  1. Samplers: Nine Vicious Little Hypertexts

    Deena Larsen's Samplers: Nine Vicious Little Hypertexts was originally published on 3.5-inch floppy disk for Macintosh and PC computers in 1997; it was released later that year on CD-ROM for both platforms. Larsen reports that she produced the work on her Macintosh computer and had not seen the PC version until years later ("Interview"). The work was created with Storyspace 1.2C and requires 5.5 MB of space. It is the second major work by Larsen and follows two years after the success of her opus, Marble Springs(1993). Contained among the nine little hypertexts is Century Cross, a work that was published as a solo work two years after Samplers Version 1.0 was released.

    This description comes from Rebooting Electronic Literature Volume 2:

    Stephanie Strickland's True North came out in 1997 in two formats. First, it was published as a print book of poetry by the University of Notre Dame Press and won––that same year––the Poetry Society of America's Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award and the Ernest Sandeen Poetry Prize. It also appeared as a hypertext poem released on floppy disk for both PC and Macintosh computers by Eastgate Systems, Inc. As Strickland states in her “Prologue,” work on True North began in 1995 at N. Katherine Hayles's National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar but originally was conceived over a decade earlier when, influenced by the writings of Simone Weil, she developed an interest in finding a woman’s language.

  3. Zeit für die Bombe

    "Zeit für die Bombe" ist eine multilineare Erzählung, die ich 1997 fürs World Wide Web schrieb. Schon damals träumte ich davon, sie einmal in einem digitalen Buch zu lesen. Als die Erzählung beim Internet-Literaturpreis "Pegasus" der Wochenzeitschrift "DIE ZEIT" den 1. Preis gewann, rieten mir viele Leute dazu, die Quatschidee mit dem digitalen Buch schnell wieder aufzugeben und stattdessen ein vernünftiges, also gedrucktes Buch zu schreiben. Grund: Der Hypertext sei tot, und das schon länger. Ob ich denn das noch nicht bemerkt hätte? Womöglich aus purer Sturheit schrieb und programmierte ich trotzdem weiter Hypertexte ( "Hilfe!" und "Die Schwimmmeisterin"), bis das Nachrichtenmagazin "Der Spiegel" mir 2002 den zweifelhaften Ehrentitel "Veteranin der schwindsüchtigen Szene" verlieh. Immerhin erkannte ich, dass das Magazin damit so falsch nicht lag. Denn multilineare Erzählungen im Internet zu veröffentlichen, hatte unübersehbare Nachteile. Der größte davon war, dass die Leser diese gar nicht lasen, sondern vor allem darin herumklickten, und zwar so schnell, dass sie gar nichts lesen konnten.

    Fotomo Blues is a work of hyperpoetry and images. It's been available online since 1997 [at www.ellipsis.net/fotomo/].

    It was made for fun in the pioneering days of the web - in 1997- in order to explore new narrative possibilities offered by online publication and a screen-based environment.

    Fotomo Blues offers a satire on urban grunge and media-obsession. It's an interactive visual-verbal rap on a world of electrified air, digital melancholia, meet-them-in-the-flesh nostalgia, sound bites fights, soap star charisma, geek-speak freaks, feelgood factors contractors, hairsplitting graffiti, tabloid tyranny, toxic tranquillity, revved-up redundancy, sex, lies and a whole lot more.

    When it first appeared it was described as "a timely zeit through the urban geist."
