  1. Birds Singing Other Birds' Songs

    Author description: This work originated when I was invited to exhibit at the Medway Galleries. The most interesting features of the gallery were its high ceiling and three large windows, which I was inspired to use in the work. I wanted to explore kinetic typography, the animation of images and sound. I came across a transcription of birds' songs in the book The Thinking Ear. Suddenly, I was drawn to this transcription because of the similarities with the phonemes I was using in my other works. The repetitive aspect of letters and what looked like syllables reminded me of sound poems. So, I decided to ask some singers to sing their own interpretation of the transcriptions of the songs, in order to play with the interpretative process of these translations. Having been translated first from birds' song into linguistic interpretations, now the birdsongs would be re-interpreted by the human voice. The sounds that emerged from this study were later attached to the animated birds in the shape of calligrams. The outlines and letters of the text birds corresponded to the transcribed sound made by each bird, so making the birds sing their own visual-textual compositions.

    My Name Is Captain, Captain is a collaborative poem written in a language of word and image. The central metaphor is dead reckoning navigation, and the work as a whole has a peculiar relationship to the golden age of flight.

  3. Tailspin

    An old man’s tinnitus and partial deafness is a source of friction between him, his daughter and grandchildren yet he stubbornly refuses to contemplate treatment or hearing aids. Karen, the daughter, has always been hurt and mystified by his angry reactions, but the key to his behavior lies deep in the past. Tailspin is a multi-layered, animated fiction, created in Flash, about the intergenerational friction between an old man suffering from tinnitus and his daughter, whose children play noisy handheld games consoles. Sound mixes and animations, some programmed to play randomly, reflect the auditory and emotional disturbances of the characters around the family meal table. Broken dreams, spoilt playtimes, dysfunctional behaviour, malfunctioning machines and the sounds of alarm are both puzzling and distressing as the past splinters the present.

  4. Amor-mundo, ou a vida, esse sonho triste

    Amor-mundo, ou a vida, esse sonho triste [World-love, or life, that sad dream] is an animated text which proposes generative schemes of both visual and audio animation. Building on metaphors and images from the works of the Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca, and using as its starting point the Actionscript code of Jared Tarbel, this work includes five poems: Part 1 - Deixa-me ser a tua mais triste mágoa; Part 2 - Eu queria ser o mar alto; Part 3 - Passo no mundo a ler o misterioso livro;  Part 4 - Sou o vento que geme e quer entrar; Part 5 - Horas mortas. The reader can add to these poems random spatial layers that allow the creation of multiple constellations of meaning.

  6. Palimpsest

    “Palimpsest” is an audiovisual work exploring the space between sound and image through collaboration. Two distinct narratives, audio and visual, collide to find alternative paths and perspectives around a virtual light sculpture. The piece reinterprets one of a series of photographic light paintings taken during a drive at night [see image 1]. The photographs were experiments: improvisations with long exposures, motion and gesture. As images in themselves however, the collaborators found them to be engaging both visually and conceptually. Visually they bring to mind the poetic: the camera has captured ethereal light trails drawn by the motions of passing traffic in mid-air, giving them an almost sculptural quality. They suggest contours, energies, volumes and spaces that are open to further exploration and interpretation. Conceptually, their contradictory nature seems to suggest ideas of the interstitial - the space or place in-between things - or what Duchamp termed the “infrathin”. The light-forms captured in the image, exist in-between the real and the virtual, brought together in a moment by the camera.

  7. Blinding Lights

    This multimedia poem is about how saturated we have become with media coverage and how damaging that is. De Barros’ approach in this work is to also saturate us with sound, images, formatting, and color to make us realize the excessive amount of information we are constantly receiving. Each of the four parts of the poem uses multiple layers of color, still and moving images and text, looping and single-playing sounds, and responsive elements. Moving the pointer over the image of a man in the first part of the poem, for example, triggers a sequence of images that show how overloaded he is with visual information, to the extent that he needs to blindfold himself or avert his eyes. The narrative in the second part, and the images and words in the third and fourth parts all portray pain, damage, scarring, even murder, to demonstrate how damaged we have all become.   8. CHAOSity

    One challenge of General Education is that of finding ways to develop student interest in, and enthusiasm for, reading written texts or critically viewing visual texts. CHAOSity was created to address that issue. CHAOSity is a collaborative, original cultural work that involves individual readers as co-creators. CHAOSity questions the "linear, rigidly logical development of plot" and the "facile interpretation of life's complexities" that strict adherence to linearity, what author Carole Maso calls "the tyranny of narrative," can imply. The resulting multi-threaded story, told in text, animation, images and sound, permits both linear and nonlinear reading. CHAOSity includes 49 prose/poems Flash movies, 49 event sounds and legend.

  9. Etheric Ocean

    Ether is a hypothetical medium – supposed by the ancients to fill the heavens, proposed by scientist to account for the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through space. The notion of ‘ocean’ was once as vague. Aristotle perceived of the world as a small place, bounded by a narrow river. Columbus believed the Atlantic was a much shorter distance across than we now know it to be. Even as early electromagnetic telegraphic and wireless transmissions propagating over, under, and through oceans collapsed distances between ships and shores, they revealed vast new oceans – oceans of static, oceans of noise. Etheric Ocean is an underwater web art audio writing noise site. It is an imprecise survey of sounds both animal and mechanical, and of signs both real and imaginary, of distortions born of the difficulty of communicating through the medium of deep dense dark ocean. Like stations dotting a radio dial, murky diagrams, shifting definitions, appropriated texts, nautical associations, and wonky word plays are strung along a very long, horizontally scrolling browser window. This is a world of inversions. Sounds are deep harbours, or are they depths?
