  1. The murmur of i n t e r s t i c e s

    This is a collaboration across centuries between the 13th century Persian mystic and poet known as Rumi, whose silky lines of poetry appear beneath Zahra Safavian’s 3 by 3 grid of tiles with short looping videos and words— an interface for meditation on this poem’s idea. Rumi is credited with inventing the meditative poetic practice of “the turn” by dancing to the rhythm of the hammering of the goldsmiths. Rumi’s poems are usually organized into couplets, not necessarily rhyming, clustered into variable stanzas, and tend to establish a conversation between self and other, self and the world. Each tile can be clicked to reveal another word and video, representing perhaps some of the dualities expressed in the concept of the “turn,” though we are not dealing with binary opposites— the associations are more diverse than that. The three lines that appear after interacting with the short videos on the grid reinforce that idea, separating awareness of the head and the feet, each turning on its own, uncaring what the other does, as with a baby nursing.

  2. Orbital

    This poem is the result of two creative collaborations: Max Dunlop’s poem “orbital: a postcard to space travel” and Neil Jenkins’ generative engine that creates an entirely different experience of the work. A conceptual link is that of human communication across space. The idea of a postcard is very tied to travel, since they can be sent through a postal service anywhere on the planet to a physical address. This paper-based model of human communication doesn’t work well when people leave the planet, requiring technologies that work with electronic signals. During a time of digital networks, packets are still being sent from one address to another, but they are digital sequences sent to numerical IP addresses, translated into more natural language by DNS servers.   3. Bus

    “Bus” creates a soundscape of the interior of a bus in an urban location, and then uses a black screen for over a minute at the beginning of the piece to focus our attention on the aural information. When the narrative prose starts to flow on the screen, the narrator can focus on describing what he sees and we become immersed in his observations without needing further elaboration on the setting we’re in.   5. Ethereal Landscapes

    Ethereal Landscapes is an interactive computer artwork that employs language in the form of barcodes as the interface between a physical object and a virtual space. The user is immersed in a generative video and audio database synchronized in real-time through scanning the barcodes on each page of the photographic artists’ book. This collaborative piece challenges traditional notions of the book-object (as static and non-aural), and of video/audio (as passive and linear) by integrating the interactivity of turning a book’s pages with projected moving images and sound.

    Mirroring the interconnectedness of the formal level, Ethereal Landscapes investigates the relations between life as seen on a biological level and our quotidian human experience. The images from the book are referenced throughout the video; their combination with found and created sounds entwine together in a poetic arc around the processes of life, the passage of time and our un-deniable mortality.

  6. Family of silence

    "Family of silence" is the portrait of a Cambodian family, a couple and their daughter, exiled in France before the Civil War and the takeover of the Khmer Rouge the country in 1975. This film is a portrait of the daily life of this family of memory which emerges the deaf the buried memory of the war, exile, the painful feeling of being surviving when other members of the family disappeared.

  7. Bembo's Zoo

    Based on Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich’s delightful book of typographical animals, this website enhances the experience by providing beautifully produced animations (by Mucca design) that transition from the word for the animal to the animal figure built out of those letters. The sounds by Federico Chieli help breathe life into the animals, bringing us into their world and throwing in the occasional Tarzan cry to evoke a famous animal-related character. The typography is based on the Bembo font (named after the 16th century humanist poet Pietro Bembo), which provides a statuesque curvature and serifs to the letters that retain a manuscript feel to them.   8. the WORD project

    This collection of short animated concrete poems— or “word art” as Christopher prefers to call it— is reminiscent of Ana María Uribe’s Anipoemas and Neil Hennessy’s “Paddle” and “Puddle” poems because they are minimalist explorations of words and their components. The wit and inventiveness exhibited by these poems allow for moments of insight and reflection on the ideas presented. For example, the simplest of kinetic operations create a powerful comment on the supposed binary opposition between the words in “east & west” and “poles apart.” The trio of poems on bipolar disorder uses visual transformations of words to critique popular misconceptions, the use of medication to treat it, and praise The Icarus Project.

    The e-poem, video, and painting in this study were inspired by William Carlos Williams’ celebrated poem “The Great Figure.” It is fascinating to see how each artist (including Williams) used the materials of his/her medium to capture a vivid moment of human experience.

  10. I Cried Of Course

    This multimedia version of William Minor’s poem takes the musical version and adds a layer of photographic documentation that brings out the personal and particular in the poem. The sad tone of the poem’s text is underscored by the piano and vocal performances, and the images help us visualize the details of what is behind this emotional energy. Here we see a man and a woman in black and white photographs, young, together, and happy to be there. Other images of the woman alone gazing out of the photograph’s frame, in one case wearing a wedding dress, suggest that the memory of the deceased young man is still alive within her. Images of manuscript versions of the poem, including drafts and handwritten musical scores show the work in progress, evolving from one version to the next. All of these objects— manuscripts, scores, photographs, audio recordings, and e-poem— seek to capture that which can only be experienced or imagined.
