topic in wild associations, ultimately producing the manner of - as its co-creator Tom Etter calls it - an "artificially insane" raconteur. Its authors publicize RACTER as an "intense young program [that] haunted libraries, discussion societies, and sleazy barrooms in a never-ending quest to achieve that most unreachable of dreams: to become a raconteur."

  5. Cyborgs in the Mist

    Cyborgs in the Mist is an enquiry which takes the form of a movie, a sound
    installation, photo prints, and a book. The film presents the LOPH research lab
    and its utopian proposals to struggle against the planned obsolescence of
    humankind. Taking into account the development of robotics and artificial forms
    of intelligence, the LOPH research lab experiments with ways to help humans
    adapt to their new environment, and to put them in a position to fight against their planned obsolescence. How can we anticipate this shift in the logic of evolution?
    How can we adapt to this change with a minimum of violence? Academic teams,
    science-fiction writers, and new forms of artificial intelligence work together to
    anticipate the most disastrous scenarios.

  6. The Listeners

    The Listeners is a linguistic performance, installation, and Amazon-distributed third-party app or skill – transacted between speakers or speaker-visitors and an Amazon Echo. The Echo embodies a voice-transactive Artificial Intelligence and domestic robot, that is named for its wake-word, Alexa. The Listeners is a custom software skill built on top of this infrastructure. The Listeners have their own interaction model. They listen and speak in their own way – as designed and scripted by the artist – using the distributed, cloud-based voice recognition and synthetic speech of Alexa and her services.

  7. Yuefu

    Yuefu is a poetry generation system using OpenAI’s GPT, a Generative Pre-Trained natural language model pretrained on Chinese newspapers, that is fine-tuned with classical Chinese poetry. The developers write in their paper describing the system that it does not use "human crafted rules or features," or "any additional neural components". The system can generate poems in various formal, classical styles.  

    The example shown is translated by Ru-Ping Cheng and Jeff Ding for the ChinAI newsletter. It is an example of Cang Tou Shi, a Chinese version of acrostic poems. "In this case," the translator explains, "the first words of each line form the title of the poem: 神经网络 (neural networks)." Some other examples of the system's output are shown in a preprint published by the system's creators, and a translation of a Chinese newspaper article (entered into ELMCIP) provides translations of more examples.

    Mexica: 20 Years–20 Stories [20 años–20 historias] contains 20 short narratives developed by the computer program MEXICA. Plots describe fictional situations related to the Mexicas (also known as Aztecs), ancient inhabitants of what today is Mexico City. This is the first book of short-stories produced completely by a creative agent capable of evaluating and making judgments about its own work, as well as incorporating into its knowledge-base the pieces it produces. By contrast with other, statistical models, MEXICA is inspired by how humans actually develop fictional stories. The book, in both Spanish and English, also includes source references related to the program. Preface by Fox Harrell.

  10. The Singularity

    The Singularity is a web-based AI narrative system that demonstrates the ethical issues, hidden biases and misbehavior of emerging technologies such as machine learning, face tracking and big data. The system tracks users' eye positions through a webcam, and continuously feeds users directly into their eyes with infinite Reddit posts containing the latest progress in AI along with random news and ads. By visualizing eye trajectories over time, it suggests possible misuses and dangers of all-pervasive data tracking. The near-invisible operations underpinning the technologies could bring visible and fundamental changes to the society, leading the world to a "technological singularity" in which technology governs all aspects of human society. This work consists of three sub-systems:
