  1. Postmodern: An Anagrammatic Slideshow Fiction

Richard Holeton’s gleefully, not to say Gaudi-ly, illustrated glidepath through the remnants of language that trail beyond the (littoral, literal) “postmodern” like the tail of a forlorn freeform comix comet, manage—as the Oulipo poet Michelle Grangaud might have said in her own Formes de l’anagramme à faire plusieurs fois des Temps rondo, in an eschatological imagetext mashup of demon storm troops, pert rodents, and skidrow resident poets, porn purveyors, and sperm donors via Flickr borrowings, Wiki burrowings, and whole tons of homebrew images bluesily rendered ala twerk.

  3. Inner Telescope: The First Poem in Outer Space (a Conversation)

Kac's work, entitled Inner Telescope, was specifically conceived for zero gravity and was not brought from Earth: it was made in space by Thomas Pesquet (French astronaut) following the artist's instructions.

The artwork was made from materials already available in the space station. It consists of a form that has neither top nor bottom, neither front nor back. Viewed from a certain angle, it reveals the French word “MOI“ [meaning “me”, or "myself"]; from another point of view one sees a human figure with its umbilical cord cut. This “MOI“ stands for the collective self, evoking humanity, and the umbilical cord cut represents our liberation from gravitational limits.

Inner Telescope is an instrument of observation and poetic reflection, which leads us to rethink our relationship with the world and our position in the Universe.

  4. A framework for developing multi-modal media-spaces using AI techniques

The act of integrating physical, virtual and textual conceptual spaces to create a unified new media artifact can be challenging. In our work we embrace a constant state of reconceptualization, as we transition between physical aspects of a performance and AI based manipulations that are both visual (art abstraction) and semantic. In these experiments the AI system works with meaning in terms of semantic keywords about the emotions and descriptions of a work. To fully explore the capabilities of these new immersive, virtual and semantic technologies, we can no longer rely on traditional creation, editing and production techniques, but must develop new practices and styles. We propose a new framework for creating what we refer to as ‘multimodal media-spaces.’ These media-spaces include interactive and video-based work that seek to combine physical, virtual and textual entities. This paper details our framework and its uses in several juried multimedia pieces. In our work we use 360 VR and multi-camera filming, movement performance from amateur and professionals, distortions of space and time using AI cinematic projections.

  7. Pacific Surfliner: San Juan Capistrano

Pacific Surfliner is one in a series of videos that map the route of the Pacific Surfliner along the California coast – San Diego to San Luis Obispo.  In so doing, they trace a kind of life story of a certain generation in time – arrivals and departures over the years, joy and loss. While San Juan Capistrano is a kind of central piece, touching on many life transformations, each piece takes a central emotion from its location.  The individual videos are layered with images, sound, and text –experimenting with storytelling modes.

    Author's statement:

Spoken screens:  the gap between presence and performance.  One of the challenging issues with e-literature has been the relationship between reading a work and watching it performed.  Some time-based or video work discourages the performative reading aspect altogether.  Pacific Surfliner suggests a new approach – a text-rich, time-based piece that can be performed (or read silently).

  10. Synthetic Empathic Intelligent Companion Artefacts (SEICA) Human Interaction Labs

Synthetic Empathic Intelligent Companion Artefacts (SEICA) Human Interaction Labs' (seicalabs.org) is a speculative transmedia narrative and a 12 personae multimedia performance art project. The work attempts to thematically bridge concepts and creative processes employed within the fields of art, science and technology through hypertext fiction and on/offline storytelling. Positioned as a faux virtual organization, SEICA Human Interaction Labs is manifested through its online activities. Operated by a team of personae, the organization produces multimedia research works that reflect on how overhyped media portrayals and oversimplification of information package the modern perception towards scientific discovery and technological innovation. Blending and bending technocultural themes through tropes found in popular culture and internet vernacular, the fictive organization’s cybernetic researchers strive to orchestrate chaos and generate questions that critically engage with near-real-time discourses on human interaction in the age of companion robots.
